Japan is a country with four clearly defined seasons. On the flip side of these blessings, it has been frequently struck by natural disasters, including earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, and typhoons. Across Japan, there are many attractive buildings and structures that have been constructed through engaging and struggling with the natural environment and carrying on locality. By adopting the perspective of the “built environment,” which puts spotlight on the interplay among buildings, civil engineering works, and landscapes, this video series rediscovers the little-noticed but fascinating buildings and structures that are found nationwide. It is an alternative guide to Japanese architecture, one which is not a retracing of scenic and historic places.
