    I remember when I was with the 43rd MASH in AnJung-Ri, going to Seoul on Saturdays and Sundays and going on long walks like this. Some of these walks would last 3 and 4 hours and it was wonderful. Having Korean food talking with the people I would encounter. What an experience!

    The Dutch boys. You helped me with support, encouragement and many tips about selling in the street and surviving in Seoul. My time in Korea really was some of the best adventures i ever had. Definitely one of the highlights of my life. It is great to see that you have continued to travel the world and make art through documenting those travels. Good health and good luck to you Casey. Long may you continue on your path.

      tewkewl The first hour is the Insadong tourist area and its surroundings. Well, it's not like the super expensive famous Gangnam area or commercial Myeongdong with its department stores, but its far away from being a shanty town. Actually these traditional houses in this hilly area after around 30:00 are very expensive and the location is well known with Seoul tourists.

      Before the 1980s, South Korea was pretty dirty and poor.
      South Korea is now a wealthy country, ranking higher than Japan in quality of life (Human Development Index), where-to-be-born index, and income level.

    • @高等遊民-e9o
      @高等遊民-e9o 7 лет назад +1

      Sharon Kim
      It's so nice to know Korea has grown a lot, but it's also a pity to see a Korean claiming Korea has surpassed Japan because such a contention itself proves Koreans still have a strong inferiority complex against Japan (If they had no complex, they wouldn't even try comparing. Indeed, Japanese never try to persuade others that Japan is more developed.) and thus the world keeps laughing at Korea under the condition that nobody thinks Korea is superior to Japan. Anyway, as long as I see the video, the streets in Korea look clean and modernized enough. Next achievement after material development should be quality of life and social maturity. Korea now should have an ability to make it for itself. It's not a poor country which needs Japan's support anymore. Hope Koeans become as wealty and matured as enough! Cheers!

    • @sharonkim9192
      @sharonkim9192 7 лет назад

      Teru Shibata You do not believe me?
      Human Development Index: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_Human_Development_Index
      Where-to-be-born Index: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Where-to-be-born_Index
      Average income by country by rank: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Median_income
      The world has changed a lot my friend, Korea has surpassed Japan in many areas. It is not only Korea who is surpassing Japan, it is also mighty China.
      I'm sorry if you took offence by what I said but it's the truth. Japan isn't the country that was once "richer than America."
      You do know why Korea wasn't able to compete with Japan in the 20th century right? Japan had a head start in modernizing and Japan also annexed Korea for 35 brutal years. Soon after that, the Korean War broke out devastating the peninsula.
      By the way, Japan LOANED Korea money, they didn't donate it. Korea already paid the loan anyways. Most Japanese people do not get that.

    Hi ! Kees, are you staying in Asia now ?

    • @user-ew4xd8sq5p
      @user-ew4xd8sq5p 9 лет назад +3

      Kees, I have a challenging idea about your walking in East Asia. The more developed cities in East Asia, such as HongKong, Seoul, Taipei, Tokyo, unlike most European cities, usually have lively night activities in some commercial streets, especially on holidays. So I boldly suggest you may try to walk bustling streets in these cities at night. It would be some different experience of sights in your film! However, the ever-changing lights in the night streets will challenge your video-shooting. So I just think it would be a challenge for you. And you must wear some kind of reflective clothes or some lighting, in order to secure your walking safety in traffic on dark roads. I guess it might be an interesting experience for Europeans to see bustling sights in night streets. : )

    도쿄나 오사카 같은 일본도시보다 좀 못해 보이는 부분도 있지만 그렇다고 비하할 필요까지 있을까요? 비하하는 사람들은 여행을 진짜 다녀보지 않은 것 같네요.. 서울이 그렇게 뒤떨어진 도시는 아닙니다. 그래도 굳이 일본과 비교한다면, 나도 여러 도시를 다녀봤지만, 서울의 대로변이나 신개발지는 도쿄와 큰 차이를 못 느끼지만, 아무래도 구도심 같은 곳이나 잘 안보이는 곳은 낙후하다고 느껴지는 곳이 많기는 합니다..이런 곳을 보면 아직은 일본과의 차이가 느껴지기는 하지요. 그렇다고 큰 차이가 난다든가 하는 정도까지는 아니에요. . 일본은 메이지유신 부터 시작해서 도시개발의 역사가 오래됐지만 한국은 기껏 한국전쟁 이후 60년대 시작되었다고 봐야 하니 상당히 오랜시간 공을 들여 개발한 일본의 대도시와는 차이가 있을 수 밖에 없다고 생각이 들어요. 지금 서울의 낡은 건물들은 대체로 80년대 도시미관을 고려하지 않고 이쁘지도 않게 마구 지은 건물들이 대부분이니, 그런 지역과 건물들을 본격적으로 재개발하거나 리노베이션 하게 되면 도시의 풍경이 상당히 달라질 수 있다고 생각합니다.
