  • I made this two years ago, and am only just now posting it!
Back in 2016, not long after Kirby Planet Robobot was released, three clips of some beta versions of "Vagrant Counting Song of Retrospection" were posted to the game's official Japanese website. This song is those clips stitched together. The original clips can be listened to here: www.nintendo.c...
(Just scroll down a bit, they're the second set of sound files.)
They more than likely weren't meant to be played together in this exact way, but I wanted to see what an earlier version of this song may have sounded like.
Footage recorded by me in Citra.

When the song is so good even the prototype versions are bangers

This version is much more terrifying than the original, it makes the whole fight seem much more empty, which I feel is the perfect representation of how the battle is.

I’ve never seen that spiral animation because I’ve never seen anyone get hit by the black hole move…

Kinda sounds like a piece of Adaptive music. (Something like what Pikmin/Paper Mario Origami King does)
This sounds like a piece which would be used in the part between Star Dream's attacks, only to transition into the full normal song during its attack phase.

My favorite adaptive music is rain world’s threat themes

I think it’s both Vagrant Counting Song of Retrospection and Vagrant Keepsake of Oblivion, a lot of mixes seem to combine the two as well although I thought Vagrant Keepsake was phase 4 and Counting Song was phase 2

It's so strange hearing it like this, it sounds so similar but gives a completely different feeling from the final song.

ok but that slight change at 1:43 from the original version is so good i wish it made it into the final

Compared to the "final" version, this feels... empty. Strangely even more empty than Intermezzo Without A Leader/Virtual Space Manipulator. It's as if the song is stitched together but full of holes without anything to fill them... which is oddly satisfying and fitting if you think about Soul OS instead of just the base Star Dream.

1:35 to 1:50 might rival the best VCSOR remixes

Reminds me of the tone from the title, Soul OS's first inner phase, and even Intermezzo'. It could've been designed this way to keep closer to the empty feeling, but changed to fit a final boss. However, that's of course just one theory. Another: maybe this was more like a blueprint than a finished version?

I originally anticipated to cringe at a terrible song made of several parts of the original song, but no. This is actually a pretty good song.

its a reference to Marx's black hole and at this point its less of a "reference"and more like "this is how the attack works in this series"

A long time ago, on the official Japanese website for Kirby Planet Robobot, HAL shared a few clips of some earlier versions of this song that were not used in the final game. This is simply a combination of those clips.
From what I remember, I think I had to use some snippets of the release version of the song to fill in some minor gaps. It's been long enough that I don't really remember exactly where.
