Years ago, I got 25 White Rocks from Meyer Hatchery and those girls laid eggs year around with no extra lighting. I'm going to try Turkens this year, but I'm getting them from Murray McMurray since their weights for adult birds are on the standard, while Hoovers is 2 pounds off the standard...
@@WanderingWithTony The APA standards Turkens, recommend 8.5 lb. for roosters and 6.5 lb.for hens, cockerels 7.5 lb., and pullets 5.5 lb. It comes from which line of chickens that each hatchery has and what they are bred for. In Romania, purebred roosters average 4 lb.and hens 3.3 lb., while in Hungary and Germany roosters are 5.5-6.6 lb.and hens 4.4-5 lb.
That’s good to know- something I haven’t even thought of before. I guess this explains why my neighbors Brahamas are massive and mine only got to about 75% their size
@ And to think, you learned something from an Ohio man! Here's some further advice, don't get the Buckeye chicken, not because they are from Ohio, but because they don't like confinement and love to roam(the very reason I have never had any). Choose your chicks that meet APA Standards. If you desire many eggs for years, go with White Rocks(Meyer Hatchery). They meet APA Standards(well, they did back then)...
Y - ANN - DOT is the correct pronunciation. I've had quite a few breeds over the years, haven't had brahmas, but I've had silver laced Wyandottes. I've never ordered from Hoover's, but they supply Rural King also and I've bought them locally. I like McMurray Hatchery for shipped chicks. Probably a better deal too.
I got 3 silver laced Wyandotte , they are very quiet. When they very first started to lay, they talked about it, like cheering each other on. But after they were all three laying for 10 days. No more noise while laying .
I live in a neighborhood, so I can't have roosters. I was worried about the chickens being to loud. Now that they are here i realized the crows and other birds flying near by are even louder. I was thinking of getting only Wyandotte in the beginning because everyone say they are quite.
Called TSC, they said they will have chickens tomorrow. Showed up with my niece and they didn't have any.. so I had to do something. I went to a small farm selling chickens and bought 6 of them. 5 of them were boys 😂😂😂. Im not allowed to own roosters in the city.. I had to then by $300 pullets online. 😂😂😂 it spiraled out of control quick.
the prairie bluebell eggers are awesome great layers and personality i got an accidental roo with mine and the rooster is 1 amazing docile sweet gorgeous guy ❤ the bluebells dont all lay blue the 1 lays mint green but its a great breed i will always have them in my flock
I love the attitude of my buff brahma’s however THEY ARE LOUD especially when laying typically quite rest of time. Also egg shells no matter now much calcium you feed them will be thin super easy to break them. Eggs are huge though!
Before the egg scare l raised 40 backyard chickens egg business 😊 l have a variety of different types and getting 2 dozen a day ! You know about chickens get them if you don’t it’s not just as easy as I looks . It’s work and care and depends on how you feed .
Ameraucana and Welbars are your best bet for lots of eggs and lest noise. Welbars are half Welsummer 'one of the most chill breeds on earth' and lay dark speckled eggs. Both are friendly and interested in what you are doing. The other breeds are more high strung or bad egg layers like Orpingtons. All fluff, huge appetite and few eggs. The rest are your basic chickens. Awesome in the country but city not so much. Good Luck!
@WanderingWithTony there are usually sale barns in most states that you can bring roosters to and if you have any extra females all the better. It's a guaranteed sale and you can sometimes with rare breeds do really well at these auctions. You just have to include some info on age and breed
@WanderingWithTony also I know mcmurray has them but I don't know if they are straight run only or if they have enough in their flocks to offer seed chicks
Last time I went there to get 6 rhode island red egg layers and I ended up with 5 cooking chickens, hint hint...The single egg layer was awesome.
I’ve heard that sometimes the 90% sexing rate can be more like 50% depending on variety 😬

Where did you find info about that? I’m wondering if it all comes down to the farms that supply them with eggs

My Cuckoo Maran’s talked about it EVERY single day 😭😭 I’m hoping the Brahamas I ordered are quieter but I was torn between Bahamas and wyandottes!
@@WanderingWithTony Seems all of my birds are noisy 🤓especially early early morning 😎
@ yup it’s definitely luck of the draw 😂 and they like to be noisy when my cranky neighbors are sleeping lol

That's crazy! You got an entire flock in one day. 😂

If TS carries them this spring for chick days I may have to pick a couple of them up!
Thank you for the information. Can they mix them up buyers.👍👌🦃🐣🐓
The only way they can give you more than one breed is with an assortment pack otherwise you have to order 10 of each variety!
@@WanderingWithTony that's one good thing with mcmurray you can literally get one check of a certain breed as long as you meet the minimum

Mcmurray hatchery was doing 6
Yeah I love their hatchery as well!- they will only ship 6 chicks starting in April- which is probably a good thing
the orpingtons will meet your needs. great hens.
They are great it’s been a few years since I’ve had them but I definitely miss having them around!

Absolutely!
We just got the new Hampshire chicks. We are ordering the austrolorp. The lavender are great with kids and people, unfortunately we lost them.
I can’t find much about the lavenders online yet- New Hampshire’s are a great choice!
@WanderingWithTony I'm not sure if the stories are real, but they are expensive cause they are rare. I have a male, was hoping to breed but the cost

Hey thanks for the tip! I’ve never heard of Welbars, where do you recommend I order them from?
Crevendors are a rare breed so that is why there is not enough to offer them separately
Thanks! That makes me want to order them but I don’t want to end up with males!

The feathers on their feet get muddy in winter.
For sure- it’s a trade off I’m willing to work with though!
Or ping tons
One day I’ll get it right 😆
Enjoy your video but had to laugh at you saying I just want a good layer and quite, then you decided on their looks first. Sorry but had to chuckle.
Me too 😂😂
@Reb-w8w hey either one of those breed check both those boxes first so then it came down to looks so come on it wasn't looks first lol
