His last film role was in "The Shootist"(1976). He won his first and only Academy Award for playing Rooster Cogburn in "True Grit"(1969).He won for Best Actor.
My lovely wife is buried at Pacific View Cemetery. I go there every week with fresh flowers and I do a prayer walk around the entire perimeter of the Cemetery. The girl who died tragically while speeding in a Porsche was Nikki Catsouras. I always pass Nikki's grave on my prayer walk. And very close to Nikki is the crypt of a famous actress that you didn't notice: Jeanne Carmen, Known as the queen of the B movies, a personal friend of Marilyn Monroe, a mistress of Frank Sinatra and Johnny Rosselli, and she was also a trick golfer.
My dad’s cousin was married to John Wayne’s daughter. Jennifer Wayne, the granddaughter of John Wayne is a country music singer. She’s a member of Runaway June.
Thank you for doing this one, Pilgrim! You are one for those of us who will never get to visit these places. Stay safe out there brother, and God bless!
My brother and I travelled from Antrim/Belfast in Northern Ireland just to visit the grave. Although at the time you had to hunt for it, as the family still insisted that the office staff should not point in which direction. However after begging the lady office worker and explaining how far we had travelled she didn't tell me the exact location , but did point me in the right direction. Whist approaching the grave, we had noticed a visitor, so we stood back. It was his daughter Marisa.. When she got into their car we slowly approached. Marisa waved. It was a day I cannot and will not forget. I am the fan and admirer. Why! Whilst in London in the making of the movie Brannigan, I had the opportunity to say hello, I was Private Chauffeur/ Driver at the time. I thank Mr Wayne for the memories and movie entertainment through all the years until now 2024. Huge collection (not cheap tack) and had a huge window engraved/sand blasted. R.I.P Mr Wayne. Thank you for the memories. (Ireland)
The movie he played a "cancer stricken gunslinger" his last role, was The Shootist. The movie he played Rooster Cogburn, with the eyepatch was True Grit.
He is so revered in my family, that I have his last movie, still wrapped in plastic, never opened because no family member, past or present can bring ourselves to watch it. When he passed it was devastating! The Best... RIP JW.
The Shootist, such a great movie, i was born and raised and still live in Indiana Pa which is Jimmy Stewarts hometown. Jimmy is huge around here, his childhood home is like a museum and they have a separate museum that has Jimmys office exactly like it was in Hollywood and they have a bunch of props from his movies. John Wayne and Jimmy Stewart 2 of the best to ever act
Actually, John Wayne's final film was The Shootist (1976). Wayne had been diagnosed with stomach cancer and would pass away about three years later. Wayne was rather controversial at times, so his grave remained unmarked for nearly two decades, because his surviving family was afraid that his grave would be desecrated.
@@Rizzbulla Wayne was known for making patronizing remarks about blacks (and other POC). While it wasn't outright racism, Wayne did state during a Playboy interview that he didn't think blacks were ready to rule themselves. There was also controversy over his "refusal" to serve in the armed forces during WW2. Wayne was the father of four children at the time and his family might have suffered severe financial hardship if he were indeed KIA or went MIA. Thanks.
Hey Lamont! The last film role, which you described rather accurately, was The Shootist. True Grit was 1969 for which he won an Oscar. Keep up the great work my man!
That was a great movie. But, then again, every film he did with Maureen O'Hara was a winner. My absolute favorite is 'McClintock', I could watch that over and over. They seemed to have such a good chemistry together.
Great looking guy in his younger years. Very magnetic - look into his eyes. Big, big life, and now here he lies, quiet and still, beneath a plaque shoulder to shoulder with others that he probably didn't know.
Thanks Lamont for sharing this with us. I was a John Wayne fan I loved watching his movies. I didn’t know that he was buried in a common grave I always thought he was in a mausoleum.
great video. His last movie I believe was the Shootist with Lauren Bacall and James Stewart. He also appeared as himself on a hilarious episode of 'Maude'.
Read about the movie, the Conqueror. It was filmed near a nuclear testing site and 220 set member developed cancer with 42 dying. John Wayne and Susan Hayward included
Dick Powell who directed the movie died of cancer. Agnes Moorhead ( Endora from Bewitched) also died from cancer. Lee Van Cleef was also in it. His cause of death has been listed as heart disease but he was also battling throat cancer. So yeah a lot of people were exposed to that radiation.
My late father used to watch John Wayne movies a lot I knew who he was but not really my thing. your eyes look extra gorgeous today Lamont! Take care love from the UK x
My Dad was a big fan of his/his movies. I liked his toughness/no nonsense, etc. but not a big western fan. If I had to watch one I'm guessing it would be his I liked, but never seen any of his movies. I don't know how but never seen any YT vids on him until now, never seen his grave! I really like his headstone, very nice. Thank you as always Lamont, love you! 💕💕
Great video Lamont 👩🏻🏫👏🏻🥰‼️ I’m a fan of John Wayne. Have been for a while. Three of my favorite John Wayne movies are “Fort Apache”, “She Wore a Yellow Ribbon” and “Rio Grande”.
This my friend, is very GROUNDING - tomorrow is the very most important thing, and then it is no longer. Fact of living is the end of living, dying is part of living. I appreciate every story. I loved that movie! Remember "McClintock" and "Hitari" ? Great comedy!😅
The Quiet Man, my Mom and I favorite movie of his. Maureen O'hara was beautiful and feisty!
As famous as John Wayne was, he has such an unassuming grave. Thanks for the video, Lamont.
I miss these cemetery video's, so thank you ❤

Amazing such a simple market for such a famous actor RIP John Wayne another great story Lamont!❤
I expected a much larger monument since he was larger than life!! He was the ultimate Cowboy for me.
Like Frank Sinatra, John Wayne is laid to rest among the common folks.
That's how it is at Hollywood Forever Cemetery, a lot of movies stars are interned with the common folks
Or is it interred? 🤔
Death is the great equalizer as they say!
@saltrisha1 NOT really, the cemeteries were legally segregated in the South. Go figure. 🤔
As always Lamont we appreciate your time and grate effort into making this video happen.
A great video,my Dad John Parsons liked John Wayne's movies, loved westerns.
Watching from Ireland where John Wayne appeared in the film The Quiet Man may he rest in peace with his family
That was a great movie. But, then again, every film he did with Maureen O'Hara was a winner. My absolute favorite is 'McClintock', I could watch that over and over. They seemed to have such a good chemistry together.
His children and grandchildren are still alive
I'm surprised that his headstone wasn't bigger and nicer for it to stand out.
It’s humbling to see such a person under a stone marker in 6 feet of ground. In the end we are all equal huh.
Mr. Wayne you brought your fans so much joy
Always liked him in movies 😊Thank you for sharing with us take care 🙂
My dad was a huge fan of John Wayne back in the day. Love the baby picture of him. He had a big head lol.

True Grit was not his last movie. His last movie was The Shootist made in 1975
"Rooster Cogburn" was his next to last movie. It was the sequel to "True Grit". It came out in '75. "The Shootist" was the following year.
1976.

Harry Morgan, John Carradine, Scatman Crothers & Ron Howard were in that flick as well.
