- A new artist re-color video, this time using the original artwork of my new friend Artemis. His original Witch's Hut illustration had so many fun elements. In this video I rethink the color and light and show an alternate way to imagine this scene. Enjoy!

Jeremy, this is absolutely fantastic! Watching you paint this was so interesting, I loved listening to your thought process here. I can't say how much I appreciate seeing your process, because I very much am still learning, and when I painted this piece, I had only been painting for a few months (I used to only do line drawings).
I learned a lot watching your work on this, and I absolutely love the mood, and the depth of color. Thank you for taking your time on this, and for your kind words. ♡
So glad to work together with you on this one! Keep creating Artemis!!
Where’s the long version, king 😤
I really like both. Artemis you are awesome!
And Jeremy, your workflow/process is so interesting. I love your videos, learning about light has been the best thing for me, i finally improved. Like i can actually make 3d object now that aren't as flat as before. I can actually say now that i like drawing/panting. Before my it was quite dull, i was getting bored after 1h or less, but learning form you made me like the process even if i focus to much on the end result. Now i can paint for 3 hours and it feel good.
Thank you for the class. Have a nice day :)
It was cool seeing you use RGB curves like that! That’s something I’ve messed with and can appreciate the validation of the technique! Something I’ve messed with was making an action to have the individual RGB curve at a constant value of 128, so I can adjust each channel with a horizontal graph on overlay mode, soft light etc… as 128 is 50% gray
And I can “add a light” by compressing the highlight slider!
I don’t know if you remember, but I commented on your first video a year ago - and it’s so cool seeing your channel’s grow! And thanks for the video on painting outdoors! (What I commented about)
Hi Daniel! What a cool technique you're describing there. I might have to give that a try. Thanks for being one of my first viewers. Yes, it's blowing my mind how quickly this channel grew. I didn't really expect much from this and thought just a few friends and family might watch it. So glad it's helping people
This is wild! I'm not an artist but I've always been interested in learning (more as a fantasy desire than actually learning). But I don't think I ever would have fathomed the idea of composition through the lens of strictly light, rather I would have been much more focused on color, precise drawing for realism, and trying to capture tone or feel. By using light as foundation it seems like all those other aspects are automatically implemented. Very enlightening (wink, wink), thanks so much!
Also, you're composition has one part that isn't believable, that cat would be curled in the sunlight, hahaha
Thank you! Yes, light itself is a powerful tool indeed and if done properly can totally change a composition. I come from a background where shots are given to me to light and I don't have the ability to move geometry around. I can only add and remove light, so I've had to adapt this skill to my illustrations, which makes a repaint like this really fun. And you're absolutely right that the cat would be sleeping in the sunbeam to make this more authentic. Hehe
I'm exited when you post new videos.Hopefully we will see more of that recolor series.
Great video, your the modern 2023 Rembrandt, like the way you work with light. Very inspiring! Looking out for the next video...
man you're the best, thank you for these helpful vids
it looks like absolute magic. thank you so much for the walk-through!
i've been thinking about this a lot last year, how if you put the right values in the right places the painting can look almost photorealistic even if the proportions are exaggerated. and it seems like light is the biggest contributor, the way it bounces off objects, as you say
I like both versions. If the original had the light from the window on the floor it would’ve tied it all together but each version definitely has its own strengths and both are beautiful
Woah, really loved the lighting you painted here!
It clicked 🤯🤩 thank you this was invaluable 🙏
Another great video
what a great channel. I look forward to your videos. thankyou for sharing your talent.
Thnaks!
Cat is not on the sun spot - 0/10 realism /s
Love the video, it's so interesting to me, coming from graphic design background, to learn how masterful artists use and think of colors.
Ah much better I love studies like these. Haven't gotten the time but will follow along later, I find these types of studies fun. Plus it's a great way to practice perspective.
Please make more videos!❤🔥
always a joy to watch!
A new Light Ponderings video?! My day has been made! Fantastic work sir :)
Awwww.... thanks!!
You have so much skill for pushing and pulling desaturated colors. I would love to know how to do this with traditional paints.
From my experience lots of 3D artist struggle with colour. It would be great if you can work over some rendered scenes as well.
New vidd lesgoo
I am amazed how quickly the scene came together. “The last 10% is 90% of the work”! 😮
I really want to know more about the color of the bounce light on the floor. It is so beautifully saturated and warm. Did you use the color of the floor to determine the hue? How do you know determine the saturation level? Everything came to life when it appeared!!
thank you Jeremy!
Thank you Paula! Yes, capturing bounced light is a really big component to making it feel believable. Often artists forget that first bounce of light and that it is such a powerful tool for shaping objects in the scene. Bounced light has a soft quality, but still has directionality that tells our eyes details about the shape of objects. Because of the theory of color temperature often bounced light often exaggerates the saturation of the objects that the light is bouncing off of, and so I often choose deeply saturated tones to add in.
Painting loose to discover opportunities with your light and color. Loved seeing the process!
I just watched some of a James Baxter animation demo, and he said something similar with looking for opportunities in movement and poses.
Work loose, discover, then refine.
It all reminds me of uncovering dinosaur bones at museums, for some reason...
... Have any plans to do pieces with mirrors?
Yes! Absolutely! Starting loose allows for so much exploration and ideation. I'm glad to hear animation can do the same.
What do you mean by "do pieces with mirrors?"??
@@LightingMentorWoops, reflections is what I meant. I typed mirrors since that came to mind first.
Have any plans to do artwork with reflections?
I have a question for anybody in the comments or Jeremy himself, i recently found this channel and followed a long with the egg color study it was a blast! since then ive done a couple more and they went pretty good but it seems everytime i focus more on what im doing and getting the right colors i get worse and worse? its just so hard to find some colors and i go on and on looking for a technique that can give me a consistent lead but havent found one, i guess my question is any tips on finding any color from a picture or painting?
Hi Ethan! Yup, learning color can be daunting, but there are ways to make it easier. Here’s something to try… when you start, make a copy of the reference layer and blur it. Then do the lighting study on the blurred version. It will simplify the colors a bit and give you time to practice. Also try making a color guess, and then use the color picker to see how close you got. Do this on some of your next studies and see if that helps. I also will soon have a new site online where I’ll be doing classes with curriculum and guidance to help if you might be interested too at www.lightingmentor.com
@@LightingMentor AH thank you so much for the tips i will definitely try them out! I've also been using your Pinterest board for the studies a lot of beautiful stuff in there, and yes i would love to check the site out and get involved! have a good rest of your night/day, thanks again.
What brushes do you recommend for blending colors?
Great question! I made a video about all of my Photoshop settings and the Mixer brush that I use for blending that you can find here... ruclips.net/video/SQ6SIEn9eF4/видео.html
Wow. Just fantastic.
I learn lots of thing from you.
I have a one request for you.
For this video Please release the Normal speed video.
Please....
Thank you.
A long version would be 4.5 hours long and come with no commentary as I was listening to music as I painted it. But I shall consider it for my next ones :)
@@LightingMentor sure.
Any update on course ?
Oh my courses are so very close to releasing! That's why I've not been making as many videos here. I'm hoping for the launch to be June 1st or before
First
Thanks for all the awesome content Jeremy (and Artemis for the original image!)! Videos like these are such a blessing.
I have also learned a lot from following your color studies and even got inspired to upload my own content.
Warm greetings from Germany 🤗
Edit after watching: I am SOOO looking forward to the video about static and dynamic lighting. I cannot wait!!
I've just recently discovered your channel and it's given me a starting point on how to improve! I can draw, but painting can be so overwhelming to learn all at once, and I feel like I'm bad at every aspect of it. So thank you so much for breaking down light and colour into manageable little chunks :) It's given me the motivation to actually do studies! Your videos are also a calming thing to wind down to 😅
Yay! I'm so glad you're seeing how painting can be manageable. I think it's just often not taught well and can seem unachievable. Keep creating my new friend!
I LOVE these videos they are so spectacular to watch and really shows us how to get better
Is the process of recoloring a picture something that can be replicated in color grading for a film/work?
Great question! Color grading often is more of a global effect to the whole images, but at times some "relighting" effects can be achieved in the grade. The most common trick is day for night, where a shot is photographed during the day but then graded to look like a night shot. The process of relighting in an illustration can vary as I started from scratch rather than just trying to adjust values on top of the original piece. I hope this makes sense
I just discovered your channel and amazing quality content, I love your passion about light and colour. The way you explain concepts and insights inspires me to do the same for my students. Thank you so much!
Update okay I followed along making my own witch hut ( which was fun lol) I'd love to know more about what you're thinking when lighting a room. This is something I still struggle with.
I am not sure why I'm so bothered by the cat not sleeping in the sunlight, or the workbench facing away from the sources of light.
amazing.... thank you
This is soo good.
Dudes too goood
❤
I have a technical question because I'm still fairly new to digital art: what is add mode/ what does it do exactly? How, in a technical sense, do you add color after adding light?
Hi Autumn! So in pretty much every painting program in the layers there are a set of options that are usually called layer modes. You’ll see multiple, screen, add, difference… and a ton of other options. If you put that layer in either add or screen anything you paint will only lighten the layers below it. Anything dark won’t appear to do anything. I like to put a layer in add mode, then get a very soft airbrush and gently paint on a bloom effect. If you use a multiply layer mode it will only darken and lighter colors will have no effect, which can be useful for painting shadows. I hope this helps!
Are still working with the studios???
I am currently shifting from being employed full time by studios, to just being an occasional consultant to studios. I am soon launching my own business of mentoring people who want to dive deeper into learning lighting
awesome job, perfectly explained, thank you
Incredible video, i've learned a lot thank to you !
Jeremy : the essence, information and learning skills you are sharing w/ the world here are phenomenal! Thank you so much for taking the time to give back as you are a very good teacher! I love how you simply explain and show us your theories come to life! 🙏🙏🙏
Thank you Jeremy😊👍🏻
we've missed you!! so excited to see another video! thanks! ❤🎉
Awww thanks Holly-Leanne!
