I always loved how Jane keeps a cool head throughout the entire episode. Rushes to follow orders and close the doors leading below at the start, and then doesn't let Simon open them until it's clear. Getting on to Wash and Mal for arguing and using up the air. And finally prepping a suit for Mal before they left. Just doing whatever he can to help the situation. I may not trust him with my money but he's certainly cool in a crisis.
I gotta admit, hearing Ron Glass say 14:10 "We'll be here" with that warm smile, while knowing that he's gone kinda choked me up. It's the first time I've seen this episode since his passing.
Hands down my fav episode. The part I like most is that Mal is willing to sacrifice everything he has to save them all. But, if he's going down it'll be on his ship and (mostly) on his terms.
I love how this episode shows Mal's wisdom in dealing with his crew. He speaks to them differently depending on who they are and how they need to be spoken to. He was soft with Kaylee because she's a skittish little thing. He was hard with Wash when Wash didn't want to leave Zoe's side because that's what it took to get through to him. ... Such a great leader.
The best part of this episode to me is how Mal tailors his approach to each member of the crew around their personality - he needs a strong hand with Wash to get him off his focus on Zoe, but he's very patient and gentle with Kaylee who he knows is at her best when she isn't anxious. Jayne, he's all business, because he's all business. But my favorite moment is just how he delivers that line "everybody dies alone" - it is a grim but unrelenting truth; nobody's going through with you, no matter how many people are around you. The last steps are for you only. EDIT: Nathan's direction for that last shot was to look toward Serenity like he just saw the love of his life across the room
The part that broke is the same part that Kaylee's been saying needed to be replaced since the first episode. It's only because Kaylee is such a good mechanic that it didn't blow up earlier.
@@BubbaCoop wait until after the episode is watched then it is an Easter egg. Before, it is a spoiler. It is like you have never watched a reaction channel before.
Alan Tudyk took the big red "recall" button from the Firefly set and presented it to Joss Whedon, telling him that if Whedon managed to get the series renewed, he could press it to call the cast back. (from the DVD commentary,)
Probably my favorite episode. I just realized Mal summed up Jayne perfectly for all occasions with: "useful if you run into trouble, but don't trust him and don't let him take over". That's pretty much all you need to know about him. All of their origin stories are awesome. Fun watching someone else see it for the first time!

The commentary and BTS for this episode are worth looking up. Dale (in another comment) already mentioned Torres getting married to "Morpheus" at that time. In the opening flashback, when Mal and Zoey step around that spot (where something must've died) in the cargo hold, it is the same place where Mal has collapsed in the "present". The effects people blasted a wind cannon at that dinner table, which is why everyone getting blown back was such a good effect. There was an actual fireball coming at Fallion when he was closing that door, so not all of the fear was acting. There is an outtake where Fillion and Torres are also wearing "Wash" staches.
@@senecakw Could very well be. Which also works perfectly, because Cptn Reynolds being shot and collapsing in a heap on that same spot is a pretty $h!tty situation....
This episode is a masterpiece of story telling. Even though I recognize it as the best written, I place it in my top 4 favorites. There is far more to talk about than I'm capable of doing in a comment post. - You know things are bad when Jayne IS the voice of reason. Yelling and fighting does use up oxygen faster. PS: Oxygen is a gas. (Out of Gas). - "Catalyzer on the port compression coil blew" - Kaylee has been complaining about this part since the pilot episode. It's the perfect touch at the end of the episode when we see the ship salesman was trying to sell Mal a different ship but his heart was set on Serenity. This is the episode where I like to talk about Mal metaphorically. I like to think every crew member represents an aspect of Mal. Also, in an abstract way - Serenity is the tenth member of the crew (inability to settle under Alliance rule. Desire to wander). Aspects of Mal: Zoe - Military Comradery and command structure Wash - Wit, seeing the humorous side of things Inara - Love and the inability to express it (Brought on by the war in Mal's case) Shepherd Book - Religion (repressed by War PTSD for Mal), the belief & desire to do right Kaylee - Optimism in life, (Also repressed by War PTSD for Mal), Love and devotion for Serenity Simon - Loyalty & protection (Simon to River, Mal to his crew) Jayne - Mercenary, Pessimistic view of the world (For Mal - Brought on from the war), Justifies doing crime. River - Mental anguish at the hands of the Alliance. Feeling lost. The need to get away from the Alliance. (For Mal - Brought on from the war) Serenity - The ship is the 10th member of the crew. It represents the freedom Mal is seeking.
Like you I like every episode but this one is my favorite. The writing with the 3 different timelines was just so well crafted. A required comment for people reacting to this episode. When the show was cancelled, Alan Tudyk gave Joss Whedon the red button from this episode. Just Mal's negotiation skills at work, like the time he kicked a mercenary into an engine and the next one surprisingly agrees to all of Mal's demands.
One quick word: yes, everyone dies alone. Even if you're surrounded by loved ones, they aren't going with you. They may make it easier for you, but they won't be going with you. Everyone dies alone.
Easily one of my all time favourite episodes of any TV show, ever. Always gets me tearing up at the end when they come back, and when it pans to show Mal looking at Serenity.
The salvagers retreated to wait for Mal to expire from his wounds before returning to Serenity free and clear. (Basically what the Alliance accused Mal of doing in the pilot and Bushwhacked.) By bringing the catalyzer when coming aboard the first time, they could determine the ship's value and status. They could weave a story for the purple bellies that they shot Mal in self defense because he was irrational from hypoxia, walk away with full salvage rights. Multiple witnesses. Getting into a firefight in the cargo bay would cost them in an Alliance inquiry.
This was a critical episode for Firefly to become a cult classic. By flashback, we get the origin of the how the remaining crew joined Serenity which gives a sense of beginning. There are more official (yes, official) stories of the characters origins, and even their final fates after the Serenity film in the comic books and novels that have come out since. If you become a Browncoat (the term for a Firefly fanatic), know that they are out there to find. Dont read them till after the movie, because SPOILERS!
This was my favourite episode by far (not counting the movie), it really fleshed out the characters well, seeing their initial interactions as well as their mid crisis reactions. So good.
If you took a poll of all browncoats to find out what the best single episode of Firefly is I don't think you'd get a majority for any of them, but I think this one would probably get a plurality of the votes. carefree and hippy is much worse than sweet and innocent... you decided that just because Kaylee had sex? I dont think so... she is sweet and innocent. Pretty much oblivious to the evils of world. Pure.
Everyone does die alone. Even if someone else is in the room with you when you die it will still be you alone who dies. That other person won't be dying with you. We must each enter behind the veil by ourself.
I love how funny you think this show is. Humor is one of the things that can really date a show, but this was so well-written, with most of the jokes being character-based that all the jokes still land as they should. (and all the heart-felt moments too - the end of this ep always makes me feel things)
Episodes 8, 9 & 10 is a block of top tier episodes. Just as Safe gave some background/ origin for Simon & River, this one did a great job of doing the same for pretty much everyone else. And yeah, Zoe is excellent at the deadpan humor!
This has got to be the best episode. Remember that engine part mentioned a few episodes ago? During this episode, Gina Torres aka Zoe was off getting married to a certain Morpheus, so they had to film around her, and that is why she was injured at the beginning.
I think its absolutely amazing how Firefly created a full in depth world and full in depth characters just in one season...while most series need multiple seasons to do that... crazy.
Such a Fantastic Way to Wrap Around the Crew coming Together while they Split apart to Work Together as a Family, never gave this Show the Time to Breathe
Serenity even having shuttles is a fluke in her design. She's a Firefly modified into a medical quick response vessel. The shuttles are intended as ambulances. It's the reason she has such a well built trauma bay, built in passenger spaces, and more crew quarters than a Firefly would normally require.
The back stories were fun, and the choppy back and forth in time makes it more tense and more like Mal's experience as he was probably delirious. Also you do realize air is a gas right? In particular the oxygen is running out... or gas.
This episode has a good example (there are others) of how Jayne is a man of action, not words. Or Deeds not words. He don't talk pretty, but instead shows how he feels through actions. Inara could watch over Kaylee, and could earn their keep. They could ho through the front door... Shuttle Two: Wash, Zoe, Simon, River. The obvious part is Zoe needed mending by Simon, and neither would be separated from family. Wash is the best pilot, but Zoe as Mal's first mate would know all of the same black market and Browncoat contacts. She would continue his obligation to protect the Tams, being fugitives and outlaws. Simon would be able to earn his keep in the border and frontier worlds as a country doctor making house calls. River would be the indispensable crew member and the one needing shelter. Once the shuttles launched, the air envelope no longer had to support 9, just one. When the scavenger connected airlocks with Serenity, air pressure was normalized. Mal had full oxygen in the cargo bay while they were connected. It didn't have foul air for the salvagers who visited the cockpit and engine. Once he forced them to leave, the air was no longer circulating and he had to beat the clock before he bled out, instead of hypoxia.
When firefly came out I was living in a cabin in the tobacco root mountains and I missed it, no tv, barely any radio. This episode was my introduction to the series and even that was after the movie came out. As such, it became my favorite episode of my favorite series ever. I could totally be the cook on serenity. I'm a fair cook and I'm handy in a gunfight.
The compression coil was needing replacement in the long pilot... but there wasn't money for it, so it got left ... again. 6 months in this episode since she was keeping it limping on a broken part. Skimping on maintenance is sub-optimal.
Thanks for another grea reaction. I love how this show went back and forth between comedy and drama. This is a lot of people's favorite but I think you can say that about any episode from episode 5 till the end.
'You can't do that to yourself? It can't be done.' Ah but you haven't realized Capt. Mal's superpower yet. He can do whatever needs doing. Usually poorly and not according to whatever his plan was but...
Plus the perfect touch with Wash after Wash completes the job required - Mal then tells Wash to go see to his wife.

“…handy in a gunfight.”
Sure, you are.

Pansy. Seriously, show me your fastball, snowflake.
This is one of my top 3 episodes love the flashback
You have the most infectious laugh! Thanks for another great review.
This and "Objects in Space" are my two favorite episodes♥
"Ya'll gonna be here when I wake up?" 😭😭😭😭😭😭
Mal had to stay on the ship because a ship without any crew is considered abandoned for salvage purposes, and anyone can legally claim it and sell it.
This is the best episode of the series.
I'm surprised no one has told the story about the "Magic button" yet. Lol
'You can't do that to yourself? It can't be done.' Ah but you haven't realized Capt. Mal's superpower yet. He can do whatever needs doing. Usually poorly and not according to whatever his plan was but...
The best episode of Firefly.
Definitely my favorite episode!!!!
my FAVORITE FF EPISODE - Thank you for doing such an epic reaction to this one!!!
this and Ariel are my two favorite episodes. tuff pick since all are fantastic. truly great seeing how the crew came together.
