    i just did mine yesterday it took my brother and i hours to do on a 2013 kawasaki klx250s because kawasaki uses an insane design with a mechanical seal that the inner part is ceramic thin outer is metal that literally glues in and doesn't want to come out plus behind it is the oil seal and then bearing for oil pump i wish i would have made a video because theres not 1 video on my bike on how to do it theres other kawasaki ' s with similar design and same principle but still different and it figured it would start leaking out of weep hole just out of warranty since i bought the bike off showroom floor brand new the day it arrived had a great warranty that never even got used which is great but what a waste

      From what i gathered and from looking at the service manual, only replace the front seal if its leaking just a bit and its only coolant. If you got oil mixed with coolant coming out of the weep hole that means both are shot and need to be replaced.

    Just bought a KTM exc-250. Didn't notice whilst there buying the bike but when I got home I've noticed I have a leak, I thought it may just be the overflow from the rad and coming down through the frame, thought could be a lose jubilee clip, now on further inspection I've found another nut that looks rather wet and will be checking this out first thing tomorrow. This is my first 4 stroke that I've owned and was told that they get really hot quick if being left to idle for anything over a minute and the way they cool down is to be ridden and that this could course it to come from the overflow? Any other suggestions on things to look out for or look at whilst I'm giving it the once over? Thanks. Great video by the way

    • @Ebrakes
      @Ebrakes  7 лет назад

      ENDURO84 thank you! and it would take more than a minute from start up to come out the over flow... I'm assuming your bike is like most and doesn't have a rad fan? If that's the case then yes sitting still will not provide air flow to cool your coolant, but I would say more like 5 minutes or more for that to happen... Riding it does push air and cool the system. However it would be pretty obvious if it was coming out of the over flow and no where else. Can you be more specific about the bolt that's leaking? Is it the drain plug on the water pump? Let me know where you think the coolant is for sure coming from and I'll do my best to diagnose from there.

  • @johnbar4126
    @johnbar4126 6 лет назад +1

    Hey I have the exact same bike with the oil overflow plug striped out. Would you recommend replacing the engine casing or re-tap and die it?

    • @Ebrakes
      @Ebrakes  6 лет назад

      John Bar definitely give a new bolt and tapping the threads a try, at the very worst you'll have a tap that you can use on other future things (if you don't already have an entire kit) but replacing the engine case will be costly to your wallet and your time. If the tap fails then youll be forced to buy a new case but I would try a tap first for sure.

    Hi, unfortunately the exact story has occurred to me today. Before riding for the first time I had to fill the coolant from almost empty. Anyways, I'm concerned both seals are bad. It Is pissing out bad. Obviously bought a lemon, what should I do? Buy new, inner and outer seal, water pump bearing, water pump shaft, impeller, pump seal, outer crank case gasket and associated bolts seals. Should all oils and fluids be replaced as they might have been compromised? Finally, do I need a press to get the bearing in/out?

    • @Ebrakes
      @Ebrakes  8 лет назад

      never seen a yz400f water pump first hand so I could be mistaken but I think the same basic rule applies to almost all things: condition...if they are both in bad condition then they both need replacing...or any other variance of that situation, if you want complete peace of mind I'd replace both of them but if confident one or both are still in useable condition you can keep it. hope that helps! sorry it's not a more direct yes or no answer but I really think it all depends on your exact situation, let me know if I can help with anything else!

    • @Ebrakes
      @Ebrakes  8 лет назад

      +Ryan bell If its only coolant, then yes technically only the outer water seal is the problem, but like I said in the other message, since its apart i would really recommend replacing everything, that way you have peace of mind knowing that everything is new and going to last a long time. Also I had a odd-ball bearing failure which led to my water pump leaking again :( but I filmed some new video and will hopefully have time to edit it and post a new and improved video sometime in the near future. It includes a way to modify your impeller for better results!

      If you are not changing the oil seal or bearing no, the water seal can be changed just by taking of the water pump cover. Be careful not to damage anything though! And while you can, I really would recommend just taking it all apart and replacing every wear component. Including counter balancer parts.

    • @Ebrakes
      @Ebrakes  7 лет назад

      Jack Qwerty very interesting, could you see where that 4 second leak came from? And first things first, check your coolant level. If it's low then you'll definitely have a leak somewhere. Or how old is the coolant? You could have some gunk in the radiator blocking flow. Let me know about those two things and I'll see if I can't figure out what's up with your bike.

    • @jackqwerty3277
      @jackqwerty3277 7 лет назад

      The coolant is probally a little older im not sure exactly how old i should drain it, it started just dripping i shut the bike off by that time it stopped evrythings so it hot evaporated so i dont know where it came from dripped onto my exaust thats all i know
      To check the coolant u open the rad cab supposed to be just over the fins put the cap back on start her up and if u check it again after u filled it its below the fins so u cant see it because it gets rid of the extra as far as i know which its doing everything 100% right im pretty sure, its not leaking at all just for those seconds that it happened
      Summed up u cant tell how low it is until u top it off thanks for the info Ill drain that bitch

  • @ronaldkrause2310
    @ronaldkrause2310 8 лет назад

    So if its leaking out of that wheep hole then you have to change the little rubber seal? How much was the seal?

    • @Ebrakes
      @Ebrakes  8 лет назад

      +Ronald Krause If its leaking coolant out of the seal, the outer seal is bad, if its leaking oil, then bearings and inner seal are bad, if both then both are bad, and on top of that if the shaft is bad, then its ruining the outer seal and making it leak water. And then on top of all of that, the shaft that runs all the way through the engine behind the impeller, could have bad bearings, making the whole assembly wobble, allowing coolant to seep through and leak out. Watch both my videos on it and hopefully it will give you a pretty good idea of what you need to do! let me know if I can help clarify anything for you!

    So if that weep hole (telltale hole) had liquid coming out of it then you know the seals are bad on the impeller? Also, is an impeller the same thing as a water pump??

    • @Ebrakes
      @Ebrakes  7 лет назад +2

      Shaine MacDonald yup! depending on what liquid is coming out you can tell which seal is bad or if both are, oil means inner seal, coolant means outer seal. And yes but more specifically the impeller is part of your water pump the seals, bearings, shaft, impeller, washers and cover etc... make up the whole water pump assembly if that makes sense.

    • @Ebrakes
      @Ebrakes  7 лет назад

    Buddy u just put that seal in incorrectly .... its backwards ... the spring inside of seal goes to inside of motor..

    • @Ebrakes
      @Ebrakes  6 лет назад +3

      Nah bud, actually the entire point of my video was that the seal does not go that way haha, if you don't believe me call up Honda, or look at the microfiche. Flat side of seal faces towards the motor, spring side faces away from motor. The outer seal (waterpump) is trying to keep the water out of the motor and weep hole... So it needs to have the lip facing out on the impeller shaft.

    • @WikusTerblanche

      It makes sense that it goes in backwards, or the water will run in to the motor.

      RekxFord It wound up being the seals for the impeller shaft were worn, also some light indentation on the impeller shaft led me to believe it needed to be replaced. So after replacing all the seals and the shaft there is not more coolant leaking into the engine oil(left side crankcase).

    Did you cut out half the video?? At 3:00 you're taking off the whole cover then it cuts and you have the cover back on?? You skipped everything but the last seal lol

    • @Ebrakes

      I was only replacing the outer seal in this video...and showing the direction of the outer seal...I replaced the bearing and oil seal at a later date as they did not need replacing at that time...oil seal goes on opposite direction and bearing fits in place...I hope that helps! ask any more questions if you have them!

    do I have to take the engine cover off to take the seal and bearing out or can I just pull it out

    • @Ebrakes
      @Ebrakes  8 лет назад

      +Julien Mathieu Sorry for the delayed reply, I was out of town. And for outer seal....just CAREFULLY pull out with pliers or something as to not damage your shaft....bearing and inner seal sadly have to be taken out from the inside which means the cover must come off :(

    I have a Trx450 I was riding and all the coolant came out the weap hole you think it's only the seal

    • @Ebrakes
      @Ebrakes  8 лет назад

      all of the coolant came out at once or it all slowly leaked out? And it all depends...You can try just replacing the seal, and inspect your impeller shaft, and if you just replace the seal and it still leaks the you'll have to replace the other stuff, or you can replace all of it for peace off mind...either way I couldn't say for sure with out looking at it sorry. and be sure to check out the most recent video I uploaded about water pumps much more info and more detailed! if you have any more questions feel free to ask!

    Do u put the numbers on the seal on the inside or facing outside

    • @Ebrakes
      @Ebrakes  4 года назад

      Back of the seal (usually with seal number, and has flat face) faces in towards the motor. Seal lip faces outward towards the impeller cover. And that is just for the outer water pump seal.

  • @tylernoon2350
    @tylernoon2350 3 года назад

    What process did you use to crack the impeller loose?

    • @Ebrakes
      @Ebrakes  3 года назад

      A small impact will work if you have it... Or just put it in gear and step on the rear brake while you turn the wrench.

    Great video, huge help! I just traded my four wheeler for a 2004 CRF450R and it is leaking coolant only, no oil. What is the part number, or exact name, for the seal you replace at 3:50? Thanks!

    • @Ebrakes
      @Ebrakes  7 лет назад

      B Davis water pump seal, part number: 91211-KA3-761, if you're looking for part numbers cheap cycle parts is a great resource, they have loads of microfiche to look through and corresponding part numbers. And thanks! I'm glad to hear I could help, let me know if you any more questions. I hope you like the crf! They're definitely great bikes.

      Where does it leak from? Does it only leak when the motor is running? And then it stops when the engine is warmed up? Or still leaks a little?

      A Broke rider's life Is it possible that you damaged your seal when you replaced it? and are you 100% certain that your impeller shaft has no nicks or burs on it? Mine felt almost completely smooth...couldn't see the nicks with out a magnifying glass, but after I replaced that it fixed it for good. Those are the first 2 things that come to mind, let me know. By the way...love your channel name!

    • @abrokeriderslife5229
      @abrokeriderslife5229 9 лет назад

      no dint change it' and it did have a small score in it' so thing it going to be that then' so should i just change the shaft and seal if there no play in the counter balance? tytytytyt u are de man tytytyty for quick reply

    • @Ebrakes
      @Ebrakes  9 лет назад

      A Broke rider's life Yup, if there is no play on the big shaft behind your right engine cover, then I would replace the small impeller shaft, and the outer seal that goes around it just to be safe, then you should be good man. Good luck!

    Would it be alright to just block off that weep hole as a temporary fix

    • @Ebrakes
      @Ebrakes  5 лет назад

      Nope, strongly do not recommend doing that. Besides still losing coolant from your radiator, all that will do is put water inside your oil and give you nice rusty gears for maximum engine damage.

    Wish someone had an old rm that Col help me out I about to buy a book . But the shaft that turn the pump gas lil groves in it and it has to be leaking. From that mecanal seal and the seal behind the bearing

    • @Ebrakes
      @Ebrakes  9 лет назад

      +Craig Hudzinski Oh yeah, if the shaft is thrashed then that is definitely where it is leaking from, those things have to be spotless to keep from leaking...get a new shaft and seal and you should be set! get both of the seals if there are on your bike, might as well just replace everything at this point and then it will be good for a long time to come!

    Alright I have 04 Crf250r, and it will not run when the motor is warm. It Run on choke pretty good but when it's off it doesn't run as well. If you know please msg me back.

    • @Ebrakes
      @Ebrakes  10 лет назад

      My first guess would be that your carburetor is a little dirty, and its clogged up somewhere, but when the choke is on it lets just enough of the mixture through to run. Try and give it a good clean and see what happens. If you already have I'll have to think a bit more :) Either way let me know.

    • @user-sp8eb6iz7f

      With the choke on, the bike runs richer, maybe you need to tune/rejet a little 'richer', take a look at the plug for the proper colors??

    Hey man nice video! My bike is leaking into the oil and making it milky I just replaced the seal and it still doing it! Could this because its in backwards?

    • @Ebrakes
      @Ebrakes  8 лет назад

      thanks! I'm glad to hear you liked it! and yeah, the seal may be on backwards or there is play in the shaft(s) or the impeller shaft itself is damaged, but I would check seal placement first, I uploaded a more in depth video recently if you want to check that out it might be helpful!

    • @Ebrakes
      @Ebrakes  9 лет назад +1

      take your cover off and look at the inside of the water pump...you should be able to see if its leaking in from there...and id say its more likely a water pump seal...try that and if it doesnt work then id try head gasket.
