What I dont understand is how people let themselves get trolled like this, clearly the game tells that you have been invaded, yet people go and pick up random dropped items right next to ledges or they rush the dude in the middle of a skinny bridge without assuming he has some way of knocking you off.

You can see the Cat Ring's effect when Fighter hits the ground. Surprising he survived that distance, yes, but he also slid off the previous platform a little, so that likely reset his fall damage a little.
I’m a year late but at the top left of his screen this is a picture of a cat which indicates he has the cat ring. Which, negates all live-able fall damage

once laid in the chapel next to a crouched hollow corpse as though I was a body on its lap for like 2 hours. 9 invaders just passed me by. Didn't even register.
These troll builds are interesting. I'm guessing a good ring load out is cat ring, carthus milk ring, one of those trick phantom rings and the hornet ring.
The canvas talisman used to cast or poise cast force, chaos infused dagger with 130 crit modifier combined with hornet ring to be even more disgusting with riposte and backstabs, milwood bow for its optional explosive weapon art.
