It is with heavy hearts that KIX have announced their retirement from performing live. Lead singer, Steve Whiteman made the announcement from the stage at M3 Festival at Merriweather Post Pavilion on May 7. Metal Edge spoke to Steve Whiteman exclusively earlier that day.
“After much thought we have decided to call it a career,” says Whiteman. “It was obviously not an easy decision to make, but the right one at this time in our lives for our families and the band.”
KIX’s final performance ever is set for September 17 at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, MD. “KIX…Walkin’ Away, The Final Show” will see the original band members Steve Whiteman, Brian Forsythe, Ronnie Younkins, Jimmy Chalfant, and longtime bassist Mark Schenker take the stage for the very last time. The night will also include some very special guests. Tickets for the show will go on sale May 9 at 10:00am HERE.
“We wanted to do this show for our fans,” says Whiteman. “We owe a lot to them for their never-ending support over our long 45-year career. It was tempting to just fade away and stop booking gigs and ride off into the sunset, but we wanted our fans to be part of a local farewell show and give them a chance to see the band one last time.”
KIX formed in Hagerstown, Maryland in 1978 and have enjoyed a lasting 45-year career as one of hard rock’s most notable groups. The band’s retirement signifies the end of an era as KIX was one of the last touring bands from the 80’s rock scene who were still at the top of their game. Highly respected by fans, peers, and critics, KIX is deservingly very proud of their long legacy.
KIX released many albums throughout their career including, 1985’s breakout album Midnite Dynamite. From the slash-and-burn riffing of the album’s title track and the high-speed antics of “Layin’ Rubber,” to the Aerosmith-flavored groove of numbers like “Cold Shower,” and “Sex,” to the heart-break melancholia of the album’s sole ballad, “Walkin’ Away,” Midnite Dynamite was packed with material that delivered not only attitude in spades, but also pummeled the listener with hook after hook.
In 2014, KIX released Rock Your Face Off, their first studio effort since 1995’s Show Business. The album debuted at #1 on Amazon’s “Hard Rock and Metal “chart, in the Top 50 on Billboard’s “Top 200 Albums” chart, #5 on the “Independent Albums “chart, #11 on the “Top Internet “chart, #17 on the “Top Rock Albums” chart, #27 on the “Indie/Small Chain Core Stores” chart and #33 on the “Physical” chart. In 2016, KIX released Can’t Stop The Show: The Return Of KIX, a two-disc DVD/CD set that entered the Billboard Top Music Video Sales chart at #3, and rose to the #1 position, the band’s highest charting debut and first #1 ever in their history. The 71-minute film offered an in-depth look into KIX’s decision to record their first new album, 2014’s Rock Your Face Off, in almost 20 years. In 2018, KIX celebrated the 30th Anniversary of their biggest album, Blow My Fuse, with Blow My Fuse Re-Blown, a two-disc set with a remixed/remastered version of the album, along with the original demo recordings for all 10 songs. The reunion with long-time collaborator and the album’s original producer Beau Hill (Alice Cooper, Ratt, Warrant, KIX) for this remix sparked the initiative to revisit Midnite Dynamite and take a similar approach to updating KIX’s legacy. In 2020, on the 35th anniversary of the release of Midnite Dynamite, KIX once again partnered with Beau Hill to release Midnite Dynamite Re-Lit.
As for KIX’s final show, Brad Canfield, Vice President of Operations for Merriweather Post Pavilion says,
“When we started the M3 Rock Fest 14 years ago to pay homage to the legends of hard rock, KIX was the first call we made. They’re M3’s hometown heartbeat, and the only band to play every single edition. We’ll miss them greatly, but we’re honored and excited to host them on our historic stage one last time this September to give them the sendoff they truly deserve.”
Whiteman concludes, “I just want everyone to end up on their feet and celebrate all the good times we’ve had over the years. It’s a party and you are all invited!”
Kix (stylized as KIX) is an American glam metal and hard rock band that achieved popularity during the 1980s. Led by front man Steve Whiteman and bassist Donnie Purnell, the band's classic lineup was rounded out by guitarists Ronnie "10/10" Younkins and Brian "Damage" Forsythe and drummer Jimmy "Chocolate" Chalfant. Kix covered AC/DC, Aerosmith, April Wine, Led Zeppelin, and others before signing with Atlantic Records in 1981. Since peaking in the late-1980s, band members have continued to intermittently record and tour, including the Rocklahoma festival in 2008 in Oklahoma. In addition, they are a consistent presence at the annual M3 Rock Festival in the band's home state of Maryland. Развлечения
Nothing but love and respect for KIX! Legends and the end of an era!!!
One of the greatest of all time
One of the most underrated rock bands of all time. Love you forever KIX!!!!!!
One of the greatest rock bands of all time
We all get older and tired, you gave it all you had. It was an honor to here you sing that killer tune one last time,Thank You! Be Well.
These guys get it. At some point you just have to say I'm done. Sux getting old but it happens to everyone. Saw these guys 4 or 5 years ago and they killed it. Happy retirement!!!!
It’s the end of a great Rock ‘N Roll era.❤️🤘
It really is
Kix will never die awesome band ♥️
This is one of the most challenging songs to sing live written. Imagine going on stage 35 years later at over 60 years of age. He was brave for hanging in there and I commend him for deciding ro hang it up and enjoy the rest of his days
It's hard for me to "like" this video but I respect these guys and love their music. No muso really wants to call it a day but they've earned it and deserve it.
Much respect to KIX. Been a fan of theirs since Blow My Fuse and I will remain a fan until the day I die. Thank you for the many years of GREAT music! Enjoy retirement, gentlemen. You've earned it!
Nothing but respect...hes having a hard time singing.
Better than playing to backing tracks.
It's coming for all of us, Steve...you are THE MOST underrated front man in rock...thanks for all the music, guys!
I love KIX....these guys have always kicked ass
met Steve about 10 years ago at some bar in Perry Hall, literally NO ONE ELSE my age knew who this dude was, my band was opening that night so we had the rest of the night to bullshit and hang around, talking to Steve for 30 mins made the entire evening, what a cool down to earth guy, big records or not you can tell he never lost that “local band” mentality. what a way to end it, at home where you should be.
Hell yes Kix, thanks for all the ass kicking love! See you there September 17th.
Oh men, i'm crying. So many memories and happy moments with this band and their albums, I'm going to miss them a lot!!! Greetings from Córdoba Argentina Kix.
Just over 2 weeks till the last show. It's gonna be great and sad
@@13thHourPhoto😢😢😢❤❤❤
Thank you Kix! I've been jamming with you the entire 45 years! Get off the road and take care of yourself! Job well done guys 🤙
Tough song to sing at any age. This was a good show by all accounts. Good for them.
To be fair I was standing directly in front of the vocal fill (speaker)
I was on the floor right of stage 3 rows of chairs back!! Awesome weekend
Having the camera that close to the vocal monitor doesnt present this the way it was heard out front. That is Steve with no compressor, no delay, no reverb. Absolutely dry.
However, as a singer and a bar room band lifer, it is great to see a real pro, keep perfect control of his volume and technique and hit every note. That's all metal singers do folks. Hit the notes and let the sound man do his job and make it shine. When you are doing 4 or 5 shows a week on tour either you do what he was doing or you blow your voice out mid tour.
Steve will spend the rest of his life tending his many vocal students. I'm sure the rest of the guys from the original lineup got themselves financially ready for this. God Bless fellas. As long as a man's name is spoken he is never truly dead.
Your name KIX will outlive all of us. Thanks for the memories. See you at Merriweather in September.
very well stated.....No shame at all.....like he said, it's time.....hopefully Brian continues with Rhino Bucket
Kix is and was one of the most under rated bands ever.
Tony you are so spot on with that. I didn't get a chance to reply to the other comment yet. I was standing in front of the vocal fill to record the announcement . Kix still sounds at the top of their game. Not a completely fair representation
Brian is continuing with Rhino Bucket and Mark and Bob are continuing with Sun Dogs
I really loved that "version" it was just so raw. Have not heard one like that. Man now I wanna hear more songs like that raw vocals.
I agree with this comment! And where in the hell were the harmonies?
Blow my fuse is one of the greatest albums ever!
Thank you ❤️
Thanks for all the great music and great times I will always love kix❤
Truely the best
great video! ive seen these guys many times over the years. always a great show
Respect to Kix who was able to make a comeback in the last 15-20 years grind their ass off with live shows build up their popularity to be able to play larger shows than many bands who sold more records back in the 80's and early 90's ode to their dedication and professional
a lot of these bands I grew up with man they’re disappearing. It’s too bad. Time went really fast extremely fast.
Total respect, its tough to do but it pays honor to the fans and the music and let it go out with dignity. Don’t rip off fans with prerecorded shows and fake bs. Good for Kix, enjoy retirement!
I was jamming these guys back in the 80's . when they were fresh .in the 2000's I bought a lot of CDs of band's I always liked in 2009 I was jamming ( don't close your eyes) and as it turned out while I was jamming that song at that very moment my wife took her last breath due to her OD ING on pain pills & cocaine . She's with the lord now. I didn't know I would never see her again. I quit doing drugs years before that. But don't close your eyes will always have a special place in my heart God bless all the users out there . Don't close your eyes. It might be the last time you will. God bless you all
Damn man! Sorry for your loss. Pretty deep man
@@chrisbelsito4231 thank you . Much respect
Made the final show. It was one HELL of a show.
Great tune. I remember when it was released, you couldn't turn the radio on without hearing that song. Good luck.
Great band .lot of killer album and lifetime of music ..hate to see it ..they are and will always be legends
Dont close your eyes is my fave kix song and they are one of my fave band in this planet thank u for the music
I grew up with this.thank you.😢
It was emotionally hard to film because I have lived them for so long. But so happy to see them going out on top.
It's been a long Ride been a fan from the beginning the memorys are massive and as long as Cd's and Videos exist KIX will live forever !!!!!!!!!
KIX has ALWAYS been a great live band... they deserved much more recognition than they ever really recieved. This is the most I've seen Steve struggle to sing any of the songs. And in part, another reason he & the band decided to finally hang it up. That song can't be easy no matter your age but Steve always made it seem easy. But to still do it, & have that range into his mid 60s is extremely impressive no matter how you swing it. I'll be there Sept 17th & will be glad I get to see them one last time!
saw these guys crammed into a pale blue pinto driving into Baltimore on 70 around 1985ish. And that wasn't even their beginning. A long career. Best wishes.
Saw them last night @ Power Plant Live in Baltimore. Incredible rock show. Have tix for the final show at Merriweather in September. Man, will these guys be missed! Legends!
It's gonna be an amazing show
I Love This Band So Many Great Songs❤
Me too. So sad to see it all end but I am happy for them.
I cant wait to be there , its such a great venue
Gonna be a great (and sad ) show
Your to young to Retire Steve. I Love you guys to Death. I hope to be able to see you Dudes one last Time. We Always attended your shows at Rocky Gap Resort even in the Rain. You will be sadly missed. My Wife and Daughter Love you Guys. Rockers all The Way. Sadly Missed.

Kix are for everyone you guys are awesome .Yall have made some of my most favorite music in my life so for that thanx so much Iwish Inew how many hours Istudied your music fantastic just sayin Rock On !!!!
Gran banda!
I got to see these guys in 1989 with Ratt & Great White. They were great.
Saw the same show in Cincinnati
Cheers boys. Great job! God Bless in your retirement!
Thanks for the memories KIX thank you very much for what you guys have done in your career , I well continue rocking your music again thank you
Love song
See you at York pa. Kix
Much love to Steve and the boys!
Thanks for being a great band =)
Love and respect, Kix❤ … Thanks for the great music🙏🏾
Great times in the 80's! All of us were thrilled back in high school whenever local rock stations in the mid-Atlantic area played Yeah Yeah Yeah at night. I wore out that first album!
Almost brought tears to my eyes
I can admit it, I was crying my eyes out. I knew they were going to be making the announcement, and it still took the wind out of me .
@@13thHourPhoto another great weekend!!
@@13thHourPhoto I wonder if Ronnie will come back for that show
@@tommyduncan9158 says on their website he will
I think that's the plan at least for a couple songs
Love this band \m/
Me too
Still listening 2 Midnight Dynamite!!
Love kix seen them so many times hammer jacks days and rams head this is sad news Lenora 🤪 ♥️
I loved Kix since I was a kid!! I hope they do a US tour because I would love to see them live!! 🤟🏽🥺
he said the last date of the tour was some city in the Midwest. So they are out there somewhere on tour. If I was you I'd hit the web page for the band
and and see how close to you they are getting. You may have to travel a little to get there but man are they worth it
Sept 17th Merriwether Post Pavilion Columbia Maryland is the last show ever
2nd to last show is in mid west. Last show is in Maryland
@@13thHourPhoto Can't wait...got my tickets!
I'll be there for sure
I am really sad to see them go 😢❤
Me too :(
bin with them since day one, gonna be missed , thanks, you owe us nothing \m/
Wow! Love KIX don't close your eyes till these years ☺️ one of my fave ballads 👍 hope the guys health doing fine 💪
Jimmy seems to be doing better but doesn't want to keep risking his health . I think Steve is just tired and ready to spend life relaxing with his wife. Mark Brian Bob and Ronnie will all continue in their other bands from what I have heard.
Love and respect these guys! Would be nice for Steve if he had a bit of backing vocal support in his later years.
To be fair I was standing in front of the vocal fill monitor so the house mixx was a bit better
So much respect for Kix.. at least they get it. They know when to retire... Maybe they should tell some of the other groups like Motley Crue, and warrant. Oh don't worry, there's a lot more, They know who they are too
I love kix
Me too
Such an underated band!
It’s over they had a great run, when they were at their peak they left the walls singed at Lamours in Brooklyn after getting off the stage in the 80’s and 90’s when they had Ronnie 10/10 and Donnie purnell, The human chemistry unfortunately gets lost,Kix will always be for kids at Heart!!!!!!
Damn, just blew my fuse with this news. Saw them back in clubs.😮💨
Love it happy retirement Kix
Kix rocks! God bless. JESUS SAVES!
Love these guys....seen them over 100 times since 2012, but just not the same without founding member Ronnie Younkins tearing it up on the guitar.....sonically AND visually! Please do the right thing you guys & bring him back for the last round....no way to say goodbye after 46 f'n years c'mon!! Respect the legacy and respect your fans....go out as a real band with integrity & show everyone you are the real deal that we all know you are....KIX forever!
I am pretty sure Ronnie is coming back for the final show
@@13thHourPhoto hope so....should be the WHOLE show, but probably not....Bob can play along somehow....
Bob is great and a super nice guy. I'm just happy that Ronnie will be involved. I'm hearing Brad will also.
Yeah Bobs good....sure he wouldn't mind playing alongside Ronnie just one time before the end....anything else is going to be a bummer.
Kix forever...
AMEN to that
nice to see jimmy behind the kit again
A really cool song!
Seeing him live he normally knocks it out the park, but he's clearly struggling now.
Honestly I was standing next to the vocal fill when I was recording it so you don't get the whole mix , so it seems rougher than it really was
Never thought they'd do this. So sad.
From Minnesota
Ahhh…makin me feel old…remember these guys so we’ll as the Shooze…..they tried to hire me as their FOH mixer way back in the day when Joe Pracopio was their sound man …but I saw they way Donnie treated him and I said no way!….but we used to hang out together at the Old Mill and the Mountainview Inn when I was mixing for a band called Kidd Blast and Steve was dating our singer Andrea Zimmit (RIP)…..and he caught warts from her and wrote the song Cold Shower…..but my favorite guy was Ronnie Younkins…spent a few nights up all night partying at his place …but they were all good guys…well, except Donnie…lolol
Woe! I never got the heads up!!
But I was blocked from Their last show at the whiskey ago by a house band and for unethical reasons
Now
How many of us did not get a heads up? Only to be given surprise you missed the last show?
If so, please leave me a message.Because if we can get enough names we can call them back by popular demand
Just saw their last show at Rams Head - Great show! They have always been a great live band, and although it’s sad that it’s coming to an end, their music will always live on, and plenty of great live performances on RUclips to get your KIX FIx. They all have side projects outside of the band, so I feel they all will still do something in some capacity - just not with KIX. Jimmy is the only one I see to totally retire - but we’ll see. Thank you KIX for all the wonderful Music, and memories
Rhino Bucket , Blues Vultures and Sun Dogs will still be out there . Jimmy and Steve really want to retire . It's sad , but they gave us so much. They deserve the break .
@@13thHourPhoto I think Steve will still perform live, but it will only be a handful of shows, and will be local venues. His traveling days for gigs are over. He also has his solo album he released not too long ago. But who knows? Maybe he moves to some tropical island and we never hear from him again - Whatever the case, he deserves to do whatever the hell he wants to do.
@@13thHourPhoto Just subscribed to your channel - I like the content 👍
Thank You So Much!!!!!! It's a mix of stuff but I try and keep it fun
Least this band is going out on top ! Really!! Unlike some of these other bands these Days.😢
Very sad, saw them more times than I can remember back in the old Hammerjack’s days… end of an era! 😩 Glad they’re going out with dignity, unlike some bands that use backing tracks!
Amen to that. Kix is the gold standard when it comes to rock and roll
KIX, RATT, Britny Fox Seattle '89, killer show!
Hell yeah
Would definitely have a back up plan for Ronnie
Ronnie is doing really good these days I'm really happy for him
💌📫🤘📻
Noooooiooooooooo
I'll go to their retirement show next year or the one after that.
Sept 17th is def the last date
I remember hearing a song on the radio coming home from the beach in Delaware returning to PA.the song was tell me yea, yea, yea it was 80or 81 I was an instant fan, saw them more than any other band ever,The Metron shows were fn epic ,recorded live shows from the Metron 3 times off radio broadcasts got autographs at Saturdays Market rip and record store in Hummelstown. I love this band and am happy and proud to be a fan for over 43 years, thanks guys your music will live with me forever and made my life better, rock nfn roll.
not final they have other shows booked in 2023
The video is of them announcing the final show Sept 17th
Coldplays “42” copied the damn intro melody from this song
Good band. But Whiteman didn't need to throw shade on Hinckley, MN, so that's a stupid comment, and that's coming from someone from the West Coast. While I understand the hometown angle, it's not like ending your career in Columbia, Maryland, is akin to anything more notable.
For a band from Maryland there is only one place to end their career.
@@13thHourPhoto Yes, I admitted as much. The point is he could have said it just like that instead of insulting Hinckley, MN.
Too many people get there feelings hurt over dumb stuff. It was a joke. Get over it .
@@13thHourPhoto My feelings aren’t hurt. Just pointing out that it was an idiotic comment. Step aside.
Never got the respect they deserve
Honestly one of the greatest rock bands of all time
They got pretty big during the Blow my Fuse period - all over MTV - Platinum album - Playing to sold out arena's - Still to this day sell out pretty much every club around the country. Respected by their peers - and the rock community, and known as one of the best live rock bands ever. Thousands of bands would kill for that career!
We all hope Donnie and Ronnie play the last show! Get rid of the scabs.
Ronnie Yes Donnie No
Old guys
Bring back Ronnie ya bozos!!
He is playing the final show
So bad
I'm going to celebrate kix by doing there music on an old very old used Jackson called AssKickxx
That sucks.
