Thank you, awesome video! Can you please do a video now on the best/recommended devices and brands to use for a local controlled smart home?
I’m slowly trying to go local for everything. I’d like to also replace voice control with a local solution as well but that will probably be one of the last lines I cut. Thanks to Home Assistant and people like you this has become a reachable dream.
That's awesome, glad I could help!
have you found a local voice assistant yet? i think mycroft is worth a look.
Just throwing it out there, Google Assistant supports local fulfillment with HomeAssistant so it can talk with the device directly instead of using the cloud
@@nickmowen is this something that needs to be opt-in? I've been using Home Assistant and Google home for years and even recently, voice fulfilments from Google Home to HA are very slow despite the HA controlled devices all being full local. All other HA to device controls are instant
Switch to Hubitat. It is completely local and has no cloud to go down.
Slowly making the swtich from SmartThings to Home Assistant. Getting each configuration set-up for all my existing devices has been time-consuming, but I know the end product will give me more control and more robust served up locally.
my favorite video of yours... this is so important to educate users!!!! now we just need to make sure they know which products are on which side of this fence. I would add one more big reason that you didn't go over... and that is CONTROL... ultimately, if your device is a cloud device and it is controlled by some other entity (including updates whether you want them or not), then you don't truly own that device and you don't control its behavior. If you want to be in control of your devices, you need ones that allow you to decide when they get updates, how they are configured, whether they are allowed to talk on the internet, etc. Thanks again for a super great video.
Great video! I'd love to see move videos on which devices have local modes on them. It's quite hard to find some products unless you already know about a brand for example.
Tuya V2 looked like the final piece of the puzzle for me to go completely local, now they've changed their mind and local isn't high on the priority list. I've reverted to retro fitting tuya based devices with chips that can be flashed with tasmota if they don't come as such out of the box. Great video very educational, keep it up 👍
Hi Steve, i have also a lot of tuya devices i like it because it just works and price is right and there are a lot of different devices. I can solder but not really program, my head will explode if i try so, but do you think that if i try to set up a vlan network and acces it with a vpn it is secure enough? Or don't you have any experiences on this? So no home assistant or so but just tuya and then keep the devices in a local vlan
Thank you, I've been wanting to build local smart home system for years but haven't found a whole lot of information on it. I have very few smart devices, mostly for novelty.
Thank you for these great videos! One question, off the shelf hubs are opting for edge computing, making them work locally and without the cloud. Would be interested to hear what you think about this, any disadvantages or advantages when compared to a local hub.
Would love to see a video covering a home router using OpenWRT so can setup things like different vlans for smart home devices and everything else, and a 4G dongle connected as a failover incase the internet goes down your security system can still alert you.
Great videos as always.
Thanks, I'll look into it!
me, i haven't used a router for 2 years now. thats when i bought some unifi equipment and a DSL modem, and i don't regret it.
@@mrxmry3264 Does it have 4g failover?
@@faux_hobo you need a separate device to make a connection to the 4G network, but i'm sure it can automatically switch over when the main connection fails.
@@mrxmry3264 Hence why i'm looking at routers with OpenWRT. Your solution works for you, but not for me.
Agree with all of this. I'm using myenergi for my EV charger / energy monitoring and their cloud has been awful lately, keep waking up to my car not having charged. Really wish they had a local API. I knew it when I bought though, just couldn't find any better alternative here sadly
That's really not ideal! Hope you find a solution soon!
can you detail what platforms/device manufacturers are local vs cloud controlled so that we have an idea where to start looking? thanks for your help, great videos as always
Your timing on this video was perfect! AWS, Cloudflare, and Google had a brief outage today 😅
Agreed 100% on all counts though. Latency, reliability, and control are the main ones for me personally. Cloud latency is very noticable in automations with motion sensors, light/switch groups, etc.
It is worth noting that some devices can run locally and in the cloud simultaneously (Meross has an HA integration that controls locally without removing from the cloud, for example). Flashing firmware or replacing devices that are perfectly good other than not supporting local control can be a bit time consuming and expensive, so it's an option worth looking into for some devices. I'm almost done with my slow migration over to local control, still have a few old Tuya devices that I haven't gotten around to swapping out yet.
Haha I had nothing to do with that, I swear! 👀
Good to hear your experience!
Reliability could also be an issue with a local platform. More then once I have updated home assistant after which things stopped working or even ha not starting up anymore.
@@sygys Fair point, but at least the issue is in your hands, and you're not stuck waiting for a cloud outage to end. Read the breaking changes before updates, run on reliable hardware, always have a backup (for HA, but also in general).
Hi I really enjoy you videos and I'm currently trying to pass all my smart devices locally to a rasberry pie.
Unfortunately, currently it is really hard to get rasberry pie (out of stock). Do you have a video where you explain the process to do it in a always on old laptop?
Great video as always and hitting all the main points.. Keep up the good work my friend..
Thanks dude, hope you are well!
You are the best, thanks for your videos
You are the best Alejandro!
Do you have a post of everything that can be done 100% local?
I’m definitely considering moving to Home Assistant and being as local as I can be. Thanks for the great video!
Glad to hear it, thanks!
What LED GU10 lights would you recommend? Learning a lot from your videos.
I started off with most of my devices being cloud controlled, but it only took one major AWS outage for me to change my mind. After this, I started to slowly replace my cloud devices with a local ZigBee HA setup. In fact, I'm getting a Zigbee switch in the mail today, to replace one of my cloud wifi switches from Wyze. I am extremely happy with the local control and will not be going back to cloud. It would be really nice if there were a voice assistant that worked locally as well - maybe there is? But that is is one of the only places where I see these cloud companies have complete control.
Good to hear your experience!
I agree voice is one of the only downsides if you like voice control, there is a couple of local voice solutions that seem promising and will hopefully get better over time!
@@EverythingSmartHome can you do a video on the different options? i know a few speech synthesis solutions but only one speech recognition package: mycroft. check it out.
A great, well balanced video, as always Lewis, thank you! 🙂
Thanks Rob 🙌
Thanks again, absolutely love your videos
Thanks my friend!
my thermostat does its job, but if I poll it too often it they block me. the finger to honeywell... what would you recommend I replace it with, I want to poll it for status/temperature/humidity directly, not online.
Depends on your setup I guess, I use a Sonoff relay and home assistant for mine personally but that might not work for you
I approve of this video. My rule of thumb is don't overdo the technology in your life. Pick your tech intentionally, and make sure it serves you rather than someone else.
Very nice video!! Video tips: best/my platforms local devices/platforms would love this. Trying to go more local.
Thanks!
The issue I ran into was I couldn't open my garage. We went on a walk, and it was getting dark, starting to rain, and extremely hot. So we were stuck out there waiting for MyQ. Had to call my parents to open the door for us.
Great video!! Just one question, is it possible to have a local HA and NabuCasa just to set up Alexa? I've been binging through your videos about remote access and most of them require port forwarding and I just can't do that, so it seems I'm forced to subscribe to NabuCasa.
Thanks! Yes if you can't port forward then Nabu casa is an excellent (and much easier!) Way to get Alexa
I am currently in the transition from cloud to local. In my country internet connection is not guaranteed. So moving to local is the logical step.
Do you utilize vlans for your IoT devices?
I’m setting up my smart home.
Everything is controlled by home assistant running on a computer on the second floor.
If I want to use zigbee devices on the ground floor for example, how do I get the zigbee around my home?
I want something that is compatible with every device using zigbee, not just from one company.
And I need to cover the whole house.
Can you give some advice?
Thanks in advance🙏
Hop into the discord server I'm sure we can sort you out
Any good cameras that do AI / people detection on device instead of cloud processed? I have extremely limited internet where I am.
Reolink have several, Unifi G4 but pricey.
Definitely going local as much as possible!
All decent points. I'd like to have seen at least some cursory discussion of the drawbacks of a local only system (voice assistants (Alexa) are a big part of my home automation and can't be local. similarly you can't do as much with geofencing if you're entirely local (yes I'm still using life360 as I feel the benefits outweigh the privacy issues. My home will alert me if any of my family arrive at the local hospital, for instance.)
Some solutions don't have a local option at all (though I'm hopeful that issue will reduce as Matter and thread start to take hold). Ring doorbell recording, for example.
Thanks for listening :)
Thanks!
The only drawback I see is voice as you mentioned (although there is some local voice projects coming up that seem promising and voice can indeed be local) but I don't personally use voice, and remote access is less convenient but still 100% possible with local. Geofencing is possible with local control too without Life360.
Cheers!
Great video
Thanks dude!
Hello! Thanks for the video. Great idea! Is it possible to do a tutorial on how to set it up? Like a beginner's guide, step by step.
Sure, what do you wanna see?
@@EverythingSmartHome Thanks for reply!
Beginner's tutorial on how to setup a local smart home. Suggestions on hardware and software. How to start, simple, nothing complicated, and then maybe you can add more videos related to that subject to increase the complexity.
Any good recommendations for a local/Z Wave thermostat?
I don't use many Z-Wave devices myself but if you ask in the ESH discord there are a few people who may have some recommendations
I agree with local solution for performance, but at the same time you will want alerts about some things when away from home and you might also want to manage some devices remotely. Would be good to have a video with how to best secure your local system with this in mind. Maybe some options with the pros and cons would be useful.
Sure you definitely do, but local doesn't mean you can't have either of those things!
Thanks I'll try and get on it
Ill
it should be possible to send those alerts directly from your main computer to your phone without going through a cloud server who knows where.
@Grayson Peddie thank you. Something I'll definitely look at. I'm moving house Monday, so looking at making it a smart home 👍
So what are the disadvantages with the local system?
is there a tutorial on how to set-up your smart-home locally?
What is that home assistant logo printed PCB? I have seen that item in most of your Videos!!(just learning about home assistant )
It's called Home Assistant Yellow!
@@EverythingSmartHome is there any video describes about the item??
Been thinking about moving to local for a while now. I have a spare raspberry pi 4. I may put Home Assistant on it and check it out.
I definitely think you should...I may be biased 😅
@@EverythingSmartHome I installed it yesterday. I ordered a ZigBee dongle connect the rest of my devices. Having fun tinkering with it so far.
well, ping times in my almost fully local smarthome (with a very few exceptions such as tuya) are well above 100 ms, so i am not sure about that part
Then something is wrong with your network 😅 even on WiFi I get 20-30ms local. Wired is instant
ofc i use wifi. not much lan lamps and relays on the market and don't have the wiring prepared for them :) interesting that ping times are very different when pinging from a windows desktop or a linux VM...
My plan is as local as possible. I know that as of today 100% local is not possible but I do feel as a consumer that just because I buy and use a product does not mean I want the company that made it to know when and how often I use it.
does anyone outside of my house need to know my thermostats settings?
does anyone need to know how often I turn on my bathroom light?
I understand that the voice assistant girls need to reach out to the internet to answer some random question I ask, but she has no reason to tell anyone else I stayed up late last night.
When I started the smart home with Home assistant, I wanted to go local as much as possible. But without the cloud companies generating revenue from data there isn;t much incentive for products to be developed locally. Sure you can find tons of Zigbee/Z-vave devices but things like finding a local controller thermostat that supports humidifier is almost impossible. There is One single unit for Zigbee and one for Z-Wave. Out door local plugs ? One unit for Zigbee, that's it. WHen you come to some niche things like smoke alarm detector, none are reliable local only options. It's just not enough incentives for companies to develop the products.
Alsoa advanced features like smart voice assistant needs improving over time. Even TTS engine has not came up with solid local alternative. There is some AI detection locally with Google Corral, so at least that can now be played with.
Haven't really looked into thermostats with Humidifiers as haven't personally needed one but there is quite a few ZigBee and Z-Wave options for smoke alarms (I have some!)
Voice is the only thing device that I haven't been able to find local, although there is some promising options coming up in that area. I don't use voice personally
@@EverythingSmartHome I got Rhasspy set up with my HA and nodeRed. it took a bit of tinkering but definitely happy with the outcome
always been trying to go local. I love my ecobee thermostat so was really happy with the latest feature additions to `homekit_controller` that added all the functionality that I need completely locally
Switch to Hubitat. It is a complete local automation platform. No cloud is needed and after setting it up, just unplug it from the home network if you don't want to have Google or Alexa integration.
Well I started with cloud control. Hated it. Then went local control but the setup and maintenance was just too much. Now I just have no smart home control at all.
hey, question, are there any locally controlled smart speakers on the market??
I believe that the Sonos integration uses local push for connectivity (although obviously it will still speak to the cloud) but seems that it can be used locally
@@EverythingSmartHome thanks! love the channel by the way..
Thanks dude!
how you configure the local smart home?
Check out Home Assistant!
Is your desktop background Ash Cave in Hocking Hills, Ohio?!
I'm not sure....I just saw it and it looked sick 👀😂
What are the 5 points? (I.e. what's the abstract of the video?)
the only real smart devices we have are outlets (to control lights) and light bulbs. they are the cloud controlled kind and while I don't have too many issues with them, the few times we lose internet have made it pretty annoying in controlling those lights. I wouldn't mind switching to something local, but it seems a daunting process and the devices seem that much more expensive.
There is actually lots of good options for lights including switches and bulbs, available with WiFi, Z-Wave or ZigBee!
@@EverythingSmartHome I'll have to look around. it'd be nice to not have to rely on outside services just to control our lights
Have a look at Aqara light switches, shelly and Sonoff as some starters!
@@EverythingSmartHome I'm in an apartment, so I'm kinda iffy about replacing light switches. was looking more for smart bulbs
Local control and sometimes on top this cloud control, is my opinion the way to go.
Yep agreed, local where possible and supplement with cloud for devices that are non essential
I just replaced the first 6 Tuya modules in my down-lights with ESP32 / Tasmota. 😊 18 more to go...
For me, local control it is non-negotiable for reliability and privacy.
are you tossing the tuya modules? There is a project to try and make something similar to Tasmota for the new tuya modules
@@ingrownnipple, I assumed the Tuya modules are read/write protected. If they could be reprogammed in-situ it would save the soldering work. ESP modules are about $3 each and I have the replacement and programming process down to about 40 minutes each. Just waiting for more ESP modules to arrive.
The Tuya modules are now in a glass jar. Maybe I'll add clear epoxy and use it as a paper weight. 😄
These are the reasons that I have moved all of my devices onto homeassistant, well almost all , just my hive to move but she who must be obeyed would not be happy if I got the heating intergration wrong......but I will get there!
1. Latency
2. Privacy
3. Reliability
4. Future Proving
5. Security
I had hoped more of the localness was local. I've been giving away anything that wants a username and password instead of an IP address. I'll get there some day.
One extra reason why local is better is real-estate development. As I see it, smart homes will be popularize the moment developer can implement them for the buyers. At the moment you'll have to sell an apartment with a smartphone that has a lot of accounts pre registered on and even then only one person has a complete control over the home. Smart home should be integrated into the house, so whoever is at home is the boss.
✂️☁️ = 👍
😂🙌
The question I have is how to do TTS locally.
That's the only missing piece of the puzzle at the moment, hopefully it won't be long till we have a good option there! Voice is the only device I have that relies on the cloud, but then again I never use voice myself!
@@EverythingSmartHome I use my google/nest minis to make announcements all the time. In which to announce on depends on which room the motion sensors last detected motion. Just me and the cats so occasionally only the cats hear the announcements :-) Lots of announcements - washer is done, fridge is left open, door left open, take your meds etc etc. Would like to be able to have TTS local. I have powerful enough computers to handle it I think. For some reason Google handles things much more consistently than Alexa for my situation.
If I'm remembering correctly, the default TTS in Home Assistant saves the speech locally, in the /config/tts folder, after the first conversion. From that point on it's all local.
Where's the video showing how to get things setup locally VS. cloud?
It's completely dependent on the device you buy/choose. Did you have something specific in mind you wanted to see?
@@EverythingSmartHome I use a lot of Alexa based products and I've recently started trying Home Assistant, even followed your video to get things to work together without a subscription. But still it doesn't run seamlessly and it only recognizes media devices and not all the items I have connected through Alexa, lights, plugs, thermostat. I'm not savvy with computer coding but I can follow directions when explained well. It would nice to have some of my automations ran locally instead of through the cloud.
When your aqara smartlock doesn’t let you in with fingerprint or password, because it doesn’t have a cOnNeCtIoN 😂😂😂
Local control for as much as possible. I just don't trust companies to not sell my data or not get hacked. Like my cameras as all blocked from web and same with all my lights. I have the odd 1 still calling home but trying to block as much as I can.
Good strategy!
I have a liquid-cooled "smart" mattress which is great, but to my knowledge, the product is only available with cloud control, so if the company ceases to exist, I will be left with an $1800 USD dumb mattress.
That's a scary thought huh! 😬
Ok, but HOW??
I've been using Insteon with a Universal Devices ISY994 for over 10 years. While they have a cloud service, it only helps me link to Google Assistant and Alexa. That's totally optional. The ISY994 sits in a closet and controls lights, water sensors, motion sensors, etc. The if/the/else logic is very powerful. I sold a house full of insteon switches and removed the isy994 and all the scene logic I programmed stayed intact as it is stored in the switches themselves. I do have cloud devices as well, but they aren't critical to my smart home use or security. My security cameras store their images on my local ftp server, for instance.
Local + Home asisstant or I won't use it.
🙌
"Local Control" is a Unicorn. Things have been "Local" for 50 years.
Not sure what you mean sorry?
RUclips, STOP CENSORING ME!!! WTF IS WRONG WITH YOU??? WHY THE **** DID YOU REMOVE MY COMMENT????
