      I think it sounds like a banjolin. I own a National Pro banjolin when I play & sing in the Yerba Buena Jug Band here in San Francisco.

I'll add that it also sounds not unlike a plastic ukulele, assuming you can find one that stays in tune! 😉 For some reason, I'm reminded of Jerry's studio patter at the end of "Hesitation Blues" on the Shady Grove record, 'A truly obnoxious instrument, but it sounds fuckin' great!'
