    Great and helpful video. Thanks. I just bought a '95 Suzuki Carry at auction through Japan Car Direct: 4wd, 5spd. The JCD agent, Mike Nguyen, was spectacular, and the truck is on the boat as I write this. I hired EasyISF, who filed my ISF 10+2 form, to act as my import broker and handle all the CBP paperwork. They charge a modest fee, about $90 (plus port fees and duties), to do it. Worth it to me. It's been a great experience, I got exactly what I wanted, and will save a bunch of money. But patience is definitely needed!

      Glad I could be off help.. Congrats on the carry! Kaeru is glad to see his brethren name it over🙂. EasyISF did my 10+2 also I just did the rest.. Yeah I've heard all sorts of ranges on the broker fees. I'd be very interested to hear what the totals are and see if it's in line. I'd for sure prefer to have someone else handle all this if it was reasonable. Thanks for watching!

    4 weeks for the "DMV inspection" which is pretty much comparing the VIN with the number on the registration. As Will Rogers said, "Be thankful we're not getting all the government we're paying for."

      @inkandpistons  2 года назад +3

      Yeah pretty ridiculous... And on top of that trying to explain to them why I needed them to give me a temp plate so I could drive it there to get it inspected because otherwise it would be driving without a plate 🤯

    The paint stripes in the video around 6:00 are test stripes the DOT uses to test how paint mixtures hold up over time vs traffic. They put them in the right lane to get more wear on them (with 18 wheelers having more axels and weight) so they can monitor how they wear down over time/use. They will come take a look and once they determine the best one, they will mix paint accordingly to use for road striping.

    Very nice! The 2wd versions always seem very well kept.
    I bought a 1996 Carry at auction through Japan Car Direct. 30,000km 4wd. Almost as nice. I spent about 3300 total to port of NY.
    Titling has gotten squirrelly for kei trucks now in PA! Fingers crossed I should be “grandfathered” in an get a road legal title.
    My wheels are 1995 VW from a golf. 14x6. Bolt pattern is 4x100mm.

    20:10 - The 25% tax is the "chicken tax" on light trucks. It's automotive manufacturer protectionism. So is the requirement that all used cars imported into the US must be 25 years old or more. It's a racket.
    Thanks for describing the process in such painful detail and the associated costs. That was very useful. It seems like the sort of process where half of the hassle is learning what to do, and it would be very easy to show up at customs, or the port, and some bureaucrat tells you that you need a TPS report and a DD7 form, and that's going to take another two weeks while the vehicle storage fees start to mount, and another round trip to the port. I hate bureaucracies.
    Kaeru is a very clean looking truck. I was particularly impressed with the seller making a video including driving over the camera to show the undercarriage. I'm very sensitive to frame corrosion. For kei cars that will be driven where the roads are salted, please spray the undercarriage with Surface Shield or another lanolin based anti-corrosion treatment. Ethanol gasoline in the US might be a problem for these older kei cars.

So generally speaking they're usually very very well maintained. I have seen ones with 60,000 miles that look almost as nice.. and in general I feel like nobody over there is out to scam you. any idea what FL forms you may have had to fill out for the dmv or DOT? I figure it will need an in-person inspection so we may need a temp tag or just to load it on our trailer and bring it down, but the actual form for the registration we can't find (or not sure which one lol)

      Hey man that's awesome to hear. thanks for putting the trust in the process I laid out.. yes you will likely have to get it inspected by the DMV. In palm beach county only one of them did that actual inspection. so i took a month to get the appointment. i went to a tag agency and they arranged for a temp tag to take it there and handled most of the paper work. but it may be easier to just trailer it. I think the process is you need to bring the translated title and the same paperwork you would fill out for an out of state car.. and the customs forms, i think if you make an appt at the dmv they will fill out the form with you because they know what they need.. (don't make me swear to that) Just bring a little packet of all the papers you have everywhere you go.. you'll of course need proof of insurance, bill of sale, and i think this form.www.flhsmv.gov/pdf/forms/82040.pdf . but maybe just call them when you book the appt and see if there is anything else.. Good luck!!!

    • @inkandpistons
      @inkandpistons  Год назад +1

      It takes about 24 to 48 hours for customs to clear the vehicle from the agricultural hold. Basically to make sure there's no foreign soil or contaminants on the vehicle. Once that happens, you have 10 days from the vehicles arrival to pick it up without incurring any extra fees from the shipping or lading company.. that may differ from company to company, but that's what my shippers rules were. So usually somewhere between day 3 and 10 you want to get your vehicle. The one I just picked up had one extra day on it so it was $25 storage fee.

    • @inkandpistons
      @inkandpistons  2 года назад +2

      yeah, more or less.. I'm rounding some of these numbers the truck total price might have been $3,085 to port or something like that. the $200 PayPal/processing fee went to carfromjapan also. I could have sent a wire transfer I think that wouldn't incur that fee in the wire transfer would have had its cost from my bank. but I felt slightly safer sending it through PayPal with my credit card. so basically they got about $3,200 and everything else went to the other agencies and companies.
      everybody that I've helped through this I always tell them to plan on an extra couple hundred dollars here or there depending on everything shakes out for your individual vehicle

I've heard of a few people putting 2-4 trucks in a container for the same price as 1 roll on roll off boat.. . but then you have to deal with the logistics and port unloaders and the time to receive the car is probably doubled and now you have 4 cars to deal with..

    Are you sure you truly had to submit an ISF 10 + 2 form. Those forms are only needed if you had the car within a container. You said it yourself, you used the RoRo method which is not a container.

      Yes, it is absolutely required. That's not to say you didn't squeak one past the goalie.😉 .. not doing it you (potentially) could be delayed and fined, but perhaps it's more trouble than it's worth to them to flag the average importer, so maybe they just bust enforce randomly or if someone is abusing it... I might risk it on a kei truck but not on a GTR.😂

    • @inkandpistons
      @inkandpistons  7 месяцев назад +1

      Short answer. You'll be fine they push the trucks because they are the best sellers.
      Long answer:I have a follow up video about my van ruclips.net/video/Ed_aY1pjzik/видео.html explaining that the quality of the vehicles and the process kind of varies between the sellers on the site. My experience buying the truck was way better than the second time buying the van. I actually have another video coming in a few weeks from when I went to Japan and visited the dealer I bought this truck from (Mitsui they are awesome). But overall, I think you'll be okay. You shouldn't have a problem getting the vehicle. The question is what kind of condition it's in. I don't think any of the sellers are outright trying to lie you. But, sometimes it's hard to tell what condition or how mechanically fit the vehicles are. One of the dealers that I dealt with provides videos of the cars running and driving and stopping and that makes a big difference in trusting what you see will be usable.

    • @inkandpistons
      @inkandpistons  2 года назад

      They are considered antiques at that point. Realistically i think it's to not compete with the new car market... he auto manufacturers are held to higher standards of safety and emissions. The antiques are generally not subject to the same rules, and other countries rules may be even more loose.

    • @Liberty4Ever
      @Liberty4Ever 2 года назад +1

      Americans are not allowed to import used vehicles newer than 25 years old because weasel car manufacturers have good lobbyists and they're in league with the crony federal government. The 25% tax on light trucks is another weasel protectionist racket that is also very anti-consumer. It's called the Chicken Tax, because it was a retaliatory tariff in response to the tariffs on US chickens sold at low prices on the European market post WWII when European chicken production wasn't large scale and they couldn't compete, but we still have the chicken tax on light trucks to protect domestic auto manufacturers. That's why we can't have low cost light trucks in the US, as they have in Japan and many other countries.
