  • / loisdavidsonart www.etsy.com/u... Today's demo is a simple loose watercolour landscape painting of an old breakwater on the beach at Cuckmere Haven, to try out some new Chinese hake brushes - I have been informed they are also called yasutomo brushes - I purchased from AliExpress (I don't have the link)
    Materials: Millford 100% cotton cold pressed paper, 11" x 15"/28cm x 38cm, sizes 1, 3 & 5 bamboo hake/yasutomo flat brushes. I used my homemade Cobalt blue, burnt and raw sienna, burnt umber and ivory black watercolour tube paints, but use whatever colours and brushes you prefer if you feel like trying this tutorial.
    My board is at an angle of about 45-60 degrees.
    Many thanks to my lovely Patrons for your support!

    Pure magic -as usual. I bet you could use any old decorator's brush and still create perfection. I agree about no seagulls, the sky is wonderful without.

    Hi Lois! I live further along the coast from you; the Chichester Harbour, Emsworth and Langstone Harbour areas. This tutorial has inspired me to have a go at getting my old paint set and easel out and trying my hand again.
    I love painting skies - they can make a painting's best feature. Skies are always with us and we don't need to go far to see one. I have a balcony where I can practice painting skies each day, if I had the time. This also helps to practice, get used to the paints and tools you have, and know what you can achieve with them.
    You're a great inspiration.

    I love the way you painted this picture. The white sky it’s amazing I’ve never thought of leaving so much white space. The hake brushes are very nice. I have seen them before but I just have the regular Ron Ronson brushes. But I like them very much. I noticed that you don’t use 300# paper rough too much. Is there a particular reason? I just love the way you Demonstrate your paintings online. Thank you so much.

      Thanks you, I think the RR brushes are probably more versatile and durable, but I love trying new brushes. I prefer cold and hot pressed to rough, not sure why, and I prefer 140lb/330g paper but often use lighter ones as they are cheaper and I paint a lot

      Thanks! They are completely different but I like them a lot so far, the RR ones are probably more versatile/durable, but I need to use these ones a bit more and see what else they can do

    I'm yet to find a supply of synthetic hakes to avoid animal hair.

    • @LoisDavidsonArt
      @LoisDavidsonArt  3 года назад

      I think it would be a hard thing to find, but with a bit of trial and error and practice, large synthetic flat brushes are almost as versatile, just need to get used to them I think until someone comes up with a specific alternative
