I've been on plenty of stages, and did some commercials back in the day. To be perfectly honest, I was never a big fan of film work. I did it what little I did because the money was good, but it's not really a fun experience for me. Having said that, if you know of a producer I'd be willing to push down my distaste for film work in exchange for the role of "Tim", the wacky neighbor in whatever crapfest sitcom they're peddling.
Looking good Cody! And a solid review. After 4 games of 3rd edition, I've had some great times with it, but I still don't quite get along with this game. But I understand the love Twillight Imperium recieves, It's a solid and wonderfully thematic game.
Question, though, now that I think of it: I believe you said this is your favorite 4x game in the video. How do you feel it compares to Space Empires 4x?
You didn't said anything about trade, witch also undergone some major changes. I didn't had a chance to play TI 4 yet, so I wonder how new mechanics change game for trade based races like Hacan. I think changing from TI 3 to TI4 is advisible if you have only core game of TI 3. Lots of mechanics and upgrades from TI3 expansions exist in TI 4 core.
You are correct, the video was already running pretty long so I didn't include the stuff on trade. I really like how trade is handled in this game. Big improvement over TI3. I like it a lot!
TDG lives! Thanks as always for the review Cody. How do the new objectives stack up? The revamped TI3 cards fostered more combat / exploration and interaction... are these same, different etc?
Thank you for the quick reply. I just discovered your channel and am watching the reviews that interest me. Thank you for your entertaining and informative videos. I love your reviews of older games, like Origins of WW2.
Indeed, that is the challenge, finding time. I also like the look of Victory in Europe by Columbia Games (it appeals to me more than Triumph and Tragedy, as a game as well as aesthetically.
Me and my brother played a game like this when we were really little. I was in first grade and he was in fifth grade. He told me I couldn't have but one carrier ship and he took all the rest. It was either this game or another kinda like it. Was this game even out in the very eighties?
No, the first edition came out in 1997. Was it spaced themed, or something else. Axis and Allies was popular in the early 1980s, and had carrier minis.
Hey Cody! Never played TI up to now. Our group loves backstabbing, politicking, negotiating, thematic and confrontational games, but we are only 4. Does it worth it to purchase it? I mean it has all aspects of what we want but how does it play with 4 players?
I've played TI3 with four players and I rather enjoyed it. I was opposed to playing it with so few at first, but I had some friends that really wanted to play it. I was pleasantly surprised. To be sure, six players is optimal, but it still is a great game with four. I think it would lose something at three. Five wasn't bad either.
Chances of getting a group of players interested in playing this together in my area vs playing the original DOS game Master of Orion....looks like I be saving some $$$
I've thought about that, but I'm reluctant to mix components when you know the expansion is around the corner. I suppose at some point if they don't make an expansion fast enough I may do that. For the first game, I wanted to pay TI4 "as is", and didn't want to complicate it for newer players.
I have Twilight Imperium 3rd, without expansions and I was going to buy TI 4, because it has expansions of 3rd edition, but when you said that there is no Distant Suns option, I was like: "hello no, Im not buying this." Thanks for saving me lots of money!
I've been considering getting this. I rarely would ever have the opportunity to play, buuuut it'd be nice to have for that once a year throwdown, I think.
I disagree on Distant Suns; it kinda sucked... if you got some crappy tiles next to your home worlds, you’d be gimped for the rest of the game... and 8 hours is a long time to sit there and not be able to really impact the game, whereas someone with positive tiles jumps out to an insurmountable lead. All due to the flip of a couple of tiles. Far too much of an impact too early in the game, and none of the tiles were all that interesting or added much in the way of storytelling. I like that 4th edition clamps down on randomness and brings grand strategy and negotiation to the fore.
I disagree to your disagreement. I don't recall ever playing a game with Distant Suns that severely hampered or advantaged a person as much as you suggest. By contrast, I love getting into combat early in the game against NPCs, and I do love the dash of randomness that it offers. For me Distant Suns is frosting on the cake. But, I suppose, it is not for everyone.
I had several horrible experiences with this game. I do not recommend this game for most people. Even if you enjoy long war games, this game is way too much euro & resource efficiency than battling. Although the battle and units are great in the game, often times you will lose because the point system rewards pure money, or pure influence, or pure tech, which has little risk to get compare to battling someone else. Usually units are meant for more defensive plays, or some quick points.... meaning most people will be building units for 1 or 2 major attacks in the whole game of 4-8 hours of the game, everything else non-combat "fun". I also found it annoying that you can't have an alliance to win with your trading partner, which doesn't bother me directly, but.... some opponents (very jealous players) will start calling me "King Maker" if I was trading with a single person... while he was refusing to trade with me....and I usually only have 2 neighbors.... so no alliance, and being trapped by 2 neighbors can be a nightmare for trading and politics. Voting phase and picking Strategy cards, and waiting for secondary actions is also wonky mechanic (mainly time consuming, I think it gotta be a waste of 30-60 minutes per a round). The Voting phase usually wastes alot of time on picking one slight advantage in the game, which I think would be much faster if it was instead replaced with a randomizer mechanic to select certain players or planets. I think it would save time to vote out a strategy card, and let everyone do a secondary effect whenever as a turn action instead of waiting for a player across the 6 player table to play it. You cannot homebrew the voting phase out of the game because the influence resource is all over game (factions and planets).
I love this game. It was my favorite for years until it was recently displaced. It is not, however, a wargame There are elements of a wargame in it, but that is not what the game is about. It is a game of subtler Machiavellian manipulation. There is a lot of luck here, to be sure, but it's a game of personality as much as probability. Every time I play this game I have a blast. You are, of course, correct that it is not a game for everybody, however.
@@TheDiscriminatingGamer I love that fact that you are honest sir, and you take the time to reply with me even if you politely disagree with me. :) I think your reviews are generally the best, but there a few games that I can't agree with you on your reviews. I think Twilight Imperium is a overall good quality game compare to other board games (that's because I don't think there is many high quality board games in general in this 4x format like Twilight Imperium), but I just think that the bigger the game is, the harder to balance the mechanics and time consumption... it's very rare for a game in a long duration format to be properly balanced. The only game that I found to be well built in the long format is the Axis and Allies game, I know it's a war game, but I haven't found any other games yet that I felt that focuses on the gameflow better than that game. I really enjoy the Axis and Allies has team players, because they can help each other plan stuff together faster, and it's easier for the losing team to "give up" near the end instead of fighting all the way through ( I don't how you play Axis and Allies). I am also trying to stay away from the long format on purpose because it's difficult to bring out for local people so it's not like I am actively searching for long format games. So far I found Dune to be the best war game because it's much shorter, and it still has some capitalism and fluxing of rules, and yet we are finishing the games between 2-3 hours (very fast), and it has alliance system.
I saw your War Room review, so I would like to try it out, but it's a expensive game. Right now I finishing up Gloomhaven and playing Tainted Grail game. I really like thematic co-op games as well. I really like Dead of Winter and Shadows over camelot, Robinson Crusoe, but I haven't tried out Battlestar Galactica for traitor games. I think I also like Escape rooms and detective type of games as well but I haven't bought any of them yet . Party games I like coup, shadow hunters, and human punishment game. I will see if I can get War Room from an auction on BBG or ebay or something like that. Yeah you seem like a pretty cool guy but I doubt we would ever get to meet up in Person since i live in Canada, and I assume you live somewhere far away in the USA.
I don't know. Maybe it's the bright ship colours that make it look old-school or maybe I generally don't like boards made out of hexagons. The idea of this game excites me but the look simply does not. Glad you like it though :)
Great channel by the way. Stumbled upon it while looking for Star Wars Rebellion reviews and instantly subscribed. The game is due to arrive tomorrow. I'll have to unsub though if the game turns out to be bad :D

This is why I love this channel.
If you watch only one vid, you will know that Cody really really love board gaming.
He is a real fan.
Indeed I am. Thank you, sir!
Great to see you back and bearded. This is probably my favorite board game review channel.
Thank you, sir! So far, this is my favorite comment!
Great review. New to TI; buying TI4. Thanks for the guidance.
Happy to help. You will get a kick out of it.
Saw that grin on your face in the thumbnail and immediately knew the result...can't wait to get my copy!
Noel Dillabough You’re gonna love it!
Enjoyed your review and enthusiasm for the game. Thx Cody. Keep it up.
Thank you, sir! Enjoyed your comment!
11:50 - I was laughing really hard ) It was unexpectable and funny! Great review.

Are the Factions color specific, like the yellow player has only X amount of the seventeen factions to choose from?
The colors don't matter. You select a faction, then select a color. All the colors have the same amount of stuff.
@@TheDiscriminatingGamer Thanks. I noticed that the Factions have different color boxes, so I wasn't sure.
Good to see a new vid from you Cody! Keep rocking the beard!

I'm sure we'll have more opportunities in the future.
Awesome beard man! Some dude told me recently my beard needed it's own instagram, whatever that means. I cannot wait to play some TI4! Awesome review!
Thank you, sir. May you live to be 1000.

Yeah- there is a lot of good interaction that the cards provide.
If you have Star Wars Rebellion, do you need TI4? Your opinion?
Yes. Yes you do. They are VERY different games.

So is this the evil codey from the alt universe? Why not just use the distant sun rules and tokens from time 3 an expansion s?
I've thought about that, but I'm reluctant to mix components when you know the expansion is around the corner. I suppose at some point if they don't make an expansion fast enough I may do that. For the first game, I wanted to pay TI4 "as is", and didn't want to complicate it for newer players.

The new TI4 expansion has an equivalent to Distant Suns, so maybe check it out
This reminds me of Galactic Civilizations Two.
I have never played it.

I will. Count on it!
How did Ernest Hemingway replace Cody, where has he gone and what happened to him. LOL :)
Let's just say, the bell tolled for Cody.
I almost skipped this because I couldn’t think of a more obvious reviewer / game review outcome, but I figured I'd give the beard a chance.
See- it's working already!
I've been considering getting this. I rarely would ever have the opportunity to play, buuuut it'd be nice to have for that once a year throwdown, I think.
It's worth it. A few years ago some friends and I got TI3 to the table four times that year. It was a good year.
Man! Did anything else get done that year?
Id buy this game in a heart beat if I had some people to play it with. My friends suck like that.
So get some new friends! Its not hard. Find a local gamer group on FB. That's what I did when I moved to Texas.
Twilight Imperium is my most bought game. I think I've bought TI3 three times already for various reasons.
