  • It's no secret that the past few generations of Hondas have had some pretty bad cooling issues...today we're putting the 2020 CRF450R to the test to see if Honda was able to fix those issues on the newest line of race bikes!

Engine ice is for sure great when you want to exchange heat faster and better than 50/50 mix but you will also have more of a risk to boilover and loss of coolant.
Evans waterless doesn't boil so it stays in the machine and you will have less chance of ping when running hot BUT it will not solve an overheating problem.
The key is to get the hot coolant as fast as possible from the motor to the radiators and have a really good heat-exchange then get that fluid back in the engine.
In the world of hopes and dreams, it would be awesome to have the heat exchange of engine ice and the boil point of evans coolant. Sadly the reality we live in does not allow this.
So on the short fast version of this.
Better/faster heat exchange = engine ice
    Higher boiling point: Evans coolant.
More coolant flow/speed : Boyesen supercooler
More fluid displacement: Aftermarket head and radiators

I run oversized Fluidyne radiators they are great -thick, strong with tig welds and of course they hold more coolant capacity. My bike is fully modded but never overheats and I was doing tight slow technical single track in 95*+ temps. That new Honda you got is a hell of bit of kit!! Would hate to see it getting hot!!

I didn't know the Honda made the most power, I always thought the Yami had it covered!
Off topic of this video, but is the top clamp back to stock helping? (I comment while watching, and you just said you'll have a new video of that so nevermind).
The windscreen will be so nice. Wind noise is just so frustrating, nothing you can do about it after it's too late.
3:57 - Blowing out berms? Who are you, me? 😂
Being in Colorado, I really don't deal with the heat like Florida, and/or I'm just not riding as hard as you, obviously. What does the bike start to do when losing coolant? In an older video I remember you pulling off the track and saying the bike was overheating. What are the symptoms of an overheating bike?
Rippin' out there though brotha. I've always felt the aggressive map is overkill, even for my '17. Because it doesn't give you MORE power, just a harder hit on the power and harder to control. I think it was something Kris Keefer said. But since then I also got my ECU remapped to be more manageable.
    Thanks for the footy, Bridgett.

sand guys know about clogged fuel filters, and lean issues. Alcohol based coolants will only shut off the problem but not fix-it. check your mapping and go rich, especialy in the sand. It worked for me still race that ol honda on the same top end after 200hours.

  • @maverick2242

    Good video Jeff.
Have you tried silicone hoses, maybe get CV4 / Samco on onboard, will help with heat soak and run the bike cooler. Cooler is always more power and more reliability too eh.

  • @Hanibul_Lecktor

Back in 2003 for Baja we ran a im frame coolany reservoir because feep sand and the heat would make them puke coolant. 100% fixed that issue. With the 2019 I bet it was a mapping issue. I don't see significant changes in the 2020 motors

  • @chadsugden411

Id say if you have coolant issues get upgraded radiators. i know some people dont like the thicker ones cuz they can sometimes widen the shrouds a bit. But i had overheating problems on an older crf i had and upgraded radiators and never once had issues with it after. Thing was reliable and lasted years with out over heating.
I was considering it for my newer bike but its the 16 and its never had over heating issues so far. But then again i dont ride super hard like i used to on my older bike.

It's not a Honda issue it's a coolant issue g .. the coolant that you use in the bike plays a big part in it overheating .. the coolant shouldn't come out of the overflow hose when being ridden or at idle for a few secs ..if it does then the cylinder head is either warped or the head gasket is blown ... Or the coolant has a low temperature point ..
