I passed out and joined my first unit in February 1984 (12 Squadron in Osnabruck) shortly before this video was shot. Hated training but loved the Corps! Retired from the Sappers in 2005. Follow the Sapper!! :)
I got to Gib Barracks on the 9th of August 1984 after trade training at the Army Apprentices college Chepstow ,we had 3 instructors,Cpl Cottee, Cpl Sherrington (Sherringham? I forget, its been a long time ) and another Cpl who`s name i dont remember but who had a terrible stammer,on the first day he addressed us and said "I`m Cpl such and such and yes I have a stammer,if you want to laugh at me go ahead and do it now because if you laugh at me after today I`ll beat the shit out of you" and yeah, nobody laughed at him then or afterwards. As it turned out he was actually a really good bloke and a good instructor
I was 90-1-13 (1 and 3 regt) then posted out to 12 fld squadron in osnabruck - i also moved with the advanced party when they moved to 28 Amphibious Regt hameln.
I was 89/5. When I got my pass of video i discovered that the first half wasn't even of my training party... pass off was almost identical to this though, even with the "new recruit" with the big ghetto blaster and the barber. I thought we were being original until now :-(
Started off in 84/3 7 Toop in Cpl Mcguinnes' section but got back partied to 84/4 after 6 weeks, remember a couple of Glaswegian lads I palled up with but no names.
Beg'pardon Alan, but genuinely for academic interest - would you be good enough 'flesh-out' your comment. I did work at Gib - 90/95, combustion engineer looking after all the gas-fired plant & really enjoyed my time there. Cheers.
Hi Nigel, great stuff, thanks for putting this up, I remember your face and you'll probably remember all the beastings I got, lol. I see they've edited the bit out where I was marched off the square at the Adjutant's Parade for apparently having a dirty brassard. Yeah, I know I was a lazy b*** apart from the runs. Cheers :-)
Nigel Edmunds - I was just before this video, 83/14 under WO2 'Q' Samuels, Geordie Bramhald as the Troop Sgt. Some familiar faces (Capt Montague, and the tall-ish PTI). Am downloading the file to see if I can restore it somewhat, if so, would be interested in working on the original VHS tape. BTW, the photographer was shiite, wasn't he! He used a VIC-20 to do titles...
Argh! This looks so old...but I was there about that time.
