I have no idea what was done by the school or who was damaged, but if the person that got the award lived in the town...did they get a tax bill too? how can that be justified for them to have to contribute to the granted win?

The govt and teachers union (if there is one) are going to claim "qualified immunity," but the courts have ruled that criminal action isn't qualified for immunity. I wonder if the school board that was in office for the cover-up, along with district administration, can be held criminals liable? If so, there might be an avenue of suing them to pay up instead of foisting it on the residents (including the families of the victims).

    • @robertmoore1215

@@kimfleury how many are actually qualified for that immunity? Cover ups are not qualified for that immunity. Obstruction of justice is not qualified. Present tense board members did not commit the crime or conspire to conceal. They're the ones tasked with cleaning up litterbugs before them. They're also being persecuted having to pay the same bill on their own taxes as the residents. What consequences should apply to people in authority who are abusing their power, or embezzling funds, or facilitating child molesters? These things need to be spelled out in legislation, but the legislators themselves may be implicated as they also enjoy 'qualified immunity' when they really ought not be qualified.

My insurance was like $175 a year and my flood insurance was like $125 Before we sold. Our taxes went up to $6000. Our homeowners insurance was like $5000 and a flood insurance was about $1500 a year . What broke to camels back with our insurance said that they needed to do an inspection because of the age of the house .we knew a neighbor down the street that had the same age house as we and they got the inspection and what they told them was, they needed to replace the hot water heater the air conditioner the electrical( because they had aluminum wire) replace sewer pipes because it was a cast-iron We got tired of every time you turned around they raised our taxes & are insurance , flood insurance so we just decided to say sell it, and we did we received half of what it was worth. Schools are required to carry insurance to cover all sorts of things, failure to educate, sexual harassment, breaches of duty, neglect, errors or omissions, sports injuries, and bullying activities of the students are among the top insurance concerns. In today’s climate, where the spotlight has been placed on the instances and failures of institutions to report, address and prevent abuse or misconduct, being hyper vigilant to the safety of all under a school’s care is extremely important. Public schools get funding from federal, state, and local taxes. They’re also part of a larger school system and must follow the rules and regulations set by the government. So, something isn't passing the smell test with how the school is handling the situation.

They are advertising seminars on how to get rich on tax liens on houses. Which means a lot of people are going to start to lose their homes. What was the last scheme? Buying mobile home parks. By Increasing lot fees 1000% they make a huge profit Who loses? Residents who own their trailers. They also eventually lose their homes. Do your homework. They are always scheming and scamming someone out of their property to make a quick buck. The classic fleecing of America!!

The vultures will sweep in. "Investor groups" looking for gentrification opportunities, mineral rights, timber rights etc. Properties burdened with large taxes, the sale cannot be completed until those tax liens are paid.
I suggest the present tense landowners need to start thinking about how to make the land pay for itself. Rental space, raise chickens, grow tomatoes, sell electricity with solar panels, hydro, or wind, thin the tree stands selling lumber or firewood. Residents may gain forbearance from the county because there wasn't disclosure enough to let people know a huge increase was coming, but that will be a temporary measure. They could have structured the settlement for them to have longer pay backs, but it will increase the bill with the interest tacked on. Late pays will have fines imposed that also jack up the total losses. Doubtful there's much of a tax break for all these increased expenses either. Federal taxes will offer the most break if you paid into it substantially.

It's awful and I'm sorry you are going through this. Our property taxes went up by $1200 this year too. And, of course, we aren't notified either or have any warning it would go up so much. We got the notice of re-assessment but had no idea it would go up that much. It could be happening all over. In our case, it more than likely is all the brand new schools and remodeling the old schools. We didn't have children and therefore had no children in the local schools and we've certainly paid our fair share since, for our own schooling. But we have had a rash of new schools and then they remodel the old schools and re-use for this, that and the other. Between the hospital and schools, they own a LOT of real estate and just keep needing more and more money to keep it all up, landscaped and new buildings. Our high school was built about 3 years ago. We were told it would only raise our taxes an average of $50/year, but, as I said, ours went up $1200. Our new high school is on a plot of land with hundreds of acres of which they have to keep landscaped. It has a huge baseball field that rivals the new league baseball field in town, huge football field (both fields replete with jumbotrons), soccer fields, gym with basketball court, acres of asphalt parking lots, an outdoor amphitheater (which is NEVER used because it's too close to the busy road and too far from the school buildings), a pond with water fountain and an auditorium. The cafeteria rivals any restaurant. They have custom buses for the football team. Tax paying citizens are not allowed to use any of the features of the school because of school violence. We have to protect the students (and I agree) so NO ONE is allowed on the premises to walk the track fields or use the ampitheatre. I used to live across from a school and I often used the track field to walk when school wasn't in session. Now it's all fenced and custodians tell you to get off school property (even during the summer). As for city services we have garbage pickup and yard waste pickup. And since Hurricane Helene we've not had ANY yard waste pickup for 3 months. They "contracted with a company to do that" and so far, they have done little of it. We had no damage from the hurricane but it's leaf season and so you can't drive down our little street in our nice neighborhood for all the leaf piles in the street! I'm not exaggerating! What gets me, we used to live on a farm and I know how low the taxes are on unimproved land and farm land. But, with the burst of population (thank you, illegal aliens) and the people moving from high cost-of-living states like California, New York, etc, our city is busting at the seams. All that empty land is being built on with lots of less than 1/2 an acre. That means 100 acres of farmland that used to be billed $600 in property taxes is now subdivided into 200 1/2 acre lots with $300k homes on them which should bring in $400,000+ (if you average $2,000 taxes per house, but it's much more now, as our own house is $7,000/year but that is city taxes, county homes are less). Yet, they can't keep up with the school building and the city services? Where is all that money going? It's not going to road improvements, etc. But your situation may explain where a lot of money is going (besides in everybody's corrupt double dipping pockets). Maybe we are settling suits also and we just don't know about it. It is really distressing to know that those of us who have worked hard, planned ahead, tried to do all the right things (and paid our taxes and bills all our lives) and they could raise our taxes so high we could still lose our homes even if we paid for them and owe no mortgage on them. I almost had one house paid for. We were real proud of that. But then realized, if they raise our taxes and keep raising them, we could lose our house because we don't have the cash to pay our high taxes. I don't want to be house rich and cash poor. I had a friend like that. She and her husband had paid off their mortgage. But he's gone and she's on a fixed income and can't afford repairs, taxes and insurance. The house has been let go so long that it's not going to bring much money if she was physically able to sell it and move. She's stuck. And, on top of that, she can no longer use her upstairs as she can't go up the stairs. She lives in half the house with just a half bath downstairs. She can't afford to have the grass mown, the toilet fixed, a new refrigerator. I guess it's better than a tent but not by much. So I quit worrying about paying the mortgage off. It's low interest and tax deductible.

Jackson County in MO raised our assessed value 194.6% last year and then the assessor claimed it had nothing to do with our real estate tax! And there was supposed to be a 15% limit annually. Then the state sued the county, but the county can't backtrack because they have already spent last year's collection!

The same is happening in Morris, OK. Property taxes went up for everyone in the Morris School district. The school had a million dollar insurance policy and the lawsuit exceeded the insurance policy. Kingfisher school district is also dealing with something similar, but they chose to let staff go instead of raising property taxes, at least according to the News on 6 report.

It's not bad enough that all the residents are being forced to pay for the bad actions of the school board members they voted for or whoever was responsible for the cover-up. It gets worse: the families of the victims have to pay increased taxes, too. So sure, they're getting whatever the lawyers don't take, but then they have to turn around and give it back to the school district. The whole thing sounds fishy.

A similar thing happened here in Nebraska. Beatrice NE cops arrested a group of 7 people in a crime and they spent several years in jail before they were found to be innocent and the county was found liable for this unjustified arrest. The 7 got a huge law suit settlement against the county and they charged the property owners with a higher property tax to pay for the negligence of these cops that arrested these innocent people.

    1. It is important to know when your respective districts are voting on school budgets, our school taxes are over $3K, property taxes are $4K (we have 13.3 acre farm), senior citizens and never had any children. The voting usually only draws about 1500 - 1800 voters for a multi million dollar budget. The population is probably around 20,000 residents. 2. The state teachers association should provide coverage through the unions, etc. 3. It should not be dumped on the laps of the remaining citizens, when the district can’t keep their teachers covered. 4. A class action suit against the the teacher and/or the district might be considered. Seems Salina lost a lot of its viable tax base with the tornado this past spring, which would put more of the burden on fewer remaining residents and businesses. Talk about punching someone in the gut when they are already knocked down. The state needs to be involved. But the same thing happens with police and qualified immunity, lawsuits end up costing the tax payers. When the money should come out of pension funds and unions. God bless!

Lawsuits should come out of pension funds and unions? Whatever 401k/pension fund values assigned to individual criminals should be forfeit to pay this suit. Again, punishing all the honest teachers is just another way to shift the blame off the guilty. Unions don't hire molesters, supervise molesters or enable molesters in any way. Unions are there for employees who are wrongfully accused, and once convicted, they are severed from the ranks. There is no get out of jail free card offered by the unions. The administrative school district hierarchy did this, and you blame the entire teaching profession.

Interesting. Our county lost a lawsuit (that they fought in court) for breach of contract, and they had to pay ten million. You guessed it…that ten million was applied to our taxes! For seven years! It was just paid off this last year. But my property taxes still went up over $100 this year supposedly because they had “under assessed” the value of my home LAST year. You said it right. Once they get extra coming in, they won’t let it go. They will find some reason to keep getting it.
