Hi! A small correction on what Nate said about the Nabateans. They weren’t necessarily just thieves, they were nomads that became small time to big time traders. Petra (which had a different name then) over time became a major trading post and the Nabateans controlled several routes in the area until the Romans came and did what they do. Hello, I’m a Kiwi and I discovered this channel a wee while ago and have been fighting the Covid blues watching your travels. This brought back wonderful memories of our trip to Petra 20 years ago. Still one of the highlights of my travelling experiences. Thanks for helping me relive it vicariously.
Petra is notorious for the ill-treatment of its horses and donkeys you can see in this video how they are forced to run on cobblestone streets, hit repeatedly and just not taken care of. Very sad and one hopes tourists would stop supporting this cruel business. There have been efforts by some organizations to deal with it I don't know how successful they are from this video it would appear not
I did the Monastery hike on a hot summer day, it was brutal and I was covered in sweat but it was so worth it. So is the second hike for the view above that they called "the best view in the world". The AC in that restaurant was a blessing.
Some of my favorite vlogs you guys have made are the ones that don’t go as planned. Travel is great and exciting but it definitely has its lows. You both do such an amazing job turning negatives into positives (but still show the negatives on camera) and that’s why I will continue to watch and love your videos!
OH. MY. GOD. This place has long been a bucket list item. I will not go there, but I absoutely LOVE the fact that you were there! You both are so awesome!
I remember seeing Petra years ago and thought to get there would be out of reach. Well...last year my husband and I visited and I realize that dreams do come true.
Hi Kara & Nate - a fab video - thank you for sharing - we visited about 15 years ago !!! Fun fact in the wall of the canyon was a gully carved in to supply water to Petra - but at some point in history the water was poisoned to force the residents to leave. Love your vlogs - keep then coming - Chris & Marianne
In 4 weeks I'll be here. Keep up the traveling, it's a beautiful world. I'm most proud of one world treasure a piece of the summit of Mt Everest, (black slate), 29029 ft above sea level. Now if I can only get a rock from the Dead Sea, 1410ft below sea level, what a contrast.
I loved this video! Like Nate, i too thought Petra was just the Treasury. So great to find out that it's so much more! Your joy at reaching the Monastery made me smile. Thanks. I really appreciate the work you put into these amazing videos!
I was privileged to visit Petra and was so pumped for your video. Then when I saw your insta and that it had been so rainy, I was worried you didn't get a full experience, but you got a FULL experience. H aha! This video was gorgeous. Loved the time-lapse sweep in front of the treasure toward the beginning.
Wow, the treasury was impressive! It felt like it was in the middle of nowhere and the canyon y’all walked through to get there was so cool! The day turned out great even with the rain. Stay you 😘
Wow; this is amazing! I've always had a recurring dream of that area where you almost got trampled by a horse,, and then finding a series of caves and temples carved into the cliff walls, and had no idea this was a real place. So weird! Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for adding to my knowledge of Petra. You showed a different side of it. Petra was a Nabaetian city until it was subdued and became a client state of Rome in the first century BC. Most of the carving dates from this period. It became an important trade hub for the Silk Road and it was Trajan who conquered the state and city in 106 AD and named it Petra. The also replaced taxation for the extortion of the Arabs and Petra prospered until sea routes replaced the land routes. After this point (the mid fifth century AD), Petra and Jordan continued to decline as the Western Roman disappeared and the western market for trade disappeared. Following the collapse of Rome, Petra was governed by the Byzantine Empire (the Eastern Roman Empire) until the incursion of the Islamic forces in the ninth century AD. It was absorbed into the Ottoman Empire 4 to 5 centuries later. It became famous again in the First World when Lawrence of Arabia used it as a staging site for his liberation of Trans Jordan, which culminated in the conquest of Aqaba from the desert side. Lawrence was also responsible for assisting in the installation of the dynasty that has ruled Jordan from the end of the First World War until the present. Jordan is on of the most peaceful parts of the Middle East and has economically suffered drastically for its hospitality to the refugees from the Syrian civil war. Thanks again for an exceptionally illuminating episode of your peregrinations.
