I read this history in a book while staying with my in-laws (one of the few in their library in English) in Lisbon in 1963. It was a translation from the German Commander's memoirs.
His instructions were to create a diversionary force in East Africa to drain "enemy" forces away from the European theatre.
His force, which included a number of Native members (and their families, as was the way then) was not very numerous, but highly mobile.
Since this was his memoirs, he obviously survived - for the whole duration of WW1.
Despite histories written by the victors, General Paul von Lettow Vorbeck was the hero in this little tale.
If you can find a copy, I would highly recommend this autobiography as a "Ripping Yarn".

I’ve just watched the African Queen today and although based on a book which was loosely based on the battle reports I still don’t think it does the true story any justice, the film for it’s time was great though.
We’ve got the technology now to recreate the battles so I think it’s time for a remake of that film.

I say the 1812 naval battles on the great lakes as weirder. It was an lake gunboat fight who escalated up to ship of the line level at the end.
And as you covered the US having two carriers on the great lake during WW 2 and they also build plenty of destroyers in Chicago during that war.

Technically youre both right. Whilst neither Ghana nor Mozambique were conrtrolled by grrmany both had parts of there modern day counterparts under the control of the Kaiser. For Mozambique that would be the Kionga Triangle which was owned by the Germans between 1894 and 1916. The book to find any info on this would be Thomas, H.B; The Kionga Triangle. For Ghana the region now known as British Togoland was a part of the larger german colony of Togoland. While this one has no easy to refrence book there is still much evidence you can find for yourself

He spoke German and French, making him perfect for the mission.
Because who's going to need to talk kiswahili in East Africa?

Right? Its just unrealistic for the natives to learn either of those languages just because they would need it to communicate with the government! 😡

It was a skirt not a kilt. He told the other officers his wife made them for him, and he found them to be much cooler than trousers. Trying to justify to an army officer why he had not attacked the unarmed fort mentioned in the video was perhaps undermined because he was doing so while wearing said skirt.
The locals were so impressed by the old times sailor tattoos covering Spicer Simpson’s arm and torso that he had a daily bathing routine in which he would take his shirt off and flex for the gathered crowd before hopping in the tub. There were rumors he had begun to be regarded as a powerful sorcerer or perhaps even a minor god because of these tattoos and performances
He also took to smoking monogrammed cigarettes when he found out that the navy would provide him with them if ordered.
Seriously, find a book about this or watch the video The Great War did on it if you can. This story is even more bizarre than this video makes it seem.

Geoff was a relative of mine. While certainly eccentric some of his unusual habits had reasons behind them. Most of the books on the subject share information from 1 source. The Doctor from the expedition. Unfortunately from the old letters i have read he seemed to have a rather bitter outlook on the mission. A film would be most entertaining indeed.
