His last film role was in "The Shootist"(1976). He won his first and only Academy Award for playing Rooster Cogburn in "True Grit"(1969).He won for Best Actor.
His voice is actually in Star wars a new hope, they used the voice for an alien

John Wayne is one of my favorite actors!!! RIP John Wayne, Kobe and Gigi Bryant
My dad was obsessed with John Wayne....even dressed up as cowboy when a lad, watched all the western movies😂bless him, all the oldies
My lovely wife is buried at Pacific View Cemetery. I go there every week with fresh flowers and I do a prayer walk around the entire perimeter of the Cemetery.
The girl who died tragically while speeding in a Porsche was Nikki Catsouras. I always pass Nikki's grave on my prayer walk.
And very close to Nikki is the crypt of a famous actress that you didn't notice:
Jeanne Carmen,
Known as the queen of the B movies, a personal friend of Marilyn Monroe, a mistress of Frank Sinatra and Johnny Rosselli, and she was also a trick golfer.
You're a sweetheart for remembering your wife. Thank you for the other info as well. ❤
Wonderful comment bless you thank you
RIP 🪦 🕊️ The Quiet Man
I loved that movie! Remember "McClintock" and "Hitari" ? Great comedy!😅
The Quiet Man, my Mom and I favorite movie of his. Maureen O'hara was beautiful and feisty!
My dad’s cousin was married to John Wayne’s daughter. Jennifer Wayne, the granddaughter of John Wayne is a country music singer. She’s a member of Runaway June.
Grew up watching western movies n TV shows...loved the Duke, RIP John Wayne ❤😢. Thank you Lamont
Guess u hvnt seen allhis sites...nieve lol
His movies were terrific they tried to remake True Grit it was a disgrace and terrible way to Dishonor the duke no actor well fill his shoes today
Actually, John Wayne's final film was The Shootist (1976). Wayne had been diagnosed with stomach cancer and would pass away about three years later. Wayne was rather controversial at times, so his grave remained unmarked for nearly two decades, because his surviving family was afraid that his grave would be desecrated.
John Wayne rest in peace make God blessed 🙏
Controversial how?
@@Rizzbulla Wayne was known for making patronizing remarks about blacks (and other POC). While it wasn't outright racism, Wayne did state during a Playboy interview that he didn't think blacks were ready to rule themselves. There was also controversy over his "refusal" to serve in the armed forces during WW2. Wayne was the father of four children at the time and his family might have suffered severe financial hardship if he were indeed KIA or went MIA. Thanks.
@@jamesrau100
Thanks for the information, I appreciate it.
@@jamesrau100good info John Wayne I love his acting my idle TFS
The movie he played a "cancer stricken gunslinger" his last role, was The Shootist. The movie he played Rooster Cogburn, with the eyepatch was True Grit.
Life is tough. It’s even tougher when you’re stupid. The Duke
💯
😂😂😂 yep. So true!
Hahahaha!
Thank you for doing this one, Pilgrim! You are one for those of us who will never get to visit these places. Stay safe out there brother, and God bless!
Like Frank Sinatra, John Wayne is laid to rest among the common folks.
That's how it is at Hollywood Forever Cemetery, a lot of movies stars are interned with the common folks
Or is it interred? 🤔
Death is the great equalizer as they say!
I loved the quiet man and Mcclintok!
As famous as John Wayne was, he has such an unassuming grave. Thanks for the video, Lamont.
The Shootist was John’s last movie.
Hey Lamont! The last film role, which you described rather accurately, was The Shootist. True Grit was 1969 for which he won an Oscar.
Keep up the great work my man!
He is so revered in my family, that I have his last movie, still wrapped in plastic, never opened because no family member, past or present can bring ourselves to watch it. When he passed it was devastating! The Best... RIP JW.
Same! My family especially my dad absolutely adored that man. I grew up watching all those old westerns with my dad. Great stuff
Streaming service??
The Shootist, such a great movie, i was born and raised and still live in Indiana Pa which is Jimmy Stewarts hometown. Jimmy is huge around here, his childhood home is like a museum and they have a separate museum that has Jimmys office exactly like it was in Hollywood and they have a bunch of props from his movies. John Wayne and Jimmy Stewart 2 of the best to ever act
During world war 2 his movies got the usa thru the war. I thought his middle name was michael.
@@CarolineWessonFLGirl
Me too, watched westerns with my Dad. Westerns were the best back in the day. Still watch re-runs.
Duke is and always will be my Hero grew up watching him .Duke could definitely set on a horse 🐎🐎🐎🐎🐎
I miss these cemetery video's, so thank you ❤
True Grit was not his last movie. His last movie was The Shootist made in 1975
"Rooster Cogburn" was his next to last movie. It was the sequel to "True Grit". It came out in '75. "The Shootist" was the following year.
1976.
It’s humbling to see such a person under a stone marker in 6 feet of ground. In the end we are all equal huh.
I THOUGHT THE SHOOTIST WAS HIS LAST MOVIE
I expected a much larger monument since he was larger than life!! He was the ultimate Cowboy for me.
Watching from Ireland where John Wayne appeared in the film The Quiet Man may he rest in peace with his family
That was a great movie. But, then again, every film he did with Maureen O'Hara was a winner. My absolute favorite is 'McClintock', I could watch that over and over. They seemed to have such a good chemistry together.
His children and grandchildren are still alive
My brother and I travelled from Antrim/Belfast in Northern Ireland just to visit the grave. Although at the time you had to hunt for it, as the family still insisted that the office staff should not point in which direction. However after begging the lady office worker and explaining how far we had travelled she didn't tell me the exact location , but did point me in the right direction. Whist approaching the grave, we had noticed a visitor, so we stood back.
It was his daughter Marisa.. When she got into their car we slowly approached. Marisa waved. It was a day I cannot and will not forget. I am the fan and admirer. Why! Whilst in London in the making of the movie Brannigan, I had the opportunity to say hello, I was Private Chauffeur/ Driver at the time. I thank Mr Wayne for the memories and movie entertainment through all the years until now 2024. Huge collection (not cheap tack) and had a huge window engraved/sand blasted. R.I.P Mr Wayne. Thank you for the memories. (Ireland)
Thanks for sharing, my dad who passed away in 2021, used to watch his movies all the time. He loved westerns
You are a class act Lamont always respectful
Great looking guy in his younger years. Very magnetic - look into his eyes. Big, big life, and now here he lies, quiet and still, beneath a plaque shoulder to shoulder with others that he probably didn't know.
Amazing such a simple market for such a famous actor RIP John Wayne another great story Lamont!❤
I always liked John Wayne movies to me John Wayne and Clint Eastwood you will always be my favorite when it comes to westerns.
John Wayne was my Grandma's very favorite, her hero, when I was little & would spend 2 weeks of summer vacation with her, she would never, ever miss anything he was in.
My granny loved him as well! All the kids would buy different Duke mementos over the years. She had one picture of him that was laminated onto a piece of wood. She hung it up in her living room and kept it until she passed, now my mom has it.
@@msbigdog1460said that you don't know that he was ultimately despicable human being
Tragic that your grandma didn't see him for what he truly was
Mr. Wayne you brought your fans so much joy
As always Lamont we appreciate your time and grate effort into making this video happen.
A great video,my Dad John Parsons liked John Wayne's movies, loved westerns.

RIP ,Duke. ❤
My late father in law loved John Wayne. ❤
I'm surprised that his headstone wasn't bigger and nicer for it to stand out.
Rip John Wayne aka the Duke 😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢 TRUE GRITS
Surprised someone as famous as he was does not have a fancier headstone.
I remember Nikki's auto accident and viewed those graphic, gory photos that shouldn't have been leaked
Amen 💔😢
Rooster Cogburn was a really good movie for the fans. Thanks Lamont.
Next in our era is Clint Eastwood

Never ceases to amaze me how humble his grave is despite being larger than life.
Believe Clint Eastwood is number 2 of the world's most famous cowboy actors 🤠
My dad was a huge fan of John Wayne back in the day. Love the baby picture of him. He had a big head lol.
Poor mom, 😂😂👍
A boy named, Sue......Marion 🌹
I believe his last role was in the shootist with Ron Howard.
What a simple grave to a big star
Many thanks from Australia for doing this.
Read about the movie, the Conqueror. It was filmed near a nuclear testing site and 220 set member developed cancer with 42 dying. John Wayne and Susan Hayward included
Dick Powell who directed the movie died of cancer. Agnes Moorhead ( Endora from Bewitched) also died from cancer. Lee Van Cleef was also in it. His cause of death has been listed as heart disease but he was also battling throat cancer. So yeah a lot of people were exposed to that radiation.
I heard the same about the folks who worked on the tv show Bonanza.
Thanks Lamont. I loved the war movies he starred in. ~LOVE ONE ANOTHER~~~~~Sherry.
Thanks for the video And remembering him and some of his life stories.❤
I remember my dad used to watch John Wayne's movies 🎥 and rock in his rocking chair 😊
great video. His last movie I believe was the Shootist with Lauren Bacall and James Stewart. He also appeared as himself on a hilarious episode of 'Maude'.
Harry Morgan, John Carradine, Scatman Crothers & Ron Howard were in that flick as well.
This my friend, is very GROUNDING - tomorrow is the very most important thing, and then it is no longer. Fact of living is the end of living, dying is part of living. I appreciate every story. No matter how important one seems to be - in the end, we are all the same, all of us are exactly the same. We are now re-making his old movies - so that is a bit of homage - and our youth enjoy the old stories again (TRUE GRIT, for example).
I loved watching John Wayne when I was growing up.
John Wayne. ❤ .My HERO of all time..
So SAD he only received one award for his acting... terrible 😢
Yes thank you!!!
gosh the grass looks healthy and plush.
It was rumored that John Wayne smoked 5-6 packs of cigarettes a day. 😞😞 R.I.P John Wayne ... my favorite actor
Yup and he had to get a lung removed because of it
My Dad was a big fan of his/his movies. I liked his toughness/no nonsense, etc. but not a big western fan. If I had to watch one I'm guessing it would be his I liked, but never seen any of his movies. I don't know how but never seen any YT vids on him until now, never seen his grave! I really like his headstone, very nice. Thank you as always Lamont, love you! 💕💕
John was the perfect Cowboy.
R.I.P JOHN
I LOVE me some John Wayne....
The life of the famous pilgrim
I absolutely adored John Wayne. He reminded me of my grandfather.
Surprised that his resting place is so humble, or that it hasn’t been updated faded stone no flowers

#2 cowboy actor would be Clint Eastwood. Clint was pretty much the successor to John Wayne.
Such a small grave marker for a legend of cinema
Great video Lamont 👩🏻🏫👏🏻🥰‼️ I’m a fan of John Wayne. Have been for a while. Three of my favorite John Wayne movies are “Fort Apache”, “She Wore a Yellow Ribbon” and “Rio Grande”.
