I actually like the fact that Scott Pilgrim was going for Ramona, because life isn’t interesting until you find something worth chasing. And I can relate to this story.
Gotta admit, I disagree with you about the final volume. Them realizing their fault and still putting up the good fight I found amazing. Being with Ramona isn't "us vs the world". It's "we're fucked up, but im willing to see it to the end if you are."
Me and the wife have been together since 11 and 12 so this series hurt me in ways I've never had to experience but I still really relate to a lot of the characters when they make certain mistakes, only we were making those mistakes in our teens.

I kinda like how Scott and Ramona ended up together because the whole journey got them both to be better persons, to fight their demons and at the end, even Ramona was insecure about their future, which then Scott said "now we try again", showing up that both knew they weren't a good couple. Their relationship was full of mistakes of both parts, but Scott was confident that now they could restart a very fresh relationship without worries of past mistakes and past demons, really appreciating and learning with each other. I don't think Scott would have the same experience with any other character, not because it would be impossible, but because all of what happened, happened with Ramona, and for that I can kinda see why Scott made the decision of trying again with her, as I can understand why Ramona, even with insecureness, gave them both a second chance. It's worth saying that we don't know if they stayed together until the end, what we do know is that they tried again, which for me is beautiful to see this effort coming from they two. They may have split up after some time, but now having learned to do things the right way.
Great review! I agree with many points you've brought up. The book does hit different when you are in your twenties. Also cool thing, that doesn't get brought up as much, is the theme of repressed memories. At first, Scott being forgetful seems like him being quirky and foolish, and in later books Kim reveals that his memories of him saving her are far from truth. He thought he was hero and stuff, but in reality he was kind of a jerk. I think glow represents repressed memories coming trough. Also i think that Ramona's bag is also a metaphor for emotional baggage, she always carries with herself. Because she is reluctant to show it's contents to Scott, and her memory of Gideon is in that bag. When the bag explodes in chaos theater it represents her opening herself up in front of everyone

Great point about flashback pages with a black gutter being harder to parse when the comic is in color. The color naturally takes up more real-estate in our head, and the black gutter is a bit of an afterthought, as opposed to grayscale only, where it is probably the very first thing the reader will notice. With no set-up for the flashback, the color scheme really needed to be switched up to land properly. Something I'll have to consider myself!

I honestly didn't mind the ending because while yeah a majority of the story was a boss fight, gotta remember that most Mangas have volumes that are mainly boss fights.
You should watch the Netflix show about Scott Pilgrim. It was marketed as a 1:1 adaptation of the comic book but it was a bait-and-switch. It's a sequel to the comic books and the protagonist is Ramona. She show tackles really well how toxic and unstable their relationship is and all the characters get amazing development that they didn't have in the comic books (except Emvy and Lisa sadly, the latter not even showing up in there)
Great review Dogg! I read the first 2 books a long time ago which I enjoyed quite a lot but never got very motivated to pick up the 3rd, and so I lost interest. However, I think a large part of that was that the format was small and I didn't actually like the lack of colour, it was just something I tolerated during the first 2 books. I would love to give this series a second chance with the colour versions some day. I actually really like the cleaner look that you get with it. I loved the film so I'm kind of aware of most of the main themes and elements from that, but it does sound like there's a lot more to explore in the books. I think I'm gonna have to give it another try at some point. As for your review, I actually think it was a noticeable improvement in terms of just how well you articulated your thoughts in this one, and at the end when you mention you'd given it a go without so heavily scripting, it all made sense! Keep up the great work bro! WOOF WOOF!

I must have been about 23 at the time, so clearly there wasn't a lot for me to connect with 🙄😅 For you, Richard, I will give them another go! I think I will have to go the coloured version route though. I definitely think in a story like this, it's pretty essential in my mind and would have been one of the reasons it just didn't click with me in black & white.

I think since you've only just done this review it's maybe too soon to think about doing another video on it now, but maybe test the format with something else first? The first thing that springs to mind that might be a good fit is Walking Dead?
Also i believe colored version to be superior, as it's much clearer, you can easily differentiate every character by their hair color and skin tone. I mean when i read it in BW long ago, i thought that Ramona was the drummer in Shatterband. On the other note, whole series feels so nostalgic already, with all the late 2000's tech and fashion. And the fact that it's universally loved by everyone, has great movie adaptation, has awesome game based on it, cast of the meeting again for script reading and NOW anime adaptation coming warms my heart so much. This is such a great timeless story ❤ Cool people aren't cool
You my friend obviously haven’t read enough manga. In manga a flash back is always black unless it’s a flash back in a flash back where then it is grey

I've been looking back at these books for the past few days, and I have to say there were a lot of missed opportunities for the last book. My personal would be a story about Scott and Wallace realizing they have been repressing feelings for each other and Scott still defeating the last guy because holy shit that dude is like super duper evil.
