    You have to THINK when doing comparison videos. Rehersal is often good practice. You were continually turning your fabric presenting a different weave to the different scissors. Gingher scissors are hot and cold. You get what you get. KAI scissors, even the less expensive ones, are very consistent. I know, I sell and sharpen them. The particular ones you were using are at the forefront of scissor technology with multiple blade angles and other advances. That being said, any old scissor sharpener won't do. You would have to cut miles with a pair of 7000 series KAI scissors to even think about sharpening. If I had to choose, Ernest Wright scissors would be my choice because I'm old school, but I'd also have KAIs.
    Good video, but keep apples and oranges separated.

    I have both. My dressmaker shears are ginger. Over had them twenty years and love them. I also have two Kai's they are also great. They are my backups to the gingers when they need sharping. My gingers sound nothing like yours do. I understand about the machinic in you and ears in tune to metallic sounds. I hear it in my machines, cars, scissors, even pins and needles. I think you got a bad pair or they have changed the way they make them. Enjoy your Kai's as much as any good sewer should enjoy good tools.

      Margie Cook I read that Fiskars has taken over Gingher so I’m wondering if that has anything to do with it? Always possible I suppose. The Kais are definitely lighter and easier on my hands. I hear those “off” sounds everywhere lol. I think I drive the husband a little crazy 😂. Thanks for watching Margie 😁

    Kais are a well accepted standard, but my favorites are a variety of Japanese scissors (Shozaburo, Misuzu) which are forged and hand-made/ground. They come in a variety of steels. I prefer semi-stainless SLD (tool steel) over the Hitachi White #1 which is most common and tends to rust over time (like your Grandma's shears). In the USA they can be difficult to find, but myShozaburo Hard Cutting (SLD steel, 240mm) is a decade old and still cuts like new. You can tell that the mating surface on that Gingher is flat instead of convex ground. It's a cheaply made pair. This will lead to a sense of rubbing.

      Considering the cheapest one available in the US is 80 dollars, must be good! But in this same price level you can buy another great brands! So, again you get what you pay for!

      The complex convex grinds can't be done by robot because the grinding wheel does not stay constant as it wears down. Only skilled hands can do this. And the Japanese craftsmen are meticulous and take pride in their product. @@aldobega2649

    Thank you for your thorough video in both words and pictures. I think you covered every aspect! I use all kinds of cheaper scissors including Fiskars carbon-coated (packaged for general use, not particularly sewing scissors). They cut fabric really well, and sound just like your Kai. I haven't used them very much - probably 6 months worth of a busier sewist, but they are still in excellent shape and condition and cut as nicely as day one. (I've had them for several years, but haven't been sewing much. I have watched many videos where people are cutting out or trimming and the scissors they are using look and sound professional. They are usually shiny in appearance not dull like the Kai. I have no idea of the brands. I have recently started sewing again and thought I would treat myself to a pair of "good" scissors. After your video I am rethinking my choices and preconceptions. May I ask how you are feeling now after a couple of years of use?

  • @Dahna_

    well I can't say that I have had lint buildup on my Ginghers but I would like to see if there is a difference between them and the kai. I wonder does Kai do designer versions like Gingher does?

    I''m trying to come to a concklusion, which scissors to get, for my mother. She's almost blind (86%) but she does wonders with scissors, creating bags,clothes and a ton of other stuff. I just want the best, to make her happy! Any suuggestions, would be really apreciated!
    PS The Gighers with the Golden handle just need sharpening.Then, they will perform as good as KAI, if not better!

    Thank you for the information and details! I'm a beginner looking for scissors and this was really helpful. I think your delivery and editing could improve. For example less pauses and throat clearing. Close ups and text saying the title of each fabric would make your video a little more professional and concise. Overall, great! Thanks again.

    I actually work in a factory and just picked these up on Amazon.
    I will cut things like plastic wrapping, small rubber pieces, thinner cardboard etc
    The 5210 being about $15 I figured "Why Not?".
    Atm I could just have the company order me a pair at their cost but they order the Fiskar orange handle scissors for ($10).
    Those become dull so fast and several have broken on me.....Almost all my tool (Ratchets, screwdrivers etc) are all bought on my dollar (By my own choice).
    I always just figure if I ever change jobs etc all those tools are going with me anyway, so it is a good excuse to build up a decent set that I can take home freely when needed etc.
    Always been telling myself I need a good pair of scissors, if the 5210 work out then I will likely try the 7000 series down the line.
    Rant over haha, thanks for the vid.

    Hey Viv. I have a pair of all silver Ginghers I got from JoAnns. While they are very sharp, I don't use them much as they are heavy. Mine sound the same as yours and the blades seem to rub against each other too. I am liking the look of the Kai pair you have as I think that they would help the fabric lay flatter as it is cut. Going to consider trying them out soon.

    Hi Viv. I have two pair of Kai scissors and I love them. The first pair I got maybe 5 years ago at a pattern drafting class at Hancock fabrics. They were pricey - equivalent to my Gingher scissors I previously owned - but I thought a second “good” pair would be nice. They out performed my Gingher’s by a mile and I have used just the Kai ever since. My second pair are a little smaller (maybe 8”?) but I like them for certain projects. Btw - I’ve never sharpened my first pair and they cut through fabric like it’s butter...

      Teresa Randall That is great news! I love that they’ve stayed sharp all this time. That means good craftsmanship for sure. I’d love to get another couple of pair for myself in the future for more specific tasks. Thanks for sharing that information Teresa, I appreciate it!

  • @ElizabethMadeThisSEW
    @ElizabethMadeThisSEW 5 лет назад +2

    It's like kitchen knives--the right pair of scissors for you is the one that you keep razor sharp and the ones that feel good in your hands. I started off with my Mom's Fiskars, and there was definitely some chewed up edges, LOL! I need to take mine in for a sharpening, but I've really loved my Kai's, especially the serrated edge ones. I also have #7230s. They're so sharp AND lightweight which is good for my small hands. I actually took Ginghers back to JoAnn one day because they hurt my hands (lady thought I was nuts).😂

    • @StitchesSeams
      @StitchesSeams  5 лет назад

      Elizabeth Made This I wish I had done that! Those ginghers have been no fun and then all the guilty feelings when I wasn’t using them ugh 😩. I totally agree, you find the tool that fits right in your hand and there’ll be no looking back!

  • @myralorraine

    Great video Ms. Viv! I never heard of the Kai scissors! And they look like something I would purchase too! Thanks for the review! I’ve used a “spring loaded” Fiskars for years, the same pair (don’t know how long I’ve had them!). I like them because they’re lightweight, stay super sharp and have a nice cushioned handled that keeps my fingers from hurting during some of those “marathon” cutting events! (Especially before the rotary cutter!). This is a good comparison and I would consider Kai if I needed a new pair. Thanks again!

    When I started to sew I was given a pair of ginghers - they are so sticky I used my fiskers preferentially. 🤦‍♀️ I’ve been given Kais and they work so much better, though I still don’t have success taking a long bite of the fabric. Shorter ones work better. Maybe it’s all because I’m a lefty - the kais feel better overall, the ginghers would bruise my hand with a lot of cutting. I’ve heard the kais are more “true lefty” - though I have no clue what that really means.

    • @StitchesSeams
      @StitchesSeams  5 лет назад

      Christina Fisher Huh, I hadn’t heard that. But if they work better for you that’s what matters. I know lefty’s tend to have issues and using scissors isn’t something enjoyable. Thanks for watching Christina!

  • @ArtVanAuggie
    @ArtVanAuggie 4 года назад

    With the Kai 7200 series, you MUST use a competent sharpener. This series uses different angles for each blade, which are much more acute and sharper than the old 10-15 degree scissors. New high dollar scissors are very technical. The scissor companies are incorporating technologies they have been using in hairstyling scissors and really coming out with amazing products. Kai is a really good Japanese manufacturer and their scissors (even the inexpensive ones) are excellent. It just takes a sharpener that isn't up to date to really mess that up.

    I have five pairs of Ginghers, and I think there is something wrong with yours. I have heard great things about the Kais, I do have one pair that is 19 years old, and they have been fantastic. If I ever have to buy another pair of scissors, I'll definitely try the Kais you have, they look really fantastic. I also think they have a more hand friendly look about them, like they are a newer, more ergonomic design.
