- After coming back to Call of Duty after a long hiatus from multiplayer shooters, it was left in shock to see how much things changed. Monetization everywhere, not just in COD, but also in almost every corner of nearly every western AAA game. In this short video essay, I will go over how the triple A industry has become disappointing from the perspective of someone who mostly sticks to indie games and eastern developers.

For years now I've been playing AA and indie games exclusively, with the exception of titels like Elden ring and Persona 5, AAA never fails to disappoint.
Still shocks me that at least some people are willing to make actual masterpiece AAA games

I believe the kinds of games AAA pumps out today thrive on only three things:
- nostalgia (long-running IPs with solid roots)
- male peer pressure ("dude why are you playing Life Is Strange instead of a real game??")
- carefully engineered string of dopamine hits, just like in Zynga mobile games

Your reasons for not playing MP games a lot are essentially the same as mine. I had fun playing Warthunder f2p but I started feeling like I wasn't good enough and eventually it sucked the fun out of playing. Also some other factors but they only exasperated that feeling.
And good luck with the gacha grind. I did it for a bit but I don't have the energy or motivation to do that anymore. The two good things I got out of that was a love for the characters of Azur Lane and a concept for a fangame in that universe that'll probably never happen.
What you said in 4:15 is identical to what I thought many times over for the past few years. It really says something to me when I hear about the dreadful monetisation or lacklustre story of some video games and one of my first thoughts was "I have seen mobile gacha games with less forced monetisation/better stories than this."
Granted, as another commenter in the video said and with some personal awareness on the history of monetisation of video games over the past decade, mobile gaming do share a lot of blame for this - where did these games companies get the idea of the lootbox after all?
Yet it is still disappointing that many of these AAA companies are far more invested the monetisation element of these games to get rich(er) quick (on top of other poor practices) than pay attention in making a good game, let alone one with an intriguing story and world.
