"You're going to be alright. You just stumbled over a stone in the road. It means nothing. Your goal lies far beyond this, doesn't it? I'm sure you'll overcome this. You'll walk again...soon." - Guts
Don’t worry, his students will finish his work. Imagine what would happen if Kentaro’s students got to make an R-Rated Godzilla horror movie. Would you watch it?
life is a struggle people come and go it is only natural no need to feel sad I'm happy he made berserk with his time here I have a tattoo for berserk but I will not punish myself with sadness over his death I will keep his work close to my heart and celebrate his life and work happily take the Irish approach to death my friend it will help ease the loss
One may leave this earth but he'll never truly die. Even those we don't know live within us. A glimpse of a stranger will live in our dreams. As we struggle we can inspire 🤟 I know he's helped me push past what I thought was possible
The reason why Guts is so well written is because he goes through anger, fear, joy just like us. Other protagonists give off this plastic feeling of being the face of flawlessly righteous hero
I remember being so shocked the first time I saw Guts genuinely scared of something like when he first fought Zodd or the Snake Apostle when he got the jump on Guts. You don't see main characters actually feel fear on that kind of level.
Yes because he has flaws, he has sinned, he has emotions, he isn't perfect. That's because Guts has a character, instead of bland blank paper that's a self insert
ha you know some time ago, in a comment section like this one, a guy wrote: "show me a hollywood movie protagonist, and i will tell you everything about him. what his opinion is on all matters, political, religious, social, whether he cheats on his wife... doesnt matter. they are all the same." manga is the only place where characters are allowed flaws right now. a notable exception was game of thrones, which featured some really fucked up "good guys" and that was a huge part of why it was so popular.
@@ailouros24 There were no good guys in game of thrones. The show made sure to kill the only clear good guy while another was ineffective. It's just crappy people who others liked enough to cheer on. So why are crappy characters like in Willow Disney Plus or Star wars hated despite having flaws to make them real? Because they are the insufferable "real people" you'd rather have nothing to do in real life.
@@arnowisp6244 that is the point. They are real flawed people. And each one has fans who can relate to them on some level despite, or even because of the flaws. Have you seen the memes from feminists calling cersei a "queen bitch" and glorifying her? Baby killing cersei. That is good writing. Not the politically correct NPC's of other shows
Guts was not even supposed to be born.. However he still took birth and lived.. Guts has always escaped Death even though it was his destiny.. He has since fought everything. He is a hero no one can become.. The only thing accurate in Guts life may just be his Name.. Which defines his life.
It's childish, but I tend to get irritated when people call Kirito from SAO the real Black Swordsman. One thing I kept hearing from those people is that since Kirito was able to keep his friends safe unlike Guts, Kirito is therefore the better protagonist. That's like praising someone for clearing Kirby 64 while making fun of the other guy who is struggling through Dark Souls.
@@melancholysketch190 he's an anti hero struggler, how about that? By definition, he is an anti hero, a fact so I don't care what you say, facts don't care about feelings.
Saruwatari I mean doomgslayer just outright wins, except maybe against Kratos, since he has advanced guns. Fistfight though would be interesting if all of them had all their power ups. Kratos would likely win that unless guts used a behelitto
@@legendary3952 meruem and guts maybe even itachi are better we barely have an idea about chrollo he's not that fleshed compared to the others here all we know he came from a city he cares about his spiders also sends them to do their missions chrollo might not even his real name we need to know more about him
Anubis that’s why I find him interesting as he’s an enigma. A big question mark. I always enjoy the idea of fate vs free will, and he explored this theme perfectly. I know we haven’t seen or know a lot of from him but what he have is very intriguing. Besides guts is a great character. In my opinion the best protagonist in anime. Meruem, is great too but I he doesn’t work that well for me. But I still know he’s deep and has layers
@The D4C Gang I admit being an enigma makes a character interesting but not compelling by any sense of the word, I had an argument once someone thinks Johan liebert is a deep character which is false I agree he's well executed as a villain and admit he's terrifying at times but as a character overall he's totally dead last on complex same as joker and chrollo, I personally not interested in one dimensional characters with zero backstory or motivation and no real explanation of why they do things especially if they drag, it's true they're interesting at first but they get stale when the time goes, not saying they're bad characters they just fit in the narrative they're executed in but they're not practically deep or compelling characters.
A man is dead when he is forgotten. Berserk made a different man out of me, thank you Kentaro Miura for creating such a masterpiece. Its a shame that we will never see the end of the best Manga in the world. I pray for him and his relatives. Rest easy legend...... We will never forget you.
I think one of his apprentices said they'd finish it for him, I'm not certain if this is true but I sure as hell hope so, not for my sake but for Miura's as I believe any writer deserves to have their story finished, even if they're not around to see it to the end, just like the story of Artorias and the Chosen Undead, while one failed to see their quest to the end, another is willing to see it to the end.
technically he always stated the manga will end when he breaths his last breath, so i mean i think the non finished state is an unintended intended end. im unbearably sad its come to an end but maybe it was meant to be like this
My favorite part of Guts will always be his vulnerability. Everyone calls him a chad and a badass and all the shit, and he is, but that's not what makes him so good. It's just how sad he is. Seriously, Guts is only angry because, if he let depression take over instead, he would drop dead in minutes. Guts is the only anime character that I legitimately want to cry for. It's clear that his trust has been violated a dozen times over, he's been hurt mentally, physically, sexually and any other way you can think of in ways that would break anyone else, and what actually makes him work is: He's actually broken. He's only that alpha male power fantasy at surface level. Go underneath and he's a scared child, and his raw masculinity only leads him to more death and pain. He's stuck in a rut that he can't get out of, and he fights anyway, and that's admirable, painful, and the exact opposite of why he is usually liked.
The reason why guts was so well written is he is a true chaotic neutral character, he will do horrible things for those he loves for good reasons, he gets carried away with his own ideas and often does wrong things thinking he is right, but as the video says he is not all about rage and revenge he is an indomitable will and a spark of humanity in a demonic cesspit of a world.
And the best thing is, you can see with his current traveling group, he's finally healing. He smiles again, he has something to fight for, he's teaching others how to make themselves better people (as best he knows how). Seeing Guts start to somewhat overcome his intense trauma is one of the most heartwarming and worthwhile things I can imagine.
There's one scene during the Eclipse that exemplifies the notion of the extreme will of Guts. Femto telepathically stops Guts when he tries to attack him, and for a split second Guts through sheer determination actually breaks loose. Even one of the God Hand mentions how impossible it is.
I hope Miura has the whole story written down somewhere in case of his death so that someone can finish it for him. I hope it doesn't happen, but I also hope the ending is written down. I couldn't give less shit about art at this point. I would have a *mental breakdown* if it were just canceled one day.
i think in an interview that he did say that he has already written the ending in case something happens...he deserves so much more recognition. every single teenager thinks horikoshi(hero academia) is the god of the new generation manga,i want to bang my head on the wall. just see how perfectly artistic miura's panels are and how beautifully he draws every character's emotion and intensity. no one can compare
I think Godo summarized him flawlessly. He’s ravenously angry because “hatred is the place where men who can’t stand to face their own sadness drift to”. If it wasn’t for his ferocity and lust for revenge, he’d have gone insane (and that’s after having seen otherwordly beings and being faced with his destiny, let alone having his companions brutally murdered in front of his eyes by said creatures). The reason why Guts is so relatable is that his mental state’s constantly shifting, depending on how strong his apathetic and brutal façade is after certain events. His crusade against demons wasn’t out of sheer determination and bloodlust, it was his coping mechanism to prevent him from facing the truth, which almost cost him the only memento he has of his past and his sanity: Casca. Miura you beautiful bastard!
Guts is my role model. He's someone who takes responsibility for his actions, never stops moving forward and fights no matter how bad things are. He isn't irredeemable even though he has done bad things, and he learns from his mistakes.
Yeah, he’s a great role model. You hardly see characters like him anymore, who encompass the good side of humanity to a specific extent, like Sam Vimes from Discworld or FitzChivalry from the Farseer trilogy.
"I feel like Guts is a good person deep down" That reminds me of this quote from The Jackal in Far Cry 2: "You're not a good person Reuben, you've just been lucky enough, you've never had to be otherwise. When it comes down to it, what a man can do is what a man will do, but believe what you want."
Severely underrated game. And yes, I agree. He essentially means that a truly good man is a dangerous one, but he keeps his demons under voluntary control until there's no other option but to tap into their power. While most people don't even take the first step in aknowledging their malevolent, violent tendencies, it is the second step that is the hard part - accepting and controlling it. And I believe this is Guts' ultimate mission, to conquer the beast of darkness after learning how to accept it and integrate it properly into his existence as a warrior and protector.
@@HarlanDrake anger might give you power for some minutes but in those minutes it only left scares of regrets believe me i have paid lot because of it but still grief wont go away it is best to let go and live a normal life then trying to messed up yourself over small ego. Some people learn early and some people learn by the hard way .
He's no hero. Guts is the dark knight, who uses his rage, his resentment, his despair, turns it into a weapon and uses that to protect you. He does what he can and frequently bites back when people note that most people he meets end up dead, not because he doesn't care about them, but because he started to care too much. His agressive demeanour is the mask he uses to hide his wounded heart, and it can be seen as early as his confrotation with the Slug Baron where the Baron's daughter swears vengeance upon Guts. He takes it with a smile, because he knows that way she'll have a reason to live, but can't stop breaking down and crying because he legitimately feels sad at what she had to endure, at what he had to do to her father, at her hate towards him. Guts is simply too humane, in an inhuman, unreasonable world.
He's broken. I feels bad a lot. His past haunts him EVERY SINGLE DAY. It's branded into him. He tried the psychopath, sociopath lifestyle. At heart, that isn't him. He's a very intelligent and caring guy. He cries like a Man, he laughs and cracks jokes. He tried shedding his humanity so many times though he cannot. He also mentions his humaness fighting Apostles. How they sold their souls while he maintained it and like a light in the spiralling abyss that is Berserk he is forever tied to it.
So let me get this straight .... Anime Studios will put shit ton of money in making shitty romance/comedy animes and put absolutely nothing for perhaps the greatest manga of all time ?? Seriously where is the logic here ?
Guts is quite literally the doom slayer of his universe. Hatred and brutal rage towards creatures from a hellish dimension, he lost everyone he loved and cared about, superhuman strength and speed, and a unquenchable thirst for blood
It goes deeper than that though. He has to deal with his own rage at times threatening ro destroy what few chances of happiness he has left. His own strength turns against him and he finds himself struggling against himself just as hard at times.
@@scout360pyroz yep. People think Doom Guy is badass and all but no one ever sees Doom Guy as a tragic person. Rage consumes people and creates some of the worst tragedies in human history, most of Guts's wrong doings are also caused by his rage. If anything we all SHOULDN'T strive to be Guts, we should be more than him. His holding onto hatred is bad, but it's understandable ( because who can ever move on from that event? It's impossible. ), that's what makes him human.
It's a bit different, Doom Guy from lore perspective is nearly effortlessly slaughtering demons en masse and is basically a clone of an old god or something. Basically, his situation was a bad one, but he had the deck stacked in his favor. Guts has none of that, he wants to take revenge against the Godhand, who are basically all gods, and specifically wants to kill Griffith, the guy with a demon army that defeated the emperor. Also, nitpick, but Berserk actually predates Doom by 3 years.
@@Logank192 Disregard the awful bullshit lore of Eternal, please. Stick to 2016 and before, and you'll see just how incredibly similar Doomguy is to Guts. There is a huge, HUGE difference between them, however. Namely, that after the literaly apocalypse happend, Doomguy voluntarily stayed in Hell to keep the demons at bay, to save whatever was left of humanity, because he himself had nothing. Screw Eternal and Hugo's stupid writing.
@@beetheimmortal, the only thing that Eternal added was him being the clone of some old god, that's it. Even in Doom 2016, lore-wise, he was slaughtering demons left and right with hardly any effort. Doom's lore has never been great, so I don't know what Hugo did that was so bad. Also, even if he wanted to, Guts couldn't just stay in the Eclipse, that's not how it worked.
weeb lol ok how is it a fact guts fights nearly godly beings and still wins the hardest people kirito ever fought are nothing compared to what guts fights and you know it plus its guts who was named the black swordsman first thats facts
Beserk filler arc: Guts crosses over to the SAO universe to beat the living shit out of Kirito in front of everyone for the title of Black Swordsman. 10/10 would recommend.
Even though Guts is a fictional chacracter, everytime I'm feeling down, hopeless and giving up on something I always think of Guts and suddenly I'm filled with newfound grit and determination.
Guts is the perfect characterization of the human condition. A constant struggle against destiny, a cruel unforgiving world, his trauma, and his own inner rage that threatens to turn him into a monster. It’s all constant struggle, but he fights on and tries to do what is right. He constantly falls short and is hurt physically and mentally but still tries to do what is right and protect the people he cares about.
With Guts and everything that has happened to him I can't pity him. I feel sad for him I can feel angry or happy about him. But I could never pity him. Because after hearing about all the terrible things in his life and how he has grown to be the man he is now in spite of it all is the most inspiring thing about him. His tragedy isn't what defines him it's his struggle to overcome it and keep moving forward is.
I certainly wouldn't want to pity him. I think if he found out, he would tell me to shove that pity right up my ass. He might see pity as weakness, and we all know how much he fucking hates those who are weak.
I agree. I don't pity Guts anymore than i pity someone that made a recovery after being racked with stage-3 cancer. It seems so similar to that grim, bitter determination that comes from literally trying to hold your body together as you're going through a full system failure, over and over. It's like joining the league of individuals that are so badass and battle-ravaged, Death himself is too nervous to approach you at the wrong time to let you know your time has come.
“To those human beings who are of any concern to me I wish suffering, desolation, sickness, ill-treatment, indignities-I wish that they should not remain unfamiliar with profound self-contempt, the torture of self-mistrust, the wretchedness of the vanquished: I have no pity for them, because I wish them the only thing that can prove today whether one is worth anything or not-that one endures.” ― Friedrich Nietzsche, The Will to Power
My favorite pages from the manga will always be when young guts kills the wolves after having to run away from his mercenary group. It always hits close to home when he just lays there and thinks what's the point of continuing on. It'd be easy for him to lay there and die but he doesn't. He continues to fight to his very last breath, not for honor and not even for the hope of a better life, he just keeps on struggling.
My favorite page is probably the thumbnail that you used. Even through Gut's blood soaked and injured as hell, he still has a serene look to his face when he sees that his comrades are safe.
Berserk is the first story to actually change my life. And for that I will say Guts is the best character ever written. I cant really describe it...I just know I owe this story my life.
Truthfully, I have never had a manga impact me as much as Berserk, nor a character impact me as much as Guts. I've always been a determined person, but reading Guts has inspired me to be even more determined.
@Acroselorator I don't care about GOT books I would ask the godhands to give us berserk ending by reviving MIURA and wouldn't even hesitate to give GRRM as a brand sacrifice
Guts is a prime example of never give up, people keep saying you cant look up to him because he's a super human and fictional but dude, his enemies aren't humans either and a kitchen knife can still hurt him, the point is no matter how badly fucked he is, he always tries to get back up
Found this video in a suggestion bar, and glad I clicked. I appreciate the love and respect that went into this. As soon as forces started playing, I knew I had found something special.
RIP Miura-Sensei, fly to heaven on the wings of Angels and dance with all of your dead comrades from Berserk, we love you. Loudly crying face I discovered his work of Berserk a few years back and adore it. We can only uplift him to everyone who has yet to discover his work. Berserk is amazing.
Don’t worry, one of his students said that he will finish Miura’s work. Imagine what would happen if his students got to make an R-Rated Godzilla movie. Would you watch it?
@@rickyrackey7930 One of his students said that? Well I hope he does Miura-sensei's work justice, but even if he doesn't I believe Miura will be happy that it just gets completed at the very least, that's what any author wishes of their work.
Fun fact: Tolkien wrote a story (The Children of Húrin) which is markedly similar to the story of Berserk, from 'The Black Swordsman' (yes that's in there too), to the ideas of Dark Fantasy, even a similar memory loss as occurs to Casca. It's really very good. Go read it.
I have always thought that "the children of hurin" is "berserk before beserk", for me when I first read it, Turin turambar was an enormous parallel to Guts, I wouldn't be surprised if Miura got some inspiration from him when he first started berserk. And I always imagined that the end of the children of hurin could also be a clue to imagine how Berserk's end would be. Now that Miura is in greener pastures, I'm certain that he is at same corner of heaven with Tolkien, both are without equal. Keep struggling, Aurë entuluva
The story was never finished, but Tolkien's son rewriten it. And boy he did a mess. Characters were dumb, killing each other over some silly arguments. Turin enslaving dwarfs who tried to help him. Theres also an omage to the british royal families in a form of incest. 2/10 - waste of time, just like reading this comment
I remember when I first started reading Berserk I was rolling my eyes at how over the top edge Guts was. But then, during the Slug Lord Arc, the conclusion just hit me like a drug, specifically the last panel of Guts looking back crying. The sheer misery on his face sold it to me. The hurt he was holding in had broken through at that moment, and the manga had me hooked as I spent the next 3 days binging.
Upon a few rereads I also forgot that Guts does show a decent amount of inner turmoil when it came to letting Vargas get executed. The way he questions himself, expresses frustration, and even finds Vargas' severed head to look him in the eye and respect the expression on Vargas' face all point to there being something underneath all the "edge." Really hate that term btw lol I never thought to think of Guts (or Wyald)vas "edgy" until everyone on the internet told me to. Embracing evil and being an edgy troll are very different to me
@@mrmanju6989 Yea I hate how anything vaguely dark is considered "edgy". I just saw Guts' demeanor as a natural byproduct of his life experiences. And Wyald was just to show how extreme some of the apostles can be.
Same for me. Both first volumes got me confused as in… why inflicting so much pain upon one character ? I felt empathy for Guts, first second in. I had a feeling that this man was broken thus why he speaks so harshly. And when he turned his back from Theresia right after killing her father, I sobbed. Then to later discover he was sold by his only family member, bro my heart clenched.
I think the relationship between Guts and Puck is actually really telling. He starts off not wanting him around, then he keeps him around because he can heal him and slowly over a very long time he grows to not only trust him but open up to the possibility of trusting people again. Its thanks to Puck that Guts has a squad around him now
I never noticed how, after guts loses his arm, while fighting with skull knight's sword he still brings up his stump arm as if he still had it. Nice touch
I watched the 2016 berserk remake as my first intro to the series. Aside from most of the animation being awful, the story and message drew me in and kept me thinking. I finally decided to read the manga, which I almost never do, and I can't stop. It's so good. I can't believe such a gem was right under my nose this whole time.
I love Berserk from the bottom of my heart. And i have to say im actually very thankful that there is people like you who spend time on paying tribute to the amazing cultural masterpiece that is Berserk with this kind of very well made videos, thank you!
Guts, Musashi from Vagabond, and Thorfinn from Vinland Saga, to me belong in the same SS tier character in term of the writing. All of them are crazy strong but are fragile. As the story goes, they started to show their fragility more and more.
@@mrmanju6989 Go for Vinland Saga just because it's still ongoing and the author is still releasing new chapter every once in a while, lol Vagabond is great. But it's been in hiatus since god's know how long.

Guts is a amazing character. Many characters are loved by the fanbase because more often than not the fans are able to understand and transport themselves in that character's place for wishfulfilment. But that is not case with Guts since nobody would wish to be in his place or live his life yet people still support him on his journey and want him to acomplish his goal even if he is so different from the reader. He's THAT good of a character.
Phan Boy i would want to share guts pain because it's so big but i would support his goals because he is right to want pay back against the supernatural beings
Guts looks like an evil dark knight and starts off as a mercenary. He may come across as rude and violent, but he’s had a hard life and faced horrors no human should go through. Yet, he becomes close to people who become his friends and family that make him feel special and accepted. Guts learns to become a hero despite his flaws. Guts still has his flaws but he learns to become a better man. He becomes a true knight compared to the other knights that look like heroes yet they all become villains and monsters. Guts never changes into a villain, monster, nor demon. He fights the darkness within himself. This darkness is found in all humans including himself yet Guts chose redemption over corruption. Griffith let the darkness take over him. He started off as a handsome knight in shining armor, everyone saw Griffith as a hero but he’s a two faced wolf in sheep’s clothing that never learns from his mistakes. Griffith chose to become a monster for his own personal selfish gain while Guts chose to remain human to protect his loved ones. Everyone judged Guts yet Casca and especially Judeau let the good out in him. The Berserker armor gives Guts power yet he learns to not let the power get to his head. If Guts ever dies(I hope not), keep a memory of him. Not as a monster, not as a mercenary, not as a dark knight nor a true knight nor a hero but as a man who’s strong yet broken and human that strives to be better.
IMO, what makes Guts unique from every other protagonist was the subversion of the chosen one protagonist to a cursed one protagonist The typical chosen on protagonist has a humble beginning, becomes aware of what the protagonist is capable of because of some 300k year old telling and gaining support from everyone around him. In contrast to this, the cursed one starts off in a bad way. forced into a world that completely flips the one the protagonist knows upside down and essentially fucks everything up, but perseveres to remedy the wrong, even with everyone out for him. Its sort of funny since Guts's actions are similar to those of an anti-hero, as stated, but the former shell of a chosen one character can be seen under the light of a cursed one instead.
The fuckery with the concept of Chosen One is also used to contrast him with Griffith, who was chosen for a hellish ordeal, the same one that marked Guts as cursed forever with no coming back.
You missed the mark. All Guts ever wanted was a family. He thought he had found one in the hawks but then realized he was just being used by Griffith. Then he embarked on a quest to find his own family, he wanted his life to mean something for the people he loved. Because he realized, family is the only thing that could change him. And the change that we see in Guts is his transition from not caring to caring and loving his family. And we all learned that the first member of that family was close to him all this time. Caska.
no ur kinda wrong. Guts left the Hawk to find his dream so he can be friend with Griffith since Griffith said only the person who is on par with him can be his friend
I mean Griffith truly cared about his team. That is why the sacrifice worked. Griffith did say before that he would do whatever it takes to fullfil his dream and his goal. When he saw that kid die was basically the trigger for him to go all the way. He did do that but it was also wrong of him because he was very close to Guts, Casca and the rest to just sacrifice them on the spot. I have never felt so defeated and hopeless in the ending of 97 Berserk.
I love this idea that you finally point out; that Guts denies all predetermination of Destiny, and chooses to fight against it, tooth-and-nail at every turn. He refuses to die, refuses to just be a sacrifice. It's manga like Berserk that gave rise to the overused trope of over-powering anti-heroes and even villains choosing to aid the protagonist; this is because no one ever bothered to question why they help him. But characters such as Zodd and Skull Knight constantly test him, and Skull Knight even helps him alongside the other humans who want to see their hope come to life... Because at the end of the day, Guts refuses Fate, and deep inside characters like Skull Knight, they want to see him succeed. Whether or not they will believe he will do so, they give him the benefit of the doubt, and do whatever they can to give him some form of chance. And each time Guts is given an inch by those who do not believe in him, he takes a mile. It's why Zodd always relishes fighting him, because the Black Swordsman has come so damn far that Zodd might actually get a good fight out of him as he continues on his journey. And each time he fights Guts, a fire ignites in Zodd's eyes; a joy he long hadn't ever felt before... the excitement of a good fight, the dance of death unlike ever before experienced, and when he kills Gurunbeld, Zodd for a split-second feels the fear of death. Even Zodd the Immortal wants to see Guts succeed, because all Zodd ever wanted after be became the Immortal was a good death. It's why even in the Golden Age Arc, Zodd threw his sword into the fight with General Boscogne to give to Guts when his own sword broke; because he had a hunch that his small inch of aid might pay off in the end. So far, Zodd's tiny investment is paying off...
I think the whole Guts is "slimmer and more toned than the cliché bulky superhero" is not true. He's noticibly smaller in the later arcs because A) He's barely sleeping, B) he most likely isn't getting enough nutrition from eating, and C) the biggest reason, is because he's constantly using 120% of his muscles on the daily. Muscles grow when a person eats high carbs and tears them. It's called overcompensation. The thing is, there is such a thing as overworking/overexerting muscles. It can have the exact opposite effect, and overusing any muscle will lead to them not being able to repair itself in time, and they will shrink more and more you overexert them.
i mean, if we take science seriously, his body is inachievable naturally, especially considering he doesn't focus on hypertrophy and doesn't use steroids. I'm not sure we can use logic and bilogy to justify something like this
@@MatsMatsuo its probably just what the times trend is. Just like in JOJO, where everyone was super buff in the first 3 parts, but got significantly smaller in every following iteration. In the 80s and 90s super-buff dudes as heroes were the norm (like schwarzenegger and the likes), thats why a lot of older manga have more of the Buff-Hero Guys than newer Manga. Could be that Miura did the same thing and just made Guts smaller to go with the times.
It’s been explained in the manga that he lost weight after first using the Berserker armor. The armor pretty much ate into his body and caused massive blood loss when it was taken off him. So him being thinner in later pans is due to the consequences of utilizing the armor in battle
imma be real soul, I've watched this video about 10 times now, for some reason every few months I just get an urge to watch it. good character analysis video bro
I often look at berserk as the brothers Karamazov or the War and Peace of anime. It has so many layers that it baffles the mind. When you begin to analyze the depth of great literature it makes you analyze yourself.
I think an even better description of Guts trope is the greek tragedy hero. The struggle against destiny, caring only about himself or another specific person, are all typical characteristics of heroes of this kind of stories
in greek tragedy hero, the hero will fail in the end , with all the friends he have right now, in greek tragedy hero he will lose them again at some point or even worse
Something I realized on a recent rewatch of the '97 anime (and it's the same for the manga), is that Griffith at first is basically what the hero of these stories tend to be. An enigmatic and inspirational leader with skills beyond everyone else, with a destiny to rule. Even physically he falls under the look, with a striking and ethereal attractiveness. In any other story this would be about him and Guts would be an important side character. Even later in the series where arguably Griffith creates a utopia, it's tainted by many things underneath esp how he even got the power to do it. Because in the world of Berserk, no one that pure is truly pure. The actual story is a subversion of all the norms and Guts represents the closest thing to a hero a world like this can truly have. Someone who can be just as dark as everything else but maintains a goodness in him still and an ability to become a better person. To use a cliche reference, Guts is they deserve not the one they need (or the other way around, I duno).
Your videos are truly amazing. You can see how much time and effort you put into it. For a new RUclips channel with only 3 videos, you really blow it out of the water.
Absolutely. The analysis on Eren's development in Attack on Titan blew me away before even reaching its midpoint, and this video on Guts did not deliver any less. Oddly enough, this one was a bit more light-hearted through the humor every now and then, probably because it was specifically meant to balance out the otherwise very dystopic nature of Berserk.

It's clear that his trust has been violated a dozen times over, he's been hurt mentally, physically, sexually and any other way you can think of in ways that would break anyone else, and what actually makes him work is:
He's actually broken.
Damn right I cried
Jay S.
Thank you, now I remember why I love his character ❤️💪

RIP Miura-Sensei, fly to heaven on the wings of Angels and dance with all of your dead comrades from Berserk, we love you. Loudly crying face
I discovered his work of Berserk a few years back and adore it. We can only uplift him to everyone who has yet to discover his work. Berserk is amazing.
Don’t worry, one of his students said that he will finish Miura’s work. Imagine what would happen if his students got to make an R-Rated Godzilla movie. Would you watch it?
@@rickyrackey7930 I heard that it's all speculation on finishing or doing anything with Berserk.
And no. I'm not that into Kaiju films.
What I took from his works is that he's not a fan of angels lol
But yeah, may he rests in peace. He left us a masterpiece.
Go read it.
Poor Turin
The Children of Húrin is the crown jewel of Tolkien's writing imo
I have always thought that "the children of hurin" is "berserk before beserk", for me when I first read it, Turin turambar was an enormous parallel to Guts, I wouldn't be surprised if Miura got some inspiration from him when he first started berserk.
And I always imagined that the end of the children of hurin could also be a clue to imagine how Berserk's end would be.
Now that Miura is in greener pastures, I'm certain that he is at same corner of heaven with Tolkien, both are without equal. Keep struggling, Aurë entuluva
I didn't like The Children of Húrin. I don't like the arrogance of the main character
The story was never finished, but Tolkien's son rewriten it. And boy he did a mess. Characters were dumb, killing each other over some silly arguments. Turin enslaving dwarfs who tried to help him. Theres also an omage to the british royal families in a form of incest.

Man we all just want to give him hugs because he needs it all
exactly T.T i just want my boi be happy
“A character who’s last canon smile was in fucking 1998” we’ve cracked it boys, that’s the whole manga. Pack it up.
The best part is he doesn’t say he’s fighting his destiny he just does.
IMO, what makes Guts unique from every other protagonist was the subversion of the chosen one protagonist to a cursed one protagonist
The typical chosen on protagonist has a humble beginning, becomes aware of what the protagonist is capable of because of some 300k year old telling and gaining support from everyone around him.
When was Guts ever the chosen one?
Thats what he's saying, that he is the cursed one, not chosen.
The fuckery with the concept of Chosen One is also used to contrast him with Griffith, who was chosen for a hellish ordeal, the same one that marked Guts as cursed forever with no coming back.

zegodhand we love you daddy!
zegodhand WE'RE NOT WORTHY!
Donovan is Guts
It's kind kind of wierd to see you here but also not because you do beserk videos daily
dont worry about your upload schedule, Beserk is a slow paced manga so posting videos slowly makes sense
Caska.
beautiful
no ur kinda wrong. Guts left the Hawk to find his dream so he can be friend with Griffith since Griffith said only the person who is on par with him can be his friend
@@kenhdautientoitaora7676 and what ended up being his dream? Who did he find again? and did he create a family with that person?
Guts torreto!?!?
I mean Griffith truly cared about his team. That is why the sacrifice worked. Griffith did say before that he would do whatever it takes to fullfil his dream and his goal. When he saw that kid die was basically the trigger for him to go all the way. He did do that but it was also wrong of him because he was very close to Guts, Casca and the rest to just sacrifice them on the spot. I have never felt so defeated and hopeless in the ending of 97 Berserk.
Im a simple man...i see guts, and well.. you know... *Subbed*
Everything Salty I will follow you in this struggle my friend, for how will we ever be truly equals
GATTS*
Guts theme over him reflecting and sitting down on a hill is so impactful despite the fact I’ve never watched the anime or read the manga
@@dankrigby5621 Yeah, that was my point, Guts getting less bulky is (most likely) just design change. nothing deep or related to the BERSEKER universe
It’s been explained in the manga that he lost weight after first using the Berserker armor. The armor pretty much ate into his body and caused massive blood loss when it was taken off him. So him being thinner in later pans is due to the consequences of utilizing the armor in battle

Graveside Poet I compared myself to Guts from berserk.............
I love literature the only thing I can connect
Guts is just lonely. Incredibly lonely.
