    I recently purchased the 9.9 for my Zodiac Style Inflatable. during break it had the GPS on and saw 17+ MPH once on plane and at 3/4 throttle, thoroughly impressed as I had light gear and my wife and I in the boat. Starts easy, runs quiet, trolls down to a crawl, loved it.

    had a 12 foot sears aluminum V jon boat with a 9.9, had one back in the 90S, it will haul azz. ez on the gas get you in real skinny water. All around great fun and scout out boat for future kayaking trips and the flats boat with friends. The lake I fish in NW Florida has a lot of stumps and so I witched the prop on my flats boat because if the prop hits a stomp it might absorb some of the energy when it deforms and breaks and spare other parts in the lower unit and motor. So I keep the spare SS one on board stored away and probably will have an extra on the john boat too.

    I live in Hawaii on Kaneohe bay, right on the
    ocean. I like my 9,9 be cause I can lift it up over my 5 foot sea wall or down to attach to my 10.8 Bris inflatable. I also like it because you can lift the prop to just under the water for traversing over very shallow reefs going virtually where no one else can. Also you can squeeze more horsepower out of it via aftermarket goodies like performance propellor and carburetor. I would also recommend the Mercruiser planer- Ya might lose a little speed but you will get to plane a LOT faster. Very happy with mine- Aloha from Hawaii!

    1 year later have (got it a while back) 12 sear V jon boat (reminisce) 1990's South Biscayne Bay N. Key Largo, but a little too small or? I got a little bigger. So got really gently used AlumaCraft 14 with a V jon boat and a........... 9.9 4 stroke Merc. Have not used it much, just got it and finishing set up but it is NICE. Quite, fast enough and fact is maybe more in salt water sometimes going slow is golden, you can tune in more. In skinny waters there are some subtleties that can only be appreciated slow and quite. I very often go up current and cut her off and drift back silently with the only noise (wake up the hood) being a skitter walk top water fast and loud first time and slow and gentle the second time. Have a 16.5 Redfisher with a 90 Yamh. but the jon boat is so capable ez to tow quite and skinny, just a fun toy and the 9.9 Merc is a big part of that, and the economy is just the icing on the cake.

    To the best of my knowledge, it’s not just the carburettor you need to change (9.9 hp to a 15hp) you need to change the size of the air intake and I think one or two other things. You need to check with your mechanic. Great video, thanks.

    I have a 2021, mercury 9.9 that has 60 hours on it. I have it on a 12 foot lowe johnboat with some decking and a Remote control, trolling motor mounted on the front. I can do 22 mph with this set up. I love the gas consumption and I love trolling with this motor. The one thing I don’t like about this motor is that I find that it does not start as quickly as I would like. It usually takes me about three pulls with the choke pulled out, and sometimes with the idle increased. I really wish it started on the first pull. It also seems to idle very slowly, although it usually does not die out. I have found that I fly habit at full throttle, going down the lake, and then stop and put it in neutral, it will often die out. Other than that, I love this motor, and I’m so pleased that I was able to get a new motor rather than a mess with an old used one.

    Speed and weather is not a factor. Speed is for tournament guys. Can't get GT500 performance out of a Versa. Look at the weather channel when you plan your trip. I'm running a 5 up and it's better than a trolling motor which is better than padding which is better than drifting. Plus, the reservoir in my town has a 5hp max.

      @kaavest Год назад

      Yes EFI is good and i got one EFI tohatsu 3 cyl 25hp in 12 years before i moved into a plase with a shallow vater channel and so on so no on a 9,8 carbureator new engine and boat. It,s no problem to use this application but you have to beware a little bit on choce if cold start and push it in. This take 2 seconds and if a trip las a hour i dont concider it a problem. But EFI is better in some ways and i think sooner or later they come in EFI. One thing is that a carbureator is primitive and reliable if yoy are vigilant on clean fuel. Then they last forever.

    I have a 2020 14' alumni craft jon boat with a 2021 9.9 mercury four stroke. I too went from a 22.2' aquasport flatly 150hp mariner to this little boat. I fish any creek or river I want and also run real skinny water here in Gulf of Florida Westcoast. The biggest pro that comes to mind besides the fuel economy would be how quiet this little workhorse is. I love the electric start but when my trolling motor runs my single battery down, it's no problem. Just a short tug on the recoil and it's running. The only con is the tilt/trailer locking mechanism, it could have been designed better. Putting it in gear to unlock it I don't like. They could have just added another lock/unlock lever on the front of motor. Although I do like the tensioner lever to tighten steering. It works good when trailering. Motor stays put. My next mod may be a small helm so I can operate the vessel without reaching back. Ouch on my back and neck after an extended amount of time.

    I have a 2019 9.9hp mercury, I bought the upgraded carb and seen no difference in speed. I have been searching for a stainless steel prop but no one makes one for these motors. I found out that the older mercury models will benifit from a 15hp carb but not the newer 4 strokes.

      I’m having issue with the carburetor and I have taken it the the shop for the warranty they keep replacing for new carburetor x2 but I just keep having the same issue Over and over so I was thinking upgrading. I’m wondering if I’ll get more boat time or shop time? But I’ll be losing my warranty. I just want fish more off the boat!

    I hate it like I never hate before. One day it start, the other it doesn't. I am a trapper. I had a Yamaha for years. Always starts. One year winter get here faster and it frozen and broke the feet. I bought that Mercury 9.9 Never pull that cord that much of my life. It can start fine. You go install a trap at the end of the lake and BANG. That thing don't start anymore. I can just go in the deepest part of the lake and let it sink. I just can't afford the $$$ lost.

    U wanna talk about low maintenance...my old 2 stroke outboard I run on my 12 foot jon boat is a 1947 scott Attwater 3.6 hp and all I gotta do is make sure there's oil in the gas and go....it always starts in 3 pulls or less...and never let's me down....heck it's so old they used grease in the lower unit instead of oil.....so every 10 years or so u pump 3 or 4 pumps of grease in it and you are good to go

      @@DudeLetsFish only things about that old outboard I would say are cons..are the fact that it's 2 stroke so sometimes in the cold u have to do some tuning on the low jet and high jet in the carb while ur running down the lake....luckily they put nice easy to reach knows on the them so they are easily tuned on the fly....and being a 3.6 hp with my and my buddy at bother a solid 250 lbs and all are tackle the ol girl WOT only pushes that 12 foots like 7 to 8 mph

    Your boat is way to big for a 9.9hp I have a 9.9 on my 12ft semi vhull and I fly I'd say somewhere between 20-25mph. I prefer the 9.9hp 4-stroke vs the 15hp 2-stroke I previously had because it's way quieter and better on gas; and to be honest the speed difference is negligible. There's also a carb upgrade you can get for these that effectively makes them 15hp anyway although I haven't done it personally.. Yet.
