You've probably never thought of rubbing the windshield of your car with an apple, right? But this is a really good idea and even a very old trick that is especially popular among truck drivers.
Rubbing the windshield with an apple has two advantages. Firstly, you can remove insects from the windshield with a cut apple. Since these can be dissolved by the fruit acid very easily. And you have a much better view if the windshield wiper fails.
The malic acid creates a lotus effect on your windshield. The water simply rolls off and does not stick to the windshield. This means that you can continue driving for a while without wipers, despite the rain, and still have sufficient visibility.
To achieve this effect you have to cut open an apple and wipe the cut surface over your windshield. Try this old but ingenious trick also with you once, if it is necessary!

It only lasts about 10 minutes...then afterwards all the acid from apple washes away leaving your windshield in even worse condition..!! Then the left over acid that is on your windshield gets on the rubber of your wiper blades and deteriorates them before you can blink an eye. Save your apples for apple pies... not for windshields and wipers!! 😜

As a truck driver for years, I can say this works. I use it mostly in the winter when I'm plowing snow. It works for keeping ice from building up on the windshield while the wipers are running. Great on headlights also, mirrors. Just thought I'd throw it out there.

@@sonneversets3530 Get some non-clumping cat litter and put it inside two different nylon socks. put one on the back seat and one on the front floor. Windows will never fog up. I like to leave one on my dash when not driving, works nice. Put socks on wipers if snow is coming. Put Rubbing alcohol in wiper fluid. Also put rubbing alcohol and a few drops of dish soap in a spray bottle = instant de-icer! God Speed

I have seen some people apply soap on the windscreen in case the wipers don't work and it is raining and the effect is the same as in apples. Any soap works
this is the opposite of lotus effect, ie instead super hydrophobic like lotus, you create a super hydrophilic surface. That was why water form transparent film instead of droplets or beads so you can see through clearly. Anti fog coating is like that…

Many years ago a trucker told me this when my wiper broke off. I didn't have an apple so he provided the apple and rubbed it on. He also cut the core out. It worked. It got me to where I could have them repaired.

I waxed my car with shoe polish. Been 3 years and shines like new. Clear for paint and black for whatever is black. Hard to apply, small spot at a time.

I’ve been a lorry driver for over 20 yrs and have never heard of this. Then again here in the U.K. it’s illegal to use a motor vehicle on the road if the wipers don’t work.
It's also illegal to look at your apple whilst driving.

Nice trick, good information, especially when riding with someone else and the problem occurs.
I use a windscreen product called Rain-X. There are other equivalent products that can be applied to the windows of the vehicle to prevent water adhering to the glass surfaces. If applied about once a week these products work fairly well.
I tried it to. In my case it didn't help, I still couldn't see thru the water enough to safely drive
Rain-X must be applied to an absolutely spotlessly clean window first, Great product when applied properly
If you wax your car with Nu Finish, do the windshield too. Does a deep clean, helps blades and water glide, and you don't get the horrible dragging and chattering like Rain-x does when it starts to wear off.
You mean the same orange NuFunish you use for paint or another specific NuFinish for windshield?
Don’t ever wax your red car 🚗 they sometimes turn pink!!. It happened to me after using a drive through car wash. Now I see these pinkish cars all over the place. Poor people got done and were told it was oxidation, no it was a chemical reaction due to cheap wax. 😞

My Grandfather told me a similer trick 45 yrs ago. You used to get small cloth bags of tobacco called Bull Durem at the store. Wet it well and rub it on, same effect. I Always keep a bag in the glove box to reaply untill repair could be made to wiper or motor or fuse etc. Saved my butt a number of times
Worst was driving home at night after working outside of town during heavy rainstorm.
If you wash your mirrors in the bathroom with soap, don't rinse them, just dry them with paper towels. Your mirrors won't fog. This works for windows as well. I've considered trying it on the inside of my cars windows.

Well , it has kept the doctor away. Truth...Rain-x in my wind shieldwasher container. Eliminates the sheeting of the water and all I get are water droplets that blow of above 35 MPH. Makes for excellent visibility.

I saw this on German TV over 40 years ago as a Public Service Announcement. Difference was they showed using it to clean the wipers.
I rubbed mine with a Hostess fruit pie but ended up licking it off.

I appreciate your sharing this trick. We can buy "Rain X" here that also works, but it is not cheap, and if we do not have any on had we could just use an apple. Apple trees we do have. My brother will thank you for this one.

I did this before it rained. The apple juice leaves residue coating that makes the windshield dirty looking and hard to see through it. I don’t recommend using apple on both windshield and headlights. I tried and had to wash it off.
A better way to get this result is to use the same wax you use on the car on your windshield...I use Mothers Catnuba paste wax but really any paste wax will work...wax the car and windows after washing and give it time to set, about 20min...after you remove the wax, you'll have the same protective clear coating on your windows that you do on your paint...water just beads up and rolls off...at hwy speed, it's even possible to turn the wipers off😁🍻...
Also put the wax on you clear plastic headlights...it will help prevent that yellowing oxidation over time, and can even clear it up if it's not to far along🤓
By gosh, now with the sparewheel kit, first aid kit, spare fuses, extra masks and gloves, we now need to carry an apple too. Just in case the wipers don't work. Lol

My wipers quit working in the middle of a down pour. I tried to drive to the grocery store to buy an apple. It was raining so hard that I had a wreck. I should have just stayed in my driveway, since that's where my wipers broke.

What are the chances to have an apple in your car when you need it ? Probably less than actually changing your wipers by the time they stopped working, because that happens gradually..Eventually pull over until the rain stops and before any unwanted event occurs. I have been eating apples on a daily basis for many years now, but I rarely carry apples in my car (unless I washed them prior to bringing them with me).

In the old days, I used tobacco on the windshield, and it shed water from the windshield as well.

@@jaywholoveseveryone1721 I would the tobacco from a few cigarettes it and rub it on driver side of the windshield. It was good enough to have an unobstructed view to see the road. I never had a chance to a tobacco leaf for it was not available.

WD-40 is a good way to do that.

The water just runs down the window! hahaha, it would do that without the apple trick. It's actually not beading at all. It would have been better to show a before and after. I have my doubts how effective this is and especially how long it would last.
