what i am mostly annoyed with the old SMT games is that when negotiating there was this annoying thing where you can't recruit a law demon if you have a chaos demon in party, or vice versa. I get it that it fits the theme of demon factions but every time that happened i was always screaming "BITCH YOU'RE WORKING FOR ME NOW! NOW GET ALONG BEFORE I SACRIFICE YOU BOTH!"
> Can't talk much about the story because it's an mmo You know, one of the first MMO's to employ cutscenes and active choice that affects gameplay and quest progression? Stuff that still rarely happens in mmos? Imagine was surprisingly competent story-wise and so far seems to remain canon in the SMT timeline.
I still believe that Shin Megami Tensei IV is a masterpiece of handheld game design. I have put more hour into that one single game than the combine total of probably every pokemon game i have ever played. And i played alot of pokemon. I just only wish the world map in SMT IV was just a bit better and there was a bit more in the narrative department as i love the mysterious nature but desire to simply know more about IV. Bottom line i am excited to watch you talk about this game. Your videos are incredible by the way. Keep up the good work
Total agreement. I admit I would rather "play" through Apocalypse more, as the changes for player convenience make it a much more smooth ride in my opinion. But IV is just LEAPS above it in impact. The story, the pacing, the maturity of addressing its content, the natural progression of choosing your path... I've thought more about the implications of any number of choices in this game and what they mean to ME as a person than I have entire franchises. Even if a lot of the characters and the settings are "the same" between IV and Apocalypse, I would argue that IV is much more interesting in both regards. The grit and raw feral nature of IV's world made your characters react and make HARD decisions. Apocalypse takes on a much more campy tone at times, which sets up much more obvious "villains" when things go south. It loses almost all of the strain of making your own REAL decisions because they're already chosen for you. There's a huge difference between "choosing to Stop something horrible which will make a lot of people to die, or choose to Let a group suffer and have more people survive" vs "Be a nice person, or be a dick". Apocalypse had better gameplay, but didn't have better questions to accompany it.
@@0ctopusComp1etely You are completely right. Vanila IV's delivery has a weight to it, things feel more raw and natural, and everything around you feels real. From discovering how Red pills are made at the Reverse Hill building, the hopelessness of Blasted Tokyo and its miserable survivors, talking to the suicidal woman in Ikebukuro, the euthanasia side-quest with the two brothers from Kigicciorgi, and The White's nihilistic longing for death to stop humanity's unending suffering, the story grabs you by the throat and doesn't let go.
I don't know what you guys are talking about, but I have a love/hate relationship with the IV. The setting and it's lore is what interesting, the music is amazing and creates a strong atmosphere, aand the artstyle of main characters (well even Navarre, lol) is pretty good... But my God, the pacing of story, some of it's elements, character development, the alignment system and gameplay in terms of something challenging (not to the point that is RNG or Walter throwing Agi to Minotaur) - is just utter trash. I might be harsh with words, but that's only because I loved the premise of the game and putted my faith into it for like 90+ hours. Oh yeah, and the blend between Kaneko's and Doi's art is just bad, some of the Doi artwork on angels are pretty good, with those alien structures and beastlike look, which got me thinking of the cool concept of how the ones that Mikado trusted look so alienating, while the ones from underneath the ceiling called "the unclean ones" look and act just the same as people of Mikado, so you know, in terms of this idea Doi's artwork is better than Kaneko's, because in Kaneko's art the angels look not so alien. Buut uhhh, that is one of the many skipped opportunities with this game, and it pains me that it could be the true reborn of the whole series and the best game in mainline. Now I'm playing Strange Journey (not Redux, because it's too "anime" and I've had that just enough with the new demons in SMT IV), I'm in like for 5 hours and I already love it more mainly because how the pacing of the plot and characters are going, I hope this is the one game for 3DS (well DS, but nevermind that) that will give me a competent SMT game.
