- This is a tribute to Disney's 30 most popular villains. I did not make this list up and I don't agree with it. I personally think Hades is the number 1 villain. Please enjoy and leave a comment.

I see a lot of people are complaining about Frollo only making number ten, but actually, I think that's a really great place for him. Since the list was conducted via a survey of the most popular villains, obviously, Disney's most marketed villains are going to be our top ten. However, considering how scarcely Disney acknowledges Frollo, it's a true testement to his character that a villain so undermarketed would be able to get such a high spot.
Although Shan Yu should have been way higher, excellent choice for #1....I knew from the start she would be in the top 3. Marvelous video.
Ratigan, Frollo, Hades and The Horned King should be way higher up there! Agree?

I personally think Scar should be number 1 villain. Scar killed his brother, and then tricked Simba thinking he was the one who killed his father so he could take the spot as king. He then made Simba flee into exile and abandon his identity as the future king.

Sid is one of my favorites. He may just be a punk in the real world, but to a bunch of toys he's a real badass. When Sid was "playing," no toy was safe, until Woody teamed up with the mutants, rescued Buzz, and took...Sid...down!
I love this list but I'm shocked that McLeach didn't make it on to this list. He's one of my favorites and I thought he might have been on here 😅

My favorite Disney villains are The Horned King, Hades, Frollo, and Barbosa. I love Villains, they're always the ones that make the story fun.
I'm really glad you brought up Sykes and McLeach, I think also Alameda Slim. These 3 are great villains are severely underrated and often forgotten.

Hades should be top 5 imo. He is way scarier than the normal Disney villain...he's more like a comic book villain. He doesn't just go after the hero, he goes after the people the hero loves most and forces him to sacrifice for them.
My favorites were Scar, Gaston, Frollo, Oggie Boggie, Dr. Facillar, King Candy, Jafar and Maleficent.
Gaston, Captain Hook, Ursula, Dr. Facilier, Maleficent, Cruella de Vil, and Jafar are my favorites.

Well said, when you put it that way i can see him making the cut. I suppose the fact that i recognized his voice (winnie-the-pooh), and the scarier shere kahn, just made it harder for me to be afraid of kaa.
Love the list. Huge Disney fan myself :) Definitely side with those who say Maleficent deserves #1. She is just evil. Plain and simple. There is no true driving force behind her being the way that she is. She is jealous of no one, isn't power-hungry, nor full of greed (like the cases of Scar, the Horned King, Evil Queen, Lady Tremaine, Hades, etc.), she is just evil. I must say she has been one of my favorite villians from one of my all-time favorite movies. FANTASTIC List yet again! :)
I'd guess people voted based on criteria like these (in no particular order). "This villain ..."
1. Is in my favorite Disney movie (as mentioned).
2. Does despicable things.
3. Is unabashedly diabolical.
4. Is hilarious.
5. Scares me to death.
6. Is realistic and/or well developed.
My top choice: Shan-Yu. He chills me to the bone and makes my blood boil, all in one film.

Ursala is one of my favorites cuz shes so freakin awesome!! But on the evil scale I would put Cruela Deval as nuber 1 cuz she wanted to skin and wear puppies. how more evil could u get?
5. Oogie Boogie
When even the Halloween monsters are terrified of this guy, you know he's doing something right.
4. Frollo
Earns points for being so hauntingly realistic.
3. Jafar
Jafar was so awesome because he never gave up. I mean, he loses the lamp, two minutes later he has a new plan to be sultan.
2. Hades
Hillarious + Badass + James Woods = Awesome
1. Scar
Unlike the others, Scar actually succeeded in his plans, and became the king. Definitely the darkest Disney villain ever.
My favorite villain (not on this list) is Dr. Facilier from princess and the frog. My favorite that is on this list is Scar from lion king
No matter how many famous villains exist. I just LOVE THE HORNED KING! He is scary, dark, powerful, has an amazing voice (John Hurt = Hero), cold, greedy, ambitious, strong, serious, silent (But gets angry easily), doesn't like when things don't go his way, and especially wicked, cruel and unobtrusively sarcastic! The Black Cauldron was the first Disney Movie I have seen, so it's hard for me not like the Horned King (And the other characters)
Villains are better than the heroes, thumbs up!
not sure I agree with Malificent being number one, but definite respect for having Ratigan, Prince John and Shan-Yu on this list (hell, each one is awesome in his/her own way)

Her horns, sadistic laugh, green complexion, that raven, her cold chilly voice (same voice as Lady Tremaine, that Eleanor Audley is amazing!), her dragon form, her creepy castle, and the fact that she's so proper, calm, and polite, while everyone is terrified of her.
Frollo was 10?!?!?!
He killed a mom, tried to kill a baby, he was racist, he tried to kill an innocent family and the knight who saved them, he pushed a priest to the ground, he fell in love to a girl who was a gypsie, so he tried to kill her if she didn't like him back and finally he doesn't have magical powers like the stupid malefishinget or whatever.
Frollo and scar and Ratigan are my top 3. Then hades
"A little girl will be missing her dolly *smirks*" That. Was. Awesome. That line made the movie for me. Yeah Scar happens to be one of my favorite characters of all time, I just enjoyed watching the metamorphosis from apathetic brother to this cruel thing, that hardly resembles any kind of villian I had ever seen before. Cruella De Vill was awesome, though, to me she was more of just mean spirited bitch then she was true Villian.
Alright! This was a pretty good list! All my favs were on the top. You know who I never see in these lists though? Percival C. McLeach...the bad guy from rescuers down under...but maybe it's because he really never achieves anything....?
Actually, he wanted to kill the Beast because he was his love rival. He just manipulated the townspeople into believing he was dangerous because he was jealous of him.
Hades is my favourite, he's not as scary as maleficient or frollo but was the only one that i really liked to watch. I think Frollo should be 1st

Aaand I may as well share my personal favorite villains as well. Scar, Zira, Frollo, Shan-Yu, and Mother Gothel are my favorite Disney villains. I also like Lady Tremaine, and the rat from Lady and the Tramp is very respected, being the only villain that still freaks me out besides that bat in the GMD and the Horned King (and I like rats usually!)
Demona from "Gargoyles" is the best Disney villain ever. She's got the back story, personality, venom, spite, intelligence, ability, characterization, tragic quality, and is so well fleshed-out and developed...WHY IS SHE NOT EVEN ON THIS LIST?!
I love how you put the years these movies were released. Isn't it great to be able to watch a movie from 1967 in 2011?
Yes, Jafar's appearance is very similar to Maleficent's, so that could make for a good pair. I also think, however, that she could be paired up with Hades. He's in charge of the Underworld, and she's the Mistress of all Evil, so that would make for a rather villainous couple. Also, Hades could act as a sort of smooth-talking comic foil to Maleficent's wicked designs.
My favorite villains on the list are Scar, Hades, Jafar, Kaa, and Shere Khan!

Not bad, but here's who I think should be on the top 5 & why (if you don't mind me suggesting).
1. Judge Claude Frollo
Reason: Psychopath of killing innocent.
2. The Queen
Reason: Psychopath of trying to kill stepdaughter to be the most beautiful.
3. The Horned King
Reason: Trying to bring death & darkness to the world.
4. Cruella de Vil
Reason: Kills animals for their fur.
5. Madame Medusa
Reason: Ruthless treasurer hunter that kidnaps a little girl.
As much as I love all of these movies, I am surprised how often I forget over half of this list existed.
@padlock23: I think Running Wild fits Barbossa, they do sing about pirates after all :P
The Horned King is OBVIOUSLY the most horrific of ALL Disney Villians. You cannot honestly say that he didn't scare you as a child
Scar is popular because he was in a movie that made tons of money and is more recent than the sleeping beauty. In reality, Scar is a weak villain who relied in trickery to get what he wanted and in one on one combat vs his brother he would have been destroyed. Malefient was a whole new level of evil.. they needed 3 magical farries, a prince and a sword of truth (dozed in magic) to beat her and only because she got cocky... she is the best by far.
I put Frollo at the top of my list. Sure, he doesn't do magic like most of the good villains, but that's kind of one of the reasons he's so great, and WAY more evil than the others.

As much as I loved the Disney villains when I was growing up, I do wish they'd try something new with them.
Like a villain who redeems themselves or reconciles with the main hero/heroine of the film. Someone who didn't have to end up dead or banished or whatever at the end.
But no. We can't have anything outside of the usual black and white views of good and evil for kids these days.
Still, at least these guys were badass.
I find it interesting that although this list is based on votes, Chernabog managed to land on the unlucky number... Ain't that just a crazy coincidence?
Someone's been watching the Nostalgia Critic :) But yeah, totally, Maleficent's motivation may have been really simple, but her style makes up for it.
CRUELLA DE VIL of cousre.. the ultimate and most popular villain! Shes not just a fictional villain.. shes a whole lifestyle...fierce,stylish, and wicked!

Cruella has got to be my favourite disney villain. She wanted to skin 99 innocent puppies just for a fur coat. Thats pretty evil. Frollo and Scar are also pretty awesome :)

Maleficent was always my favourite Disney villian growing up :) She looked awesome, her voice was awesome, she could turn in to a freaking DRAGON, she really was the Mistress of all Evil (like you said, cursing a child to die at the age of 16 just because she didn't get invited to the birth celebration? Ouch!,) and that scene where she lures Aurora up the staircase as a ball of green light always creeped the hell out of me!!!
I did not realize that The Rescuers was that old. Anyway. Maleficent deserves the number one spot. She curses a baby because the parents didn't invite her to the baby shower. Definatly hardcore evil.
Yzma and Frollo and Hades should have been closer to number one. In my opinion, at least.

I agree with this ranking. Only thing I'd do is scoot the the Evil Stepmother a couple notches up. She was always one my top favorites
scar should be #1. he killed his own brother. tried to kill his nephew 3 times, organized a revolution to do so, destroyed his homeland, and in the end was done in by his own subjects. in brains, brawn, power, hatred and over evil in greater than any other
I agree. Maybe I look for different things in a villain. I look for characteristics that are truly evil and Frollo provides just that. Not saying that all of the other villains aren't evil, I just think they are not as evil.
Whoa, Frollo's number ten? Hades' number eight? HUH? More like tied for number one!
But I was pleasantly surprised at how high Gaston ranked, and the others were all pretty fitting.
My top five is probably 1) Maleficent 2) The Wicked Queen 3) Scar 4) Hades 5) Frollo. Maleficent always creeped the hell out of me, I had nightmares of her and so The Wicked Queen. Scar scared me too and Hades was just awesome. I never understood Frollo but he was so scary and should probably be in the top three but yeah... Maleficent deserves number one.
Jafar will always be my favorite, with Scar a close second. Why is Shan Yu so far down though? He's just so fabulously understated for a ruthless leader of the Golden Horde. I love how he's brimming with personality and dark humor.
I can understand why Maleficent would be ranked number 1, as she is, according to various sources, the personification of true evil. However, the same thing can be said of Chernabog, which makes it puzzling that he had a much lower ranking.

Claude Frollo has the best song. And was the first Disney villain to put a curse word in a children's movie. Which is why he is one of my favorites.

Thanks for sharing! Here's my opinions: A) Maleficent and Chernabog would be top 2. They stand out from the rest of group because they have no motives and no comic relief...just pure evil to the core. B) Yzma and Prince John wouldn't be ranked so high, as I spent too much time laughing at them to be disturbed by their evil. C) Kaa on the list? Kaa?? Might as well throw in Lefou!
i agree with A and B. Not C. Kaa was generally creepy, you get a pedophile vibe from him and he purposely lured an emotionally hurting boy into his clutches so he could eat him. That's definitely villainous. The snake gave me shivers(good god his singing voice) as a kid and as a parent my mom said it's those types of people she worries i'll encounter in the world. He connects to real life fears,him getting beat up aside(if that's why you're so surprised by it). He deserves a spot.
You just forget Edgar from "The Aristocats" (1970) and Bill Sykes from "Oliver & Company" (1988)
I always found the horned king the most scary and intimidating villain. He has no empathy what so ever. just plain evil
Gotta say, Ursula from the little mermaid is my favorite by far.
Scar is definitely number one in my book, followed by Jafar and Hades.

I had a feeling that Maleficent would be #1. I like her, though, so I'm not complaining. However, I'm really glad that Shan-Yu's on this list. My favorite Disney villain ever! (Horned King and Jafar make a close 2nd and 3rd, respectively.)
I agree that Maleficent should be #1. Her aura screams darkness, though Hades should be #1 for charisma.
She didn't do it only because she wasn't invited , she also did because she hated aurora.
Prince John is my favourite villain which I named my cat after and Gaston is my second favourite cause I like him for his singing

Shere Khan,Frollo,The horned king,and Shan Yu has the scariest theme song.Chernabogs song is very creepy,but it's not his own,it's a night at the bare mountain by the marvelous composer Mussorgsky.
Frollo and Maleficient are most villainous from all. Behind them Evil Queen, Zira, Scar, Ursula, Jafar, Facilier and lady Tremaine.
I've never really understood why Chernabog is considered evil. In his segement he just reminded me of a party animal. The ghosts came to him to have some fun. He just LOOKS evil. As for Scar, he deserves the NO.2 spot not Jafar. He IS based on two of the worst villians of all time: the uncle in macbeth AND the egyptian god of evil Seth.
Most of the Disney characters have tried to kill the hero or their friends, but few have succeeded. I say Scar- 1 Hades- 2 Cruella-3. But that's just me. Malificent and The Wicked Queen are only at the top because everyone's heard of them... they're in the classics.

I knew Maleficent would be number one. She deserves it. But the music for her should've been "Battle with the Forces of Evil"
And Barbossa's music should've been "Swords Crossed" from the Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl soundtrack
My favorite Disney villains in this video are Kaa, Mad Madame Mim, Pete, Stromboli, The Honed King, Professor Ratigan, The Queen of Hearts, Yzma, Chernabog, Share Khan, Gaston, Hades, Cruella De Vil, The Wicked Queen, Jafar, and Maleficent.
for those of you who may not have seen the movie, I feel like a significant evil has been forgotten in the onslaught of disney devils... Hexxus from fern gully is by far one of the most mentally disturbing concepts of evil that i remember scaring the shit out of me when I was young to this day it reminds me of dependancy and addiction to energy through crude disgust of mans creation the toxic love of slime and sludge hexxus is in my books a real life villian made into fiction for todays youth

@JenkinsAnt I agree. He was the most evil of all the villains, prejudiced and using religion and law to cover up his truly evil nature. He was so consumed in getting rid of gypsies and getting Esmerelda despite her rejecting him that he nearly destroyed Paris for it. Second after him should've been Scar because of how conniving he was with Simba and the Hyenas to be the King of the Pridelands.
It would have been better without the music. I would rather listen how well the actors did cause their performance really make the characters come alive. Would make it easier to compare. My own personal favorites are Scar and Hades.

Tbh Scar is my favourite villian but in terms of being pure evil I would say The Horned King is the winner.
