I was driving my 16-hour commute from work to where I've been staying lately when this came on. Had my iphone on shuffle, didn't know I had purchased this song, and it just about knocked me flat. I had to pull over and cry it out before I could keep driving. I was evacuated from the Fort Mac wildfire on May 3rd this year, and lost my home and everything I owned. All I managed to save was my pets. I decided to look this up to see if there is a music video.. I shouldn't have come here. I suspect I'll be crying all night now.
Sorry for your loss. Hopefully you are coping some 11 months later. I can't even imagine...so many have lost their horns and possessions due to natural disasters this year. Hang in there.
That was the saddest music video I've ever seen, and one of the deepest, most beautiful songs I've heard. Death Cab For Cutie really knows how to hit people right in the feels. Love these guys.
This is too real... As an Australian living close to the fires burning right now... I can't even begin to describe to you what it's like watch a mega fire burn through everything. We had to evacuate by boat. People we know, lost everything.
This song has a lot of meaning to me. I'm sure it has a lot of meaning to lots of other people too.. I don't normally volunteer personal information on the internet, but I feel like I should right now. A year ago today, I planned on taking my own life. I was going to do that to myself while listening to this song here... It's kinda a anniversary I suppose. I just want to say to anyone who is sad, hopeless, in despair, life does get better. It may take a while, but everything will be alright.
My best friend of middle school committed suicide nine years ago… I remember when this video came out on RUclips and him introducing it to me. I didn’t know five years later he’d be dead. And nine years later i still miss him. I just want to let you know I’m glad you’re still here. You may not know it, but there are people who think about you and appreciate the time they spent with you. Even if they don’t call you, or text you, they still think about you, and love you and appreciate you for the time they got to share with you. I’m glad you’re still with us friend. Seriously. I hope twelve years later, you are still doing well.
I just had the ten year anniversary of my best friend's suicide. I hope you're still fighting the good fight. I am, every day, and now I'm not doing it alone anymore. My fiancé went with me to celebrate my friend's birthday this year, and his last day. We decorated his tombstone. I hadn't been able to do that before. I never had the time or the money.
As a guy in my 40's, I'm a little embarrassed to say it but this song (and video) makes me break down in tears every time I watch this. Like, tears running down my cheeks.
I’d been searching for this song forever. Literally over 10 years. I remember seeing this music video on vh1 when it first came out. Song is sad don’t get me wrong but it does bring back that late 2000’s nostalgia.
Beautiful song. I remember I used to listen to this song all the time when I was younger. Now after seeing the music video, I cry every time I hear it.
Been on standby for possible evacuation past few days... This song has been in my head the whole time. It truly is a beautiful song that hits both literally and metaphorically. I hope everyone stays safe, remember that life goes on and we'll get through this year of insanity
alvaro maldonado This is definitely on my list of firefighter songs. One you should check out if you haven't is the version of "Cold Missouri Waters" by the group Cry Cry Cry.
Funny. I am a teacher, and I use this song explain what it was like when I lived in Tucson, watching Mt. Lemmon (that is how it's spelled) burn. Every time I hear the song it is like I never left that time and place in my life. Sadly, the kids can't wrap their minds around the idea of a fire that massive. You really have to experience it to understand, and without a doubt, Death Cab did.
This gave me chills. I had gotten really into this whole album, ESPECIALLY this song. The CD stayed in for weeks. And the morning I got the call, OH GOD. The chords, the melody, the instrumental at the end.........it was EVERYTHING I felt EXACTLY how I was feeling it. Like God was saying "I know you are shattered and mentally/emotionally scattered everywhere at once. I know you can't make ANY sense of it, so here. I'm giving you this song. THIS is what you're feeling right now." I am SO sorry you lost your father. Just know that there was someone out there who did the EXACT same thing you did when he lost his. "And there I knew, that everything would be alright."
I remember hearing this song in MTV in 2010, i was only a kid back then, thanks to mtv I discover great music's, man I wish I could go back in time to experience great childhood moments once again
I love this video. Very deep. Love how everyone is worried about material things except for the old man and the kid. They know what's really important.
Moving song and video. Everyone was taking their meaningless, material possessions, but the kid knew. This has a very relevant message no matter the event.
The old man he sees through the window, as well. He was collecting all his photos. Looked very similar to Billy, so probably a precursor to what Billy and his wisdom will become in their later days.
they played this at rifflandia Saturday and everyone held up lighters and swayed back and forth like a fire and it was so beautiful definitely the most melodic and amazing moment. So proud to say I was there for Chris' last performance
This song came on when I was on my way to see my mom for the last time. We knew she only had a few days left and I was driving to see her. The lyrics comforted me and wrecked me at the same time. I can't listen to it now without my heart swelling and tears flowing, and that strong memory of the last fragile moments with her. And imagining it's her singing "everything will be alright" just for me in the car that day. Thank you for such a beautiful song.
When the wind picked up And the fire spread And the grapevines seemed left for dead. And the northern sky, looked like the end of day, The end of days. The wake up call to a rented room Sounded like an alarm of impending doom. To warn us it's only a matter of time. Before we all burn Before we all burn Before we all burn Before we all burn. We bought some wine and some paper cups Near your daughter's school when we picked her up And drove to a cemetery on a hill, On a hill. Watched the plumes paint the sky gray As she laughed and danced through the field of graves There I knew it would be alright That everything would be alright, Would be alright Would be alright Would be alright Would be alright. And the news reports on the radio Said it was getting worse As the ocean air fanned the flames. But I couldn't think of anywhere I would have rather been To watch it all burn away, To burn away. The firemen worked in double shifts, With prayers for rain on their lips, And they knew it was only a matter of time.
I always thought it was “Grapevine,” singular, referring to the chunk of I-5 that bears that name; have I been hearing it wrong? The fires are further north so vines makes perfect sense too…
This song makes me think of Alzheimers and how it slowly burns away your memories. "we knew it was only a matter of time until we all burn". The video seems to really stress the importance of memories.
And then there's the people stressing over their TV's and their cowboy boots, while the guy's girlfriend got burned. Seems the message is not to make too many memories on material objects and popular culture, and to make memories with the people you love.
The actual lyrics are about death ending a relationship I always thought. It could be literal or metaphorical. Sort of a sequel to “Crooked Teeth” (about a breakup.) The grapevines being a symbol of growth in a relationship and joy (since wine has biblical connotations of celebration). Just my thoughts.
@@spencerandersen271 but it was literally witten during the 2007 california fires and centered around it. Ben gibbard himself has said so and there's a story about when he wrote this saying it's very literal what he's signing as he was having a picnic with wine on a cementary on a hill and people were speaking about the fires creeping down from the grapevines. It's cool what you think about the song but the "actual" lyrics of the song are more of a anecdotal type of something he experienced instead of a love story.
This song reminds me of when i was 7 years old living in California with the Cedar fire in 2003, we almost had to evacuate and there was smoke and ash coming down like snow. We couldn't go outside and I was living in constant fear of my house burning down, I know lots of people who lost their homes very close to me. Scary times, great song.
The little details on this video were beautifully done Like Billy sitting in the front while the mother sitting in the backseat to comfort the son He sees the picture and a single drop hits the frame like a tear then the rain follows
My house burnt down as a child. It was 21 years ago and I can still remember standing there in thr middle of the night and just watching it all burn away like it was yesterday
A couple years ago was our first Christmas without one of my Grandmas. It was one of the coldest nights ever recorded in my area. I was driving home from Christmas at my Mom's house & this song came on it's one of those feelings I will never forget. The song really isn't about what was going on in my life at all, but it still felt like the perfect song. I turned off shuffle on my phone & played this song on repeat all the way home. I play this song often to remember that feeling.
Last summer (2015), living in the Northwest, it seemed like I was reading news like this every day. Wildfires were blazing all over the West Coast and it seemed like another town somewhere was evacuated, then usually burned to a crisp, once a week. It got so bad that they brought in firefighters all the way from Australia to fight the blazes in Washington. I'm sure there have been wildfire epidemics in the Northwest like the one of 2015 in the past as well, and kudos to Death Cab for writing a song about them. Hope Chris Walla found his keytar.
I was there as well my friend. I lost my daughter around that time and this song makes my heart ache every time I hear it even with as much beauty as it has.
This song has brought me to tears so many goddamn times. Only after almost a decade do I think I'm ready to listen to this song again as it brings up memories of past love and loss.
I haven’t heard this since I was in high school my sophomore or junior year and the nostalgia that hit me was so pure it was almost like listening to this song for the first time.. such a beautiful song.
i used to watch this all the time when i was little and i’ve been trying to find it for years and finally re-found due to reddit this will forever make me bawl my eyes out
Fuck... I am usually considered a burly manly man...but this song never fails to get me teary-eyed. I don't recall why...a lost love perhaps. I grew up next to orchards and grapevines, so it must be the nostalgia. Good times...sad good times.
Through out the years i find myself needing to hear this song. This song with this video, it gets me everytime! Thats one of the coolest little brothers i have ever did have the pleasure of meeting!
This song is still one of my favorite songs of all times and music is my life ALL types such a beautiful art throughout. Truly thank you for this song 🙏
I love this song...rainy day in october...open the windows slightly...light some candles.. Disconnect with the world...what do you feel?....happiness..enjoy your day💋
The harmonies are Crazy Beautiful!! One of the most healing rhythms is Halftime Shuffle. It creates a cradle of back and forth motion, holding emotion like a big, loving Bear Hug.
Brings tears in my eyes everytime I listen to it. DCFC have some magic in their songs, this is what makes them special. You don't listen to their songs, you actually feel them. Lucky you if you like them!
@@brendanmeyer1632 lol. Very hard to believe that you don't know of Rob Brown, and/or the fact he's been grooving for longer than many of us have been alive! 😄 It's impossible to know all of the music and bands out there; especially if you're a foundational cat like Rob, and know the top 40 tunes for every decade by heart, but don't necessarily pay attention to all the current garbage out there. lol. I wouldn't put DCFC or the Postal service in that "garbage" category by any means. But, it's very easy to understand how a pro like Rob isn't necessarily paying attention to all the emo bands out there, unless specific tunes like this are brought to his attention. He's quite busy killing it with lessons, grooves, covers, and learning very advanced tunes. Plus, just because you like or gravitate towards a certain genre/tune, doesn't mean everyone else will follow suit. Have a good one! Happy jams/drumming!
isn't it just shocking how the mainstream music nowadays only talks about drugs, sex, and partying, yet there's beautiful music like this that gets way less recognition? songs are more than just a beat. listening to the lyrics and understanding their deeper meaning are vital to amazing music.
CaptainPudz i agree with you mostly. music is whatever you want it to be, simply put. you can have it be a super happy, rather annoying clubbing song, or you could have something super emotional such as this, something super agressive such as henker, something jazzy and nice such as the reign of kindo, etc. the thing that ties all music together is that it's art, and art is not something boxed in. though i would wish things such as this were recognized more than such things as katy perry or pitbull. --a metal drummer and guitarist
CaptainPudz Dude, the average person isn't seeking depth in music. People just want to party or listen a catch tune while driving to work. That's why mainstream music will almost 100% be filled with shit. It's not a "nowadays" thing, it's always like that. Now good music always existed too, you just have to dig a little deeper.
Francisco Farias pretty much. even the 60s/70s music that was considered "mainstream" didn't have deep lyrics and was just a regular song for people to party or whatever
CaptainPudz It's because party music will always be #1. No one would listen to music like this at parties. Don't get me wrong, I much rather have music like this on the radio than the crap they have now. It's something we can't really change though.
I'm preparing to go away for school soon, and trying to decide which of my things I should keep, and which things I should part with before I go. It's hard to let go when I attach sentimental value to the stuff I own. But then I see this video, and I am reminded that the most important things to take with me aren't things at all: they are the memories of those I love. That's all we really can take in the end.
Unlike a lot of bands today, Death Cab can be appreciated solely on their lyrics. Take away the music and they're like poetry =] Deep, meaningful and moving. How anyone can claim that's not so baffles me...
I cried the first few hundred times I heard this. Now, it just makes my chest ache and I am able to hold back the tears. Sometimes though, I let them fall cause I want to.
i listened to this at like 3 am last night, it's 11 am right now, i was up talking to random people and some really cute guy online it was fun and i'm tired and i just love this song. death cab for cutie is so good.
For me, it was the Cedar Fire 2003. We watched half of San Diego County burn, and I prayed all day and night that our house would be ok. I must've been a sophomore in HS, and sitting on our roof watching the night hills burn orange around us was something I'll never forget. Thankfully, we made it, but we ended up delivering food and clothes to thousands of people in our area who lost everything. This song slays me every time I listen to it, and really takes me back. Thanks to Ben and the gang for capturing such a moment!!!
i survived a condo fire. this song meant so much to me when i was recovering in the hospital. my girlfriend at the time made it out okay with me, but this video always tears me up thinking about that night.
death cab for cutie could change the world becuase they help me get through the day with there music it makes the day suck a little less so thank you death cab for cutie :) thanks
This song has always meant, to me, no matter how terrible things get, if you hold onto those you love, it'll be okay, and I can concur with this with experience.
"its only a matter of time before we all burn" means "life is short". "But I couldn't think of anywhere I would of rather been, to watch it all burn away" means "being with friends and family makes this short life enjoyable, even in the face of danger".

And the fire spread
And the grapevines seemed left for dead.
And the northern sky, looked like the end of day,

The wake up call to a rented room
Sounded like an alarm of impending doom.

We bought some wine and some paper cups
Near your daughter's school when we picked her up
And drove to a cemetery on a hill,
On a hill.
Watched the plumes paint the sky gray
As she laughed and danced through the field of graves
There I knew it would be alright
That everything would be alright,
Would be alright
Would be alright
Would be alright
Would be alright.
And the news reports on the radio
Said it was getting worse
As the ocean air fanned the flames.

Fuck... I am usually considered a burly manly man...but this song never fails to get me teary-eyed. I don't recall why...a lost love perhaps. I grew up next to orchards and grapevines, so it must be the nostalgia. Good times...sad good times.
This song sounds so sad yet it brightens my day every time I listen to it
I first listened to this when i was younger and fell in love to this music. Now, its October 29 2020 can't believe its been 10 years since.
Through out the years i find myself needing to hear this song. This song with this video, it gets me everytime! Thats one of the coolest little brothers i have ever did have the pleasure of meeting!
This song really hits home right now, especially with all the fires currently burning throughout california
I'm in 2018 and this song go on my favourite of all time.
Ten years?! Man I remember when this video premiered on Fuse. This song was played after many bad days.
I couldn't stop crying the first time I heard this... still gives me the feels.
It's a gorgeous song. Shawn R.
Beautiful song
Luke holland brought me here. Amazing song, amazing band
same here ma. beautiful song
IzhakIbDrums me too
same here :D
Love you
That's the good thing about musicians doing covers. They lead you to music which you would otherwise never hear
Wow, I didn't expect to cry today, thanks Death Cab :P
My dad died this May and I listened to this song while he was in the hospice. I can't listen to it now without crying
This song is still one of my favorite songs of all times and music is my life ALL types such a beautiful art throughout. Truly thank you for this song 🙏
kid looks like Hank Hill back before he sold propane and propane accessories.
LOL, classic
I'll tell you what! Some neighbor burned our entire neighborhood using charcoal briquettes! Bobby, this is why you use clean, reliable propane.
That's hysterical. And right on.
I think this is his origin story
Colonel Angus fuckin genius😂
The Australian fires made me remember this song.
Same. And both have dogs as profile pics :(
@@iliketoeatbeefinacan oh yeah, and there's a dog in the video too.
2017 Napa Valley fires song for me.
I love this song...rainy day in october...open the windows slightly...light some candles.. Disconnect with the world...what do you feel?....happiness..enjoy your day💋
I just realized the guys that said "Wheres my keytar?" is the band
The harmonies are Crazy Beautiful!! One of the most healing rhythms is Halftime Shuffle. It creates a cradle of back and forth motion, holding emotion like a big, loving Bear Hug.
who's watching this in July 2016 😍😍😍 this is probably one of the best indie songs 👌 so underrated
I cried the first time I saw it.
I'm watching this in October 2016!
November 2016! Also, no black people where harmed in the making of this video.
December 2019! future is now..
I lived with it 2013-now. Only seeing this great video today!.
Brings tears in my eyes everytime I listen to it. DCFC have some magic in their songs, this is what makes them special. You don't listen to their songs, you actually feel them. Lucky you if you like them!
Most nostalgic music ever.
Stunningly beautiful piece of art here. The drummer performance among the very best ever - so insanely good.
A couple of my viewers brought me here. Awesome tune. But now I need an entire box of Kleenex 😢
14 year old account and you never listened to dcfc very hard to believe. The postal service?
@@blakenunndrums death cab emo?
I cried a little in the end. I love these guys so much.
So many people are living this in Australia right now and my heart is breaking for all of them.
isn't it just shocking how the mainstream music nowadays only talks about drugs, sex, and partying, yet there's beautiful music like this that gets way less recognition? songs are more than just a beat. listening to the lyrics and understanding their deeper meaning are vital to amazing music.
CaptainPudz
i agree with you
mostly.
music is whatever you want it to be, simply put.
you can have it be a super happy, rather annoying clubbing song, or you could have something super emotional such as this, something super agressive such as henker, something jazzy and nice such as the reign of kindo, etc.
the thing that ties all music together is that it's art, and art is not something boxed in.
though i would wish things such as this were recognized more than such things as katy perry or pitbull.

It's something we can't really change though.
the comment of the year GOES TOO...."YOU" lol. this is true
Had to listen to this today I’m from Oregon and it’s all in flames 🔥
I'm preparing to go away for school soon, and trying to decide which of my things I should keep, and which things I should part with before I go. It's hard to let go when I attach sentimental value to the stuff I own. But then I see this video, and I am reminded that the most important things to take with me aren't things at all: they are the memories of those I love. That's all we really can take in the end.
This song hit really hard. I started crying like a baby towards the end
Well this certainly feels relatable right now as a Californian who has friends in Oregon...
Unlike a lot of bands today, Death Cab can be appreciated solely on their lyrics. Take away the music and they're like poetry =]
Deep, meaningful and moving. How anyone can claim that's not so baffles me...
Man...art says it all.
I cried the first few hundred times I heard this. Now, it just makes my chest ache and I am able to hold back the tears. Sometimes though, I let them fall cause I want to.
the first time I heated this song I couldn't hear the lyrics well on the radio, so I looked this up and... this made my eyes misty
"Billy, there's a crazy wildfire going on! .....so go outside unsupervised to go find your brother. I'm sure you'll be ok"
This song gets me. Every time.
i listened to this at like 3 am last night, it's 11 am right now, i was up talking to random people and some really cute guy online it was fun and i'm tired and i just love this song. death cab for cutie is so good.
I love this.... it actually made me cry
I love how sad songs like this one go satisfyingly cheerier when you speed them up
:-)
That ending. Made me cry.
I have goosebumps throughout the whole song when i listen to it, its so sad but beautifully written :(
Most underrated music video of all time...
Canada wildfires reminded me to listen to this song today
this made me emotional
One of the best bands of all time. Ben Gibbard is extraordinary, to say the least..
death cab for cutie could change the world

forever my favorite song and music video by death cab
This song has always meant, to me, no matter how terrible things get, if you hold onto those you love, it'll be okay, and I can concur with this with experience.
"its only a matter of time before we all burn" means "life is short". "But I couldn't think of anywhere I would of rather been, to watch it all burn away" means "being with friends and family makes this short life enjoyable, even in the face of danger".
In this five years reading comments from this video, I just found your comment now. Nice point of view, and I think along the same lines.
DCFC's drummer is so underrated ... just tossing in the purdie shuffle in a modern song like nothing is no easy feat
The shuffle is the right feel for the verses of that song. Yes, he's underrated. Shawn R.
Jason McGerr 👌
want to slow dance to this

+Jamagab My thoughts exactly
I use to listen to this song 10 years ago when I was super depressed.
