Why do all the chicken breads sound like sexual innuendos
I can't tell you how many chickens lives I've saved while being a rural route carrier in West Texas. Once a month some farmer would order chickens and sometimes they wouldn't pick them up for days. I'd illegally bring them home and put them under a heat lamp and feed them. Most times the person that ordered them forgot or didn't tell thier spouses they were coming. Most of them thanked me for taking them home an keeping them alive, others didn't care. The ones that did care leave eggs on my porch randomly. Im talking dozens lol. I just couldn't listen to those babies chirping alone in a dark box for days on end. You'd have to be a sociopath to ignore helpless animals. Great video and very informative 👍.

I watched this video 5 years ago when I was 8-10 years old dreaming about owning chickens, now I am turning 15 and building my own coop to finally be able to raise them. You seriously sparked my passion for raising chickens/farm animals and I truly appreciate that. ❤❤
How is the flock?
Awesome hun. I hope you enjoy it. We use "stall dry" in our chicken coop ( not the run). We use a kitty litter scoop to sift the chicken poop, it's super quick and clean. If you want you could do it everyday it only takes about 5 min to do our 5x5 coop! They can use it for dustbaths as well. We occasionally put a little Diatomaceous earth in with it, it helps keep them healthy. We've done this for 7 years now! Have fun and good luck! Oh, We used linoleum to line the coop floor. 😉👍
How are your chicks & coop doing Sahmiaya? We also lined the coop floor with linoleum. There is a 2-door access to clean/sweep out the coop quickly. Hoping it works well for us.
For anyone saying the video is long...we live in a culture of instant gratification. Videos are long for a reason. Esp documentary and explanation Videos.
By exclaiming videos are “long” pushes the creator to feel insecure about the content and length. It’s possible they then feel they need to shorten their videos which very very often causes them to skip important details or feel rushed.
You have control of the feed, you can speed it up or skip.
There’s no way to explain things like this beautiful video, in 10min or less 😒 please stop complaining.

Also if you don’t have the patience to watch a simple video about caring for chickens then you’re not ready to take on the actual responsibility of raising chickens which can take a lot of patience money and time.
Good point. If someone is serious about raising chickens, this video is much better than your typical 10 minute video on youtube.

To the people freaking out about feeding scrambled eggs to chicks: the eggs aren't fertilized so it's more like breastfeeding than it is cannibalism.
Charly Thompson it CAN make them get a taste for eggs, and some may begin to eat raw eggs.
@@jocelynsoria2590 That’s not correct. I feed mine and they have never touched an egg. I also feed back the egg shells to them for extra calcium. Our ancestors have been doing that for centuries. At least my grandparents did and their parents before them. They never had a problem with hens eating their own eggs. I bake mine for a few min in the oven to kill any germs that may be present and crush in a food processor till small crumble size

I fed my chicken organic feed. Oyster shells all kinds of food scraps. They loved dandelion greens. I hung corn upside down and they loved that. I used the Braggs Apple Cider too. A little bit in water. Also I made garlic tea which they adored. I boiled garlic cloves in water. Let it cool and strain. They love it!!!❤🐣🐤🐥
Here in Hawaii chickens rule the islands. They are every where. i have chickens all over in my yard. And you will find many in front of walmart, and Safeway. The chicken should be Hawaii official state bird lol

We should all decentralize the food supply for all the reasons in this video. It’s healthier, is more dependable, it’s more robust and we can all share. That goes for gardens and fruit trees as well. I used to share my fruit with the entire neighborhood for free. I grew up on home grown fruits and vegetables and I am super healthy, look young for my age and I rarely ever get sick. I am positive it’s related to home grown, natural, organic foods. Thanks to my parents and grandparents who did this for me.

5 minutes in and I'm like "ok this lady knows what she's talking about!" This is an incredible wealth of info. I've been doing urban chickens, but getting them as raised pullets, for about 5 years now. And I think I want to start going the chick route to get more interesting breeds. Don’t forget you can also adopt chickens that have been saved from factory farms. They may not lay as many eggs but it’s nice being able to give them love after a rough life.
That may not be such a good idea, birds like the Cornish cross would absolutely suffer if put into the "wrong" hands. They need a meticulous feeding schedule of the absolute bare minimum if you were to raise them as a companion b/c they've been bred so hard to just pack on pounds.
I think you guys did a very good job with this video.I don't think we really have much of a choice these days, but to try and raise chickens for at least eggs
Silkies are not quiet, at least not the ones I know. I live next to 6 of them and boy do them ladies love a good morning hello. Yes they do! Every single morning. But my neighbor is kind enough to provide me with fresh eggs and I provide her with homemade bread. Win win!
I just started chickens and there is some content that just talked about the chicks in the very beginning and then there's tons of videos when they're adults, but none that were as thorough and step-by-step as yours. Thank you for that information on this video. I really liked seeing from the very beginning and following all the way through until you release them into the yard.

Hey future chicken owners this video starts out kinda slow and you may feel like moving on. STICK with it as she presents lots and lots of excellent tips as the chicks progress through their first 8 weeks or so. I have been researching and learning for my first batch of chicks and have watched countless other videos. Lots of new information to be found in this video.
I live in a fairly cold area in the Ozarks. Winters can get down to single digits at night. I found the 2x4 with the wide side flat work best for roosts. The chicken has to sit on them flat-footed and their body rests on their feet . This keeps their feet and toes warm. I once used wooden closet clothes rods. They have to encircle the rods with their toes exposed to the cold and I had several frostbitten toes. Not a pleasant thing for the owner or chicken.

You left NOTHING to the imagination in showing just what's involved in starting out raising chicks from Newborns & their care inside your own home, to Outdoor Safety-Procedures at about three weeks old. Then up to a month old and introducing them to the secured Chicken-coop you made for them (and the Grown Hen's Coop & Run, too). 😅😅

We have a neighbor that has just hatched 15 chickens and they found out on short notice that they're moving so I now have 15 chickens that I have no idea what to do with. So I ordered a coop which will be here tomorrow and I ordered chick feed and I guess I'm jumping in head first LOL your videos are amazing and very informative I will definitely be a Avid viewer now! they're doing well so far. I have them in my sunroom. They're hyper I know that they keep me on my toes LOL but it's kind of cute watching them grow and interact with you. They definitely know who has the food. I built a little run for them out in the backyard and I'm going to start taking them out and letting them get acquainted with the grass and outside world here in the next couple weeks. My dog loves them which is good, she's a 75 lb Pitbull and she just sits by the cage and watches them while they jump all over her.
I have a pit bull, so kind to smaller creatures aren’t they, gentle ❤️

I am in the process of applying for a chicken permit and I've watched numerous tutorials on how to raise backyard chickens. I've heard a lot of great things from different people but THIS video is very informative. Not only did you explain what to do while the chickens are still babies, but you went through the entire process of what to do when you receive them as day-old chicks to introducing them to the outside world. Jamie my wife is not an animal person since we raised our chicks to hens they went from my retirement project to her babies. She even named them by personality. She has taken over.I never saw her get so involved.its great 👍
Me also I'm retired just bought 4 acres and small house barely got moved in . I went over to flea market guy had some bb old English bantams year old so I bought 3 to start off . Already started on my pen same day . Got the birds in a dog crate in the basement. Thier loving the basement nice and cool in this hot weather. I got probably 3 acres of woods so I'm building thier pen in the edge for shade . We got foxes and coyotes around so I'm putting a treated floor in thier in thier pen kinda like a deck off the ground about like a dog kennel 6x 8 . But after they've been on the place a couple weeks I'm gonna let them run in the yard in day time when I'm at home. Plus the bantams can fly lots of trees to get in in case of a yote comes calling. Gonna tie some solar lights around it. No wife here but this will help me stay occupied when it's to hot to be out on the lake fishing

Absolutely the best coverage of initiating baby chicks I've ever seen! All the things you cover are precisely the things I learned raising chicks on my own. If someone follows your lead on, they will have incredible success! They need to be taught to do everything. if you do this they will prosper. You really have gotten inside their little heads. Watching this brought me to tears and laughter at the level of insight you show. I never thought of the vinegar and other perks you gave your little guys. Well Done! Those are some seriously happy chicks! You are an awesome caretaker. 3>ps. I raised thousands of baby pheasants doing exactly this.. and only lost 4 or 5 over three years. Pen them up in minimal space the first week. yep.. brilliant!

What an excellent, EXCELLENT video! I ordered my 7 black australorps in February and I just got them today!!! I already watched your video once and got everything I needed. Getting the Gaylord box was actually not easy, but I've got it! Thankfully, my post office called me when they got it and I started up the brooder plate and got them. I then eewatched this video. Thank goodness. I set the brooder plate to 110F. After watching, I dropped it back down to 95F. I was so worried about everything I needed to know and thanks to your video, I do!
Edit: btw, I ordered my chicks from cackle hatchery and I had a feeling that they'd add in an extra bird, which they did! 😂

My neighbor on the other side of my back chain link fence is raising chickens. I feel like I'm living on a farm sometimes. The rooster crows at the break of dawn every morning and again every evening.
We live in a housing development with single family homes. The average home is on about 1/4 acre. I'm scouting out my yard now wondering if there is enough room for a small flock of chickens.
I have subscribed to your channel and hope to get some more information and insight into raising a few chickens. Especially in these tumultuous times of impending food shortages.
My grandmother came from Italy. She used to take me out foraging for dandelions and mushrooms, which she knew how to harvest safely. She showed me how to get the dandelions out with the root. She would cook the dandelions like you would spinach and roast the root, crush them up and make a tea out of it. There were others she was familiar with, having grown up in hard times in Italy that her mother taught her. It ended with her, as my mom became part of the new technological era and worked in a factory. She had no time to raise four kids and go digging around for "weeds" to eat.
I used to go with Grandma and forage, so I tried to continue the tradition, but the Army called and after that, I got paralyzed. So foraging is out of the question.
But... My 17 YO adopted granddaughter watched this video with me and was very motivated by it and said she might like to do this with me. So, we'll see.

I'm just some dumb kid (22 years old lol) but my ultimate dream is so build my own tiny home on my own small patch of property, and my husband and I have decided that whenever we get to that point in our lives, we want backyard chickens. doesn't hurt to start learning now 😊 this taught me a lot and was a very enjoyable watch. Alexis Diaz It's not as hard nor expensive as you would think. You really don't need an entire farm to raise them, a good half acre plot is good enough to raise 5-9 of them with PLENTY of room with a small coupe. You can order a pre-made coupe for a little over $200 from a magazine but a small barn/coupe about 15Lx12Wx12H is perfect. They're chickens...not ostriches.

I hope you NEVER take this video down! I am so happy my chicks passed their 3rd month birthday all 20 are healthy! One Silkie rooster went to my neighbor who was going to wait till Spring till she found out I had a 3 month old! :D So I am down to 9 Silkies and 10 Blue Sapphire hens... I would always refer back to this video anytime I get new baby chicks because it has such good advice! Here out West we have Jenks Hatchery and I was able to pick them up on hatch day directly from the Farm... They do a wonderful job providing healthy new chicks! Again thank you so much!!!!
I agree I hope they will never take down this video. So well done and especially now that so many of us are looking to be even more independent here in 2020, as we have had to deal with the covoid 19 and political nastiness. I am very grateful for all the folks sharing very valuable information to people with little or no knowledge about permaculture, raising food gardens, eggs, or meat of any sort. So many good people sharing many essential skills as they learn, experiment and inform those of us who want to be a lot more self sufficient and prepared for whatever presents itself next. Here is to all of you helping the rest of us learn without having to repeat unnecessary mistakes as we learn. Thanks to all who share the good and those willing to become more self sufficient for the well-being of all of us.

We used this method and it worked great! EcoGlow 1200, 15 chicks, chick starter and water + we used paper towels the first 1.5 weeks, then switched to pine shavings. We started adding a few drops of apple cider vinegar after 1 week and encountering some hard to deal with pasty butt. After that, no more pasty butt. :-) We add about one teaspoon per gallon of water of "with the mother" organic apple cider vinegar. Normal ACV may not be as helpful.
Works a champ :-) We did lose one on day 2.5, but we don't think there was anything we could do to save her. The rest are very healthy and active, and happy today, 2.5 weeks old and we have moved to big girl waterer and feeder. All good so far! We also ordered from My Pet chicken and they have been fantastic.
Last summer my husband and I began discussing raising chickens. Yours was one of the first videos I watched. So much great info! We are expecting our first flock in about 3 weeks. We are so *eggcited*! 😆 I had to come watch again to get a refresher. This time I felt I understood more because of all the research I've done over the last several months. I got my chickens on July 4th they were about 4 day’s old. They love their treats of pumpkin, cantaloupe, cabbage, lettuce, corn and chicken scratch.
This video was very informative. I hope the creator has enough sense to ignore all the ignorant comments from obviously uneducated idiots complaining about the length and detail. If you don't want to learn, why are you watching? And before posting comments for the world to see, you might want to learn how to write/speak properly! Your comments show just how uneducated you are. This woman did an excellent job on this video covering some basic start up tips I have been unable to find elsewhere because everyone else is only covering a few items, not everything I need to know to start. I have this saved and I will be sure to use it quite often as a reference guide as I begin my journey this upcoming spring. Those of you complaining, seriously, go back to school!

I have always wanted to have chickens-- and now I have space to do it-- This is the first video I watched to get an idea of what I am getting myself into-- and now I am even more excited! Love how you explain things-- can't wait to watch more of your vids-- and start my first coop :)
Well I learned a lot. I'm thinking of getting a few silkies. I really like the food and water on the screen in the box. There's a lot to learn things you wouldn't think of. People here are now getting chickens because of the virus. But I'm bothered by some of them not letting them out more often. I like your chicken coop/house.

You did a phenomenal job! I am buying a property with a HUGE chicken coop that has it all. I am gathering as much information that I can before I make the plunge.
