    The ironic thing is that if Ratcliffe had been smart, he would have realized that gold isn’t the only way to make money. He could have made a fortune in the lumber industry with those massive trees.

    • @jazzykingjack2846
      @jazzykingjack2846 2 года назад +4

      Indeed Ratcliffe was standing on a gold mine of a different variety. True the wood isn't worth much when they arrived but just think if he used all that wood for forts, fences, posts, polls, shelter for his men and trading. He would have made a fortune in lumber and wood if he played his cards right.

    "Ooh, gift baskets!" See, THIS is why I love Wiggins. Though not exactly cool and kind of naive, he definitely is friendly and sweet and has the right idea about how the Native Americans should be treated! And he KNOWS what the settlers did wrong to cause the Natives to attack them. "Wiggins, why do you think those savages attacked us?" "Because we took over their land and cut down their trees and dug up their earth." You can't get more obvious than that, and Ratcliffe is stupid enough and too blinded by greed to see that. Way to go, Wiggins!

    "During The Starving Time in December 1609 or early 1610, Ratcliffe and 25 fellow colonists were invited to a gathering with a large group of Powhatan Indians.[1] The Englishmen were promised they would be given corn in return for copper, but it was a trap.[citation needed] The colonists were given food baskets that were nearly empty, the Powhatan Indians ambushed them, and Ratcliffe was taken to the village. Only two colonists escaped.[citation needed] Ratcliffe suffered a particularly gruesome fate: he was tied to a stake in front of a fire.[citation needed] Women removed the skin from his entire body with mussel shells and tossed the pieces into the flame as he watched.[citation needed] They skinned his face last and finally burned him at the stake.[citation needed] This story was documented in an eyewitness account that is included in The Jamestown Adventure: Accounts of the Virginia Colony, 1605-1614 (Real Voices, Real History), edited by Ed Southern (published 2004). How this account only surfaced in 2004 is unknown. He was given the nickname Luckless Captain Ratcliffe.[citation needed]"

    While Ratcliffe may not be motivated by revenge (i.e. Ursula, Hades, Captain Hook) or hide behind the guise of religion (i.e. Frollo), his greed does become all-consuming. It is interesting to note, though, that David Ogden Stiers, the actor who portrayed Governor Ratcliffe, also provided the voice of some other memorable Disney characters (i.e. Cogsworth, the Archdeacon in HoND), as well as starring in a more obscure live-action Disney film titled Iron Will.

      While Ratchliffe is jerk, I think the way he is portrayed in the movie, he is pretty mellow for his time. For ex. he spares Thomas after he accidentally almost shoots Ratcliffe. in real life that would have lead to court martial, accident or not. He's still not a nice guy by any stretch of imagination by today's standards but real life 17th century governor would have been much much much worse. And I actually like him as a villain, despicable though his methods may be, I can relate to him in his lust for gold (I'm a greedy freak as well :) ).

    This man put his fellow man through arduous work for metals (gold), had people killed because he saw them as inferior or different from his ideology(his attempted murder of the native Americans), and constantly referred to them as heathens out of some belief on religious superiority. I guess he is the representation of the dark nature of powerful civilizations or elitist groups.

    This is quite possibly the biggest case of slander in movie history. John Ratcliffe was not an evil, greedy, genocidal lunatic, but rather very generous in his dealings with the Powhatan Nation. Too generous, according to some, and among his real-life faults was also the impractical idea of building a large residence for himself in Virginia. It is ironic that he met his death at the hands of the Powhatans, who led him and what remained of the colonists (the others having all died from illness) into a trap, flayed him alive, and burned him at the stake.

    Pocahontas pretty much saved the natives from getting demolished and slaughtered. The settlers had cannons, muskets, and armor. The natives had bows and blunt weapons. With just bows for range, ratcliffes armor and the settlers helmets would have countered them. The natives would have been screwed.

      Thomas was under Gov. Ratcliffe's radar when using the gun and ordering him around on what he was expected of the governor pressuring him doing things that's not in his nature. Finally at the end of the movie, Thomas stands up to him and have his say while seeing John Smith being shot at the same time. What a friend! He deserves to be leader.
