Dami has always been really accomodating with Handong's Korean from the beginning, in that she learnt how to introduce herself in Mandarin to Handong when they first met. That takes time, effort, and a lot of nerves to deal with. Where can I find someone so caring? * sad language malfunctioning noises *
I love how during their early days, they were so surprised and encouraging when Dongie is speaking
She is so cute and so smart as well. Learning a new language and being actually fluent at it is hard.
(well at least to me ) I been learning english for about 5 years and I'm still not even close to be as fluent as she is with korean. I'm really impressed by how smart Yoohyeon and Handong are at learning new languages. I really admire them 🥰

"I been" is technically wrong but it's a phrase English speakers use a lot anyway. So if you're doing that because you've seen people use it then you're more advanced than you think.
Was that Dami translating into Chinese too? She's already a secret English speaker might be Chinese too.

Siyeon just adores everything that Handong said... I just realized that Yoohyeon held that hand-stick thing up to cover Sua's chest... that's so sensible of her... from this clip, we can conclude that Jiu enjoys teasing Handong the most... but yeah, she does like making word puns so Handong is like that unlimited source of puns for her... but also, she's always encouraging Handong to talk which is good because it helps her learn faster and to be more confident in talking... i mean, look at her now. She's so confident and talks a lot more now... I do admire Handong because it is not easy to speak in another language but it might not be as difficult when she's surrounded with chaotic and talkative members. 😅
I'm familiar with European languages and Japanese, but Korean is on a whole other level. Words have multiple meanings and the slightest error in pronunciation can send you way down the rabbit hole. I really admire Handong for taking on this language in front of the Korean public and accepting the teasing from her unnies. The funniest thing is that Koreans themselves make mistakes quite often. The ultimate test is having a phone conversation in Korean. Probably why texting is so popular there.
Ah Yes, even Siyeon said the word Kimchi wrong once. Making it sound like Gomchi
Ikr, Japanese is pretty easy to learn to speak, but Korean... just Korean ramen is either pronounced ramyun or lamyun depending on the person, not even talking about lenation, batchim, all the o sounds....
Texting is a challenge too, lots of people don’t care when they make spelling mistakes - good luck finding that word in a dictionary
Mind you that’s every language; imagine someone learning English reading this comment section lol
Laughing to the point of almost crying. I love how the members don't let her feel bad about mispronouncing or not understanding something, just creating chaos most of the time. That way she won't get discouraged and can laugh it off and learn from it. Dongie is hardworking both at being an idol and at the Korean language. That makes her even more charming

There's nothing more heartwarming to me than the members instant focus on Handong when she opened her mouth and the gently teasing "Our Dongie.. said something?!" You can see the genuine care and love there. I love this for her.

Her name 韓東 sounds similar in chinese and in korean, except for the accent. You can catch the difference between the two when the members(especially Yoohyeon) call her in chinese. YH calls her "Dōng dong" which the first "dong" sounds more nasal than korean one(동아Dong-ah/동언니 Dong unnie) And that nasal sound makes it similar to 똥(ddong, poop in korean...) but still in distinguishabe way😂
The problem is.. she pronounciates her own name with chinese accent even in korean context. Then 5:29 happens🤣
1:52 This one, Ahh she's so cute. It IS wrong grammarly but that's the expression we use in casual speech to express how excited or happy we are (It's kinda slang... i dont know where it came from tho ㅎㅎ) And it shows that she learns korean in daily life, like talking with her members. It's so cute how she learned the phrase by her friends and applied it directly.
I really really appreciate how she become fluent in korean now. Her pronounciation is almost perfect! Especially when she speaks informally in Vlive she sounds like a kind older sister who takes good care of us Ssomias♡

I think that these are older times, when Handong was really struggling (as anyone would, Korean is really tough). After her return from China though, she seems to have studied hard during that time and now she has a much better understanding of the language. The Weekly Idol E522 incident is a proof of how much better she is now. On the other hand, have you seen the Chinese vlives that Dreamcatcher do, with her presiding? They're so entertaining and I'm so impressed with all of them!

She handles it so well. Thanks to that and her teasing members, her mistakes usually lead to a whole ass comedy bit. This was so fun to watch. She's so much more confident with it now. The facelift mistake never fails to crack me up because the fish filter never goes away 🤣
It never stops being cute how she frequently seems to lean over to Dami or Yoohyeon when she needs to ask about phrases since those two are also learning Mandarin. Those three are Language-exchange friend goals.
Finally a compilation of our dear Dongie just being casually funny in a non-purpose way. I think I laugh the hardest when I see her like this. I don`t speak a single word of Korean, and having her mispronounce words, and then say it correctly afterwards - korean is mental! I could not hear the difference between the correct word and what she mispronounced. Gotta love it though. Language is so much fun, and nothing is funnier when it`s used partly correct and partly wrong. All respect to Handong for trying her best, and nailing it!

Handong has grown on me more than any other member.
Handong-gul is one of my Metaphysical Dreamcatcher biases along with Yoohyeon's Smirk.
There seems to be a specific problem that Handong faces, as a Chinese speaker, which makes Korean even more difficult to master for her. Modern Korean doesn't use tones, while Chinese uses tones.
If you guys notice, the mistakes she makes all the time are because of misplaced tones, which creates a different meaning. She doesn't know where to stress the word, in the beginning or the end, so she tries. Which leads to very funny situations.
i really admire dongie for being brave and keep learning and instead of getting scared when ever she makes a mistake she laughs it out with her members, and its not a wrong thing to do and the members had her back whenever she did a mistake but the good thing they did laugh when she made the mistake to lessen the awkward moment to leave (and its normal to smile playfully together) and give dongie courage to keep on speaking korean, i myself living in another country and had to learn 2 whole different language from my mother language and i still struggle after 20 years, and believe me its very normal for friends and family to make fun of each others mistakes especially when learning it just makes things less stressful and im very grateful for it, plus dongie speaks korean better than other foreign people and idols i saw before so our dongie keep on speaking, FIGHTING to you and all people learning new language and new stuff
