Considering good Electrified acoustics did not arrive until 1968--1969 using a Piezo pickup or better pickups as in a smaller Piezo Clip On Microphone made originally for TV news and upright Bass Guitar, I am not surprised players loved using slightly Older Martin or Gibson Acoustic Guitars where they were louder, brought bigger Condenser Microphones of what they liked best, or used what are now early design Sound Hole Humbuckers either a direct cable or direct jack.

I’ve seen Eric and Suzy many times. They are pillars of the Berkeley and Bay Area folk and bluegrass scene going way back. Once saw them at a backyard party in the mid-80s as their Cajun incarnation The Aux Cajunals. Most recent time is last November at Hopmonk in Sebastopol, the two of them playing and talking about old blues and Cajun songs (in French, of course) for a hundred or more people on an early Wednesday evening. Great stuff, super entertaining, down to earth- catch them if you can. Their daughter, Allegra, plays bass and has a radio show on KPFA on Sunday afternoons that features music in the same vein.

Thanks for shining some light on Thompson, an extremely important figure in the west coast bluegrass/acoustic strings scene. Most deadheads who look into Garcia's early life have heard/read his name, but he has a bigger legacy than simply his association with Garcia. Much like blues cats such as Robert Lockwood and Johnny Shines who got sick of being asked about Robert Johnson, Thompson may tire of being constantly button-holed about Garcia (though he was a good sport here). Pleased to hear him mention (Brooks) Adams Otis, a major documentarian of so much bluegrass music, from his tapes made of the bluegrass greats during his time on the east coast, to the west coast scene (B.A.O. became pals in the army with Roland White, and later recorded The Kentucky Colonels, White's band with his brother Clarence White). I was very excited when I saw this, and I hope you do get out to Berkeley and do a feature on Suzy&Eric and Thompson's fabulous D-28.

Great interview, Otis-- thanks so much for once again making a beautiful bridge and allowing me and many others to venture and cross it. With and through you, I have learned about integral, musical history, and so many world class players. You always bring a delightful blend of music, personalities, and harmonious royalty to top it all off.
I am amazed by Eric's humbleness, and memory that allows him to be a great story teller. He is a kind soul, who has many special gifts. The proof to this is obvious in the comment section, and how many ears and minds that his music has deeply touched.
You, sir are a great artist and architect in your own right. Your passion and realness can be felt every time you talk to us. Lastly, as I alluded to, this bridge is another masterpiece, and I thank you for just being you and sharing all that you deem worthy to share. Stay well, beautiful and above all, safe. You are a treasure!
