- The ongoing cost of purchasing commercial pest control products can start to have you wonder if maintaining a garden ADDED costs to your budget instead of REDUCING costs. How do I know, because I've been there, but for the past 5 years, my garden has thrived off of minimal and mostly free inputs that make maintaining a healthy, productive, largely pest free garden a breeze. In this video, I'll share a list of how what crops you plant can work to keep pests at bay 24/7 so that you can enjoy the fruits of your labor. I ordered one, and I can't wait for it to get here. ❤ Thank you
@@BecomingaFarmGirl I thought I was done. Then they came out with the Blueberry color. Trying to figure out how to work that into the budget. Sigh.
Have this months grocery guide gone out yet? I haven’t received it yet.
I never got June’s or July’s email for grocery list and recipes. Are you no longer doing those? I have tried to email and made comments, but haven’t heard back yet.
I'm guessing my Green Stalk is old... I got it back in 2020 during the pandemic and it has wheels, but no spinner... Also the new ones seems bigger...
I haven't been using it lately, but this video is inspiring me to start gardening again... I definitely would like to grow herbs, tomatoes and pepper since they are the easiest to maintain... Thanks for sharing 🤗
I am now up to 13 Greenstalks. With my severe back issues, these planters are a way I can still continue growing food and flowers without pain. These planters are the best on the market and a great investment.
Hi Brenda! I hear you on this one. This summer has been eye opening for me on realizing the importance of having 'gardening infrastructure' because I have a tiny in ground garden on a friends property and let me tell you, its' night and day in terms of the level of care, pest pressure, tools and supports you need to grow productively in ground. Growing in a GreenStalk isn't just something I'm doing because I don't have land, because I also intend to keep using them when I do. Gardening can be very taxing on your body if you've already got muscle soreness or injuries and the heat only compounds things. Nothing beats having a movable garden right outside of your front or back door. Your 13 planters allows you to grow more food, in less space, with a faster water and fertilizing routine, easier harvesting and planting than folks with acreage. Goodness-I know the abundance I have with 5, so to have 13 that's a small farm lady! This is encouraging!
Perfect timing for me. I have ordered my first GreenStalk and am waiting for it to arrive. So happy you have posted this beginner lesson with your dad. He and I are close to the same age and I share many of his concerns about the struggle of gardening. I feel more confident in my vertical gardening abilities after your highly informative lesson.
Woot, woot! Congrats on your GreenStalk garden! Keep me posted on your progress! My dad has really enjoyed his GreenStalk and he wants a second one in the fall to grow herbs and leafy greens!
Came across one of your videos maybe less than 2 weeks ago and BAM I just received my first garden PLUS the company was having their 10 year sale so my bundle was reduced👍🏽 perfect timing or divine intervention!!
Hello friend! Aww, I'm so happy to hear this! You are going to love your GreenStalk garden-keep me posted!
I’ve got rosemary, lemon balm, lavender, chives, mint all up in my garden and I still get bit from the mosquitoes around 6pm. Last month I had 31 bites!
That’s me too. Mosquitos look at me coming outside and tell there friends “There she go right there” and it’s buffet time. I try to be sour but it’s not working😂
Love that you did this with your dad!!
Hi Dad 👋🏻 you’re spoiling us with family videos. And you know we love Dad!
When dad said first, I knew he was going to get more.
And ALL this time he and mom initially looked at me crazy when I went from 1 to 3 GreenStalks but now, NOW he gets it! His garden is doing so well and this fall he said he wants to set up a second one full of herbs and leafy greens!
The GS can be expensive. GS is having a sale through 7/10 or 11 and paired with Becoming a farmgirl discount code, it may be affordable 🌻
Oh thank you friend for mentioning this! Yes, I ALWAYS wait for a sale (they have them nearly every other month--either a BOGO or nearly 1/2 off) and that's when I encourage folks to grab one. Appreciate you, sweet friend!
I got my first greenstalk this year, too! Go, Dad!!
Because of your channel, I bought my first GreenStalk a month ago. I just bought my second one on the 4th of July. 😊
Lol I feel like he just did a commercial for them. That is great feedback & it makes me want to put in my order.
I get my worm castings from a local vermicompost company in my state.
I'm lucky to have a huge composting tumbler that was my mom's. It makes composting so easy.
You have a great daughter sir...she has inspired me to buy two of the verticals and I can't wait to get them going...and you must be very smart and wise...you and your Wife...because you have a wonderful and energetic daughter who is a great instructor...I love her videos...and the worm casting has two benefits for me...I live off an old golf course in NC and have a large pond full of fish...so worms...fish...and pond...and poles...well you get the picture...
Those extra goodies are extra awesome, especially the garden stickers 👩🏿🌾 I'm gonna break down and grab myself a greenstalk for my small space, TFS, your pest relief tips!
Hello friend! Always good to see you. GreenStalk hosts sales (BOGO or nearly 50% off nearly every other month so if you can, wait to pair your purchase and the coupon code so that you can get a planter for just $97 or two for $150! It's nuts!
I am one of your new subscribers. I just wanna thank you for coming across your videos. You were the first gardener that had me start my very first garden with GreenStalk. I even use your code on my first purchase. Thank you so much I’ve been loving and enjoying my garden experience thru you and few other amazing RUclips gardeners.
This is such a sweet video! I just love that your dad is taking an interest and you were able to help him!
Wow!! If Dad wouldn't have stated his age I never would have guessed it. Greenstalk looks great on the porch. I love my greenstalk. I will be getting more. Thanks
I would love to see a follow-up video in a few weeks to see how your dad's greenstalk is doing! He's wonderful. Thank you for sharing. I hope he gets more greenstalks.
Oh this is wonderful friend! I'm so happy you're enjoying being a GreenStalk grower too!
So excited to be #5 , I've never been in single digits for the channels I follow
Hi Tammy! Lucky number 5 you are! Hope your garden is doing well in this summer heat! Thanks for joining me today!
@@BecomingaFarmGirl ALWAYS , I love your Christian heart and always learn something
Love seeing you and your dad build and fill his Greenstalk together. I live in south FL and the heat/bug pressure have ruined my garden in the past 30 days. I might have to get a greenstalk for my screened patio too. ❤💚
Glad to see your dad getting a greenstalk. I bought 2 last year. I planted a mixture last year. One is now for my strawberries. The other has a mixture of herbs and lettuce. I love the ideal of not having to bend over so - back issues here. I still have a little bit in the ground as well.
I have thought about putting strawberries in mine as well, but I have been hesitant. Is this working well for you?
Hello friend! You cannot beat the volume of what you can grow with the ease of how to grow it by using a GreenStalk. I have a small garden plot on a friends farm this year and the care between my two gardens is night and day. Glad to hear that a GreenStalk has been a. compliment to your existing garden!
@peanutf8235 It was my first year, and I had only used the top 3. I got a few berries. The runners are going crazy, so I put them in small pots til they are rooted, then I am filling the rest of the greensalk. These were plants that I got out of my previous garden (the rest got eaten down by a deer.)
I started out with other items in the bottom tier, but replanted them so that the one is for just strawberries. I liked just going out and getting a handful to snack on.
Ok you convinced me to invest in this product. Seeing your dad getting involved in the process of raising and caring for plants was a huge seller for me! Can’t wait to get them and get started! By the way, have you done any fall crops in your greenstalk and if so, can you please consider making a video on fall planting? Thank you as always for your awesome videos. I started a notebook with all your advice and tips!
A GREAT PRESENTATION DAD.
Great post! You look just like your Dad!
Haha, I'm starting to get this comment a lot more in the comments section. Early on I didn't see it, but now I think I do!
Your timing is great! I needed a bit more space for rotating harvests for our salads. Its my third at this point. Got a blue one (so pretty) and used your discount. Thank you for that . Plus you come out with a good guide for keeping the mosquitoes at bay ! Just in time for me to grab a few of those plants before it gets here. They are feracious around here. So I will pop those anti-bug plants in my extra pockets. Good to see Thor snuffling about, he was probably ecstatic. Not only did he have dirt to smell he also had his buddy (your dad) to tell all about it.😃
Love this video. I also live in Florida. I have 3 green stalks I have them on my driveway. Love the tips for anti bug plants.
They are addictive! You always ‘need’ a couple more. 😊
Soo addictive! My husband says that luckily I ran out of space so we can't have any more (but there's always the front porch!)
I love your family so much much. I have one green stalk I've had for 5 years now. I'm going to get another one for next year
Aww, sweet friend you are too kind! My dad was too tickled to have a GreenStalk on his back porch. He's doing such a good job of maintaining it too, so happy for them!
Tiny grasshoppers chewed my basil, bush green beans and dahlias to shreds this year. They don't bother my romaine lettuce, the squashes or tomatoes and they weren't especially fond of the sage, rosemary or lavender. They did actually chew my marigolds to pieces.
You are so great at all this stuff, and I am learning so much! I know food shortages are coming our way, and you are part of my preparation process. Thank you so much!
How wonderful. Dad will be the Southern Representative for GreenStalk. Wow that Florida sunshine and ideal temperatures boosted Dad's flower and food production.
Thanks Cassandra take care and have a wonderful week.
Another awesome video!
Your Dad is a natural influencer.
This made me chuckle, because he totally speaks off the cuff and after I finished recording him, I was like, whoa dad! He said that even though its his first GreenStalk, he's gotten very used to them just by being at my place and watching how I've finally been able to grow a lot of food in a small space these past few years. He always wanted to show the planters in a different light because his garden truly is more for pests rather than food production. He will love seeing this comment!
Great video!!! Please let your dad know, they are having a really great deal on the green stalks. I brought my cousin one for 97 dollars.
Hi friend! Thanks for sharing. That's another thing I enjoy about GreenStalk-they host sales pretty frequently, and as you have mentioned that's when I tell folks to buy! You can beat an out of the box garden for 97 bucks!
Thanks!
Got everything except the stickers with my greenstalk. Love my greenstalk
Love it! Thank you!!!
You are so welcome! Happy gardening!
Hi I love the video, great information as always. Thank you
Thanks for sharing. Looks like your dad enjoyed setting this up.
He really truly did and I was so happy to see this. He hasn't been in the garden since he was a boy in his grandmother's garden and didn't see himself getting back into gardening in that way. He couldn't believe how fast the set up was and how easy its been to water/maintain.
I love my greenstalks. I have used your code several times. I especially love the new growing guide you shared in one of your videos a few weeks ago. I would also really recommend it!
Awww, thank you so much friend! I really appreciate your kind words and the mention that you used my coupon code! :)
I garden in raised beds so I'm not sure if this applies but I've noticed over the years that if I keep a bug net over my seedlings for a few weeks until the roots really get established then I typically don't have any pest issues later unless I run into a nutrient deficiency or mess up on watering. As long as they have what they need my veggies seem to naturally keep pests away after they are mature enough when I grow them close together. I use heirloom seeds and my beds are surrounded by lawn (I don't use pesticides or herbicides on either the lawn or my garden or anywhere). I'm not sure how they do it, special scents, infrasound, something visual? It's been true for a decade now though, it's like once they establish a small biome they somehow control what get's in.
Except in Florida 😆I have found slugs and snails at the top of our screens. Our bugs are world class eaters. They get the veggies AND herbs before we can. 🤣 Plant garlic to repel the squirrels. HA, ours wait for the bulbs to just begin forming, and pluck them out of the ground and snack away!
😂 sounds a bit similar to Alabama/Georgia
Oh garlic is a wonderful addition for pest repellent. Thank you for mentioning this one!
@@mrsmc2612 They don't know, do they? 😂
I have 4 mostly planted with strawberries I loved them.
Oh a strawberry tower sounds wonderful!
Hey there!😊
Hey hey! Thanks for stopping by the garden!

An inspiring video, I think my mom would appreciate a planter like this. Q: are there similar alternatives for urban apartment dwellers?
We have three green stalks and keep ours in a high tunnel. We’re very happy with them.
Oh I love the idea of keeping it in a high tunnel!!!
@@BecomingaFarmGirl . I’m new to your channel and love your videos. It is hot in NH so it’s the perfect time to binge watch my new favorite channel.
here!
Hello friend! Thanks for stopping by the garden!
Lmbo😅, I just ordered my new!! T Y.👑
Woot! Woot! Congrats! Keep me posted on your progress! :)
Hey Cass been watching your videos for a while now 😊 love every bit of advice and cooking videos 💖 . Hi from South Africa 🇿🇦
Hello friend! Aww, thank you so much. I feel the love and send it right back your way. Whoa...I have friends in South Africa?! How awesome!!!
Hey dad 😊
Thanks for this video! What’s the difference between the Greenstalks and similar vertical planters on Amazon?
Thanks for the video.
The "Greenstalk" looks really interesting. I think if I were to use something like this, I would like to see it for tomatoes, but I am not sure if the Pots it has are big enough?
My indeterminate tomatoes grow like weeds planted at the top level. They fall like a waterfall over the rest of the levels. I planted shade loving lettuce and kale down that side and they are all thriving together. Would suggest getting at least one of their plant support rings to hold it out and away a little, I have one on order myself from the 10 yr anniversary sale they have going right now.
❤
Can you show me how make a fall Garden for the fall in winter
Thanks for the plant guide. I was wondering. What is the little round device on the top tier of your dad’s planter? Is it an electric moisture meter?
Volume is so low I have to hold the phone to my ear to hear you!! It's not my phone volume. I have it turned all the way up!!! Does U Tube mess with the volume on certain programs?? Commercials are LOUD and proud but some programs are so hard to hear I sometimes just give up. I love your program.
The volume is good on my end
Sometimes its youtube and sometimes its me! I worked hard to stabilize the volume on this video. I'm so sorry--I know that makes watching frustrating
I wish they'd bring the black green stock back.. 🙏🤞🇨🇦
She was a beauty for sure! And the brown---I haven't seen that color in a minute! I'm maxed out on GreenStalks but if I could get one more I think it would be the red color that is featured from time to time!
@@BecomingaFarmGirl Oh .
I haven't seen the red .
I guess I'm boring.. lol
I just like everything simple and have all my pots the same colour.. To me it's calming to my eyes.. The eyes go to the plant and not the pot.. But that's just me.. My garden is all in pots or tubs . I'm in an apartment building but in the country. So it's on the edge of the parking lot.. Everyone says they enjoy it . I wish I could show you pictures.. I enjoy your videos.. take care. 😊🇨🇦😄.
Girl, I bought the greenstalk planter, huge waste of money. Bc it's plastic it gets hot roots and watering is a pain. Half the plants don't get enough water.
💜💜💜💜💜
I downloaded your planter crop guide but was curious why it shows flowers in the top water reservoir. Am i seeing that correctly? Beautiful graphics btw!
I believe in Warren castings too. I tried to build one once and it just got inundated with fruit flies. What was the one you were using? I’m looking for a good worm compost making factory but I can’t seem to find one. Thank you
❤❤😊😊
One of these days, I'll break down and do it. It just feels silly and like a waste of money with me sitting on acreage.
Hi Trista! Always good to see you. The most important thing is to grow food, but how you do it is up to you and a Greenstalk may not be what you choose and thats ok! I think its a combination of a person's previous gardening experience, house layout, the degree of infastructure you want to expedite or ease gardening chores such as watering, harvesting, etc. Since I'm most familiar with container/vertical growing that's what I stick too but eventually, when I get some land like you, I'll have a few raised beds!
Do you have problems with worms escaping the worm bin indoors? Being in Florida the worms will die outside in our heat.
Does the insect protection cover prevent pollinators from entering the garden?
Amen! I'm not doing rosemary this year, but the marigolds & citronella are smelling amazing.
Those insect covers look almost opaque. How does the rain and the sun get to the plants?
They are great, obviously so expensive unfortunately. Love the system dream of having these to help my rabbits their poop helps the soil then share with the local domestic violence charity the food to help....see so many possibilities for that. I can't really grow in the ground where I'm renting because they spray on the lawn those would be great to wheel into the garage when they come to protect the food.
Love the product wish I could test it out for myself.
Thanks for sharing.
They are having a sale n u can also use Cassandra's code to get it for under 100
Hello friend! You have such a good-hearted premise for gardening and I know it'll come to pass one day. About once a quarter GreenStalk has major sales (like buy one get one half off, or almost nearly 1/2 off and this is when I have always purchased mine so that I never have paid full price :)
My Green stalk is 2nd year. I refreshed it and now i cannot get the layers to line up. What a nightmare!!! So it fell over.
I've never gardened in my life and have struggled to keep house plants alive. Needless to say, I'm hesitant to start a garden. Is it possible to have a greenstalk and ONLY put veggies in it? I'm really not a flower person (I can honestly take them or leave them) and many strongly scented flowers just make me sneeze adn give me headaches. But I'd love to grow some of my own veggies -- like a big salad on my patio (I'd be interested in lettuce, tomatoes, carrots, green beans... maybe a pepper plant). Is that something that can be done in a greenstalk without doing any flowers?
How do you strat a 🪱 bed?
I have 2 rotary composters that I got from Aldi's. One has been cooking for over 2 years and still hasn't broken down enough to use. I am thinking of switching to worms. How do you winter them over? I don't have much garage space and can't keep them in the house. I am in Missouri, so we have freezing cold. Can they be kept outside?
Hi Cassandra and BAFG family. I am taking my advice and getting another GS. I already have the original and was marginally successful. My question to all that have both tyoes, which do you prefer?
Hi friend! Good question and you know what-I'd say the answer to that depends on what you enjoy growing and harvesting most. If you're mainly a fruits and veggies or food grower, stick with the original greenstalk so that you have deeper planter pockets. BUT if you enjoy growing things that have shallow roots (like herbs and some flowers) the leaf planter is perfect because you can grow more given the shorter pocket length. I have a combination of both because I love, love, LOVE cooking with fresh herbs throughout the growing season (basil, thyme, rosemary, oregano, stevia, lemon balm, mints). I make my own medicinal tinctures, infused oils, and dehydrate for teas. I also love growing compact crops so I have the original planters to. Let your goal for gardening determine which planter makes sense for you. That's my two cents, but I'd also love to hear what others share!
@BecomingaFarmGirl Thanks for your 2cents😉 I went with the leaf GS since I already have the original. I will grow herbs for myself and my chickens. I have in-ground gardens as well, but I love the versatility of having so many ways to grow food💚
Hi Cassandra! I've been trying to purchase your worm farming course for a while, but it won't let me due to "test mode" or something. Is enrollment still open? Thank you!
How do ou stop the birds from eating your beans and peas? Honestly I just can’t eat them after they take bites off of them?
Do you recommend the 5 tier or the 7 tier. I want to order but am stuck on which one is best. I don't want to make a mistake and get one of each if one is better than the other. I know I am leaning towards the 5 tier because they are deeper. Thank you

@@BecomingaFarmGirl thank you I had no idea about the deep and smaller pockets and what grew in what will get some of each thank you
Girl I lost ALL of my kale to devil worms. I have basil marigolds and peppers planted throughout. The worms said thank you but those 15 worms won’t say it again ☠️
Great vlog and I love your narration, but It's funny that the directions are read out loud, but you still didn't FILL each level to the top, as instructed. The natural compaction will bring the level much lower, and you will have to top off sooner the way you did it.....just a thought
Be careful with those Green Stalk planters-they're addictive, especially when they are on sale. My first Green Stalk is in it's fourth summer. Stays outside in southern York County Pennsylvania winters and is not showing any degradation at all. These planters are excellent quality.
Somebody is playing games because I know I have been a subscriber but for some reason YT is showing that I’m not subscribed.
I ordered my first Greenstalk in May on sale. I just placed my second order a few days ago….that’s right on sale, and I used your code. You ROCK! Keep being you, and sharing all you do with the world. I need to deter flies, and mosquitoes. I love your Dad’s new Greenstalk garden.😊🫶🏽
