So glad you did this video on The Kinks. I have to admit I got into The Kinks later in life and to this day cannot believe how many years I missed enjoying Kinks records. But now have been slowly building my Kinks vinyl collection...it is now one of the first things I'm looking for at my go to record shops in and around the city. What a fantastic band! I'm having fun searching out all the vintage pressings I can find.
Your collection is outstanding. Keep up the great work!

    Hi Mazzy,
Thanks for telling me about this. How did I miss this. I am a massive Kinks fan. Love all the periods... Pye, Reprise, RCA, Arista. All good for me. Their music even showed up in the Sopranos.
There is no other band that comes close with operatic, themed albums. Love the early.... All Day and All of the Night... Those first Arista albums are classics....Misfits is a classic. Rock n Roll
Fantasy I think talks about me..... haha...sitting and listening to albums. Low Budget. Give the People What they want.... with Around the Dial and Destroyer.. even State of Confusion with Come Dancing and Don't Forget to Dance. That album with the lips has the songs that were featured in the Sopranos... Do It Again.... or Living on a Thin Line if memory serves.
Thanks for this overview of this genius. Now I will dig out my Kinks.
    Tino

Mazzy now we're talking, The Kinks are my second favorite group of all time , I was so into the kinks I bought all the US stereo and Mono multiple copies , all The UK pye releases in the 60s , some from other countries , Plus bought the mono box set from a few years ago, they didn't do much wrong in my book, that was a nicely done and informative video and you have a beautiful collection of the 2nd best British band that I believe gets very little recognition , man you got me pumped up, I'm putting on the musswell hillbillies tonight ... Thanks for sharing.

Great video Mazzy with some lovely orginal pressings. Beautiful. I love the Kinks too. Small Faces never made it to the USA either. Marriott had the greatest voice of all the bands back then...in my opinion, and could shred some licks to boot.

Like alot of us, I've had some bonus time to watch tubes. Thanks for showing us your collection and sharing the stories. I too spent some time playing in bands( drummer and guitarist too) and working in record shops. The Kinks music always resonated with me. When I was about 8, I scored a copy of "Set Me Free" in a rack jobbers special bundle at a Woolworths. Mom would spoil me with records as a kid if I didn't drive her crazy. Still love the Kinks and really enjoyed your video...thanks again!

Such an incredible and very diverse band!! Love ‘em!

There was a time in the late 70's where it was almost impossible to find any of the Kinks pre- "Something Else" albums in the major chain record stores (e.g. Wherehouse, Tower, Licorice Pizza). In fact, there wasn't even a compilation available that had any of their pre-1966 hits (for example, never saw the Reprise "Kinks Greatest Hits" album). The only available compilation was the "Kink Kronikles" and that starts at 1966.
By around 1980, import copies of the Kinks first four UK Pye issues began to appear and I snapped them up (three German pressings, one Spanish). Later able to find the early Reprise issues in used record stores - the only one that I don't have is "Kinks Kinkdom".

@@ronfowlermusic Yup, Kinkdom has all those great A or B sides from their 45s (Well Respected Man, Set Me Free, I Need You, Who'll Be The Next In Line, It's Alright). But along with Kinda Kinks, Kinks Kontroversy, and Face to Face, it didn't stick around in the Reprise catalog for long, becoming quickly out of print not long after its release. One of only a handful of LPs that are on my want list.

Great video and what a collection Mazzy! The three MCA albums you are missing are Think Visual, UK Jive and the live album, The Road. They are not great but better than Phobia. I believe the cover of Schoolboys In Disgrace was drawn by Mickey Finn, the bongo player of T.Rex.

Great video! The double LP comp "The Kinks are well respected men", which has all the 64-70 non-album songs (including B-sides), is one of my favorites. It should have been included in the mono boxset, which is nonetheless phenomenal. If you get these two, you're covered in terms of 60's material on vinyl.

I’m 72, been way into the early Kinks since their first American release, which I picked up as a 14 year old at the time. One important matter you neglected t o point out is the fact that, more than any other band at the time, they released some of their best work on singes that weren’t included on any of their early American albums, Many of these weren’t revealed on this side of the pond until the release of Kink Kronicles. The point being that anyone looking to pick up their early Reprise collection should not ignore this as a sort of greatest hit package Reprise put out after they left the label, for that would leave you without some of their very best work, which many of those singles were. Most were never even originally released in America, as they were issued during the time they were denied access to performing in the states.

A huge fan in the 60s from their first release on, saw them whenever they played the States during that period, including their very first appearances after their ban was lifted, a weird school gym standup gig on the outskirts of Boston & second on the bill to Spirtit att he Fillmore East. Driven out of them by the Preservation Theatrical era, hated it, actually got heavily into Jazz at the point, not returning to rock until New Wave hit with Elvis Costello, Joe Jackson, etc. Still love the Reprise Years, tho❣️

Great video Mazzy. The Kinks are a top 5 favorite bands for me. Do you not have State of Confusion from 1983? That and Give the People... are 2 of my favorites, but of course they came out in my impressionable early teen years. Here’s my top 10 Kinks albums in chronological order. Kinda Kinks, Face To Face, Something Else By the Kinks, Village Green, Arthur, Lola Vs Powerman, Muswell Hillbillies, Everybody’s In Showbiz, Give the People What they Want, & State of Confusion. “Art Lover” & “Better Things” From Give the People are great songs. What’s your opinion of those two?

  • @BaldyFella

I love The Kinks and have done since my teens (I am now 55). Never saw them live, but have seen 'Kast Off Kinks' who were great in my local town hall in a small Wiltshire town about 3 years ago. Sadly Ian Gibbons (keyboards) recently passed. Mick Avery told quite a few stories as they sung their back catalogue of hits. It wasn't just the brothers who were at loggerheads, but he and Dave just don't get on.
Ray Davies has influenced so many singer songwriters over here in UK, most notable being Paul Weller (The Jam, Style Council and solo artist) who has himself influenced (along with The Kinks) the punk bands and definitely the 'Britpop' crowd. Bands like Oasis, Blur, The Verve et al owe a lot to Ray Davies.
His songs are timeless, especially the quintessential English songs; Waterloo Sunset, Victoria, Sunny Afternoon, Autumn Almanac. Also the strong social commentary 'Dead End Street' and 'Lola' in particular. Every bit as good a songwriter as messrs Lennon, McCartney and Harrison for my money.
