The Jordanian tourism board owes you both. Your blogs from Jordan have so many of us looking at airfares and dreaming of walking in your footsteps and eating the same meals.... except the sheep head. It looks like an amazing place and not too over run by tourists. Thanks for climbing the 850 steps for us!!

@@Ididntwantayoutubehandl hhhh the sheep head is too much even for some Arabs like myself. Actually, sheep head is enjoyed by the many Arabs. But even some Arabs like myself cannot bear it..its definitely too HEAVY a meal! I cant blame a foreigner tbh lol

Glynis Rogers well, I thought sheep head was awful as a meal ,, until I landed in Scotland, and been introduced to the black pudding ( pigs blood) for breakfast,, I vomited all my organs out on that day🤮🤮🤮.... god, sheep head feels like strawberries now....

I had the most amazing experience in Petra . I am 33 and always been overweight . I have lost about 20 kilos in the last 3 years. I did this walk and the hike in October and felt as if I have conquered the world . Never I would have imagined to do anything physically taxing . Also it was just mind blowing .

❤️I was just there in Petra in January! 🇯🇴
PETRA TRAVEL TIPs: instead of buying the expensive Bedouin Coat, we bargained with the shop owner and he let me RENT IT for the day for $35! I came unprepared for the cold so it was a life saver. ALSO - the shops get progressively less expensive the further you walk. Don’t buy from the first shop... keep walking!

Hi! A small correction on what Nate said about the Nabateans. They weren’t necessarily just thieves, they were nomads that became small time to big time traders. Petra (which had a different name then) over time became a major trading post and the Nabateans controlled several routes in the area until the Romans came and did what they do. It’s believed that Petra once was a very large glowing city with several oases and man-made water routes too. As usual I love the video though and can’t wait for the next one!

I do not believe any longer nomads becoming traders did this, with exactly what tools. I am an engineer and I have no clue how this was done and by who.

Petra is notorious for the ill-treatment of its horses and donkeys you can see in this video how they are forced to run on cobblestone streets, hit repeatedly and just not taken care of. Very sad and one hopes tourists would stop supporting this cruel business. There have been efforts by some organizations to deal with it I don't know how successful they are from this video it would appear not

So glad your day worked out well! Looks like this is a great time of the year to visit Petra. I would much rather hike in cool, rainy weather than in 104 degrees Fahrenheit weather! Nate, as usual a little setback(rainy weather) turned into a perfect day to hike comfortably with very few tourists! Thanks y'all for taking us along! Warm hugs from Virginia!

Thanks for adding to my knowledge of Petra. You showed a different side of it. Petra was a Nabaetian city until it was subdued and became a client state of Rome in the first century BC. Most of the carving dates from this period. It became an important trade hub for the Silk Road and it was Trajan who conquered the state and city in 106 AD and named it Petra. The also replaced taxation for the extortion of the Arabs and Petra prospered until sea routes replaced the land routes. After this point (the mid fifth century AD), Petra and Jordan continued to decline as the Western Roman disappeared and the western market for trade disappeared. Following the collapse of Rome, Petra was governed by the Byzantine Empire (the Eastern Roman Empire) until the incursion of the Islamic forces in the ninth century AD. It was absorbed into the Ottoman Empire 4 to 5 centuries later. It became famous again in the First World when Lawrence of Arabia used it as a staging site for his liberation of Trans Jordan, which culminated in the conquest of Aqaba from the desert side. Lawrence was also responsible for assisting in the installation of the dynasty that has ruled Jordan from the end of the First World War until the present. Jordan is on of the most peaceful parts of the Middle East and has economically suffered drastically for its hospitality to the refugees from the Syrian civil war. Thanks again for an exceptionally illuminating episode of your peregrinations.
