My 605 is a great gun. I paid $249 for it brand new. I carry it with .38 special+P. When I'm in the sticks I chamber .357 Mag. Both rounds shoot very well.
My EDC is the 605 with .38 +P as well. Very shootable handgun. I use an outside the waistband holder - - I'm old and horizontally challenged at the waistline.
I have a 605. When I went to load it if fell apart. The yoke screw was loose from the factory and it fell apart. Taurus has sense made a polymer yoke screw that should not fall out BUT they make you pay for it. After getting it back together I had my gun smith check it out and I shot it. I liked shooting the 357 more than the 38s. Other than the yoke screw issue it is great but if it falls out in a fire fight you will likely be killed. So if you get one immediately order the polymer yoke screw or use loctite to keep it in place. When firing the metel yoke screw will loosen after about 50 rounds and yes I checked it. Not every 605 has that issue but I have spoken to Taurus about it.
I like my 605 in matte Stainless. But it's NOT my EDC. I use remington green and white box .357 sjhp as my carry ammo when carrying it as my primary, along with 2 speedloaders as reloads. G&w box is a warm round, just a little hotter than .38 +p, and in mine it hits to point of aim. The 85 and 605 poly are generally carried as backups to another pistol, another revolver I carry is an naa mini, normally for cyote or other wild animal defense. Strangely, i am split dominant but favor my left side and that is the hand I shoot semi autos with better, while I shoot revolvers more naturally with my right hand. Long guns are all shot left handed. I enjoy my taurus revolvers, fortunately here in texas we are given lot of choice what we carry. If I want to carry all 4 revolvers for a double ny reload, it is legal. A more normal carry is one semi and one revolver.
@@DCHamer-tp8ut the 605 poly only gets .38 +p even though it is rated for .357. As such it shoots about as well as my 85, the big downside is the lack of holsters. Me too, I ordered the Toro ( Taurus optic ready optic) variant which is just a small difference on the top between the sights for a red dot mounting option. I did opt for the stainless, 3" barrel 605 after studying the velocity chart results comparing barrel lengths to velocity + ft lb muzzle energy balance. 4" sometimes has slightly more but generally 3" is within the difference from it as to the variation between one round to the next, so basically 3" offeres the beat of everything imo. GOD bless, happy carrying.

WoW! Looked thru the comments and nobody, NOBODY?! I must be special?! Just bought my first revolver few months ago, and it was the Taurus 608. Could not be happier! 4inch barrel, and enough holes in my Cylinder to make the most die-hard S&W Afficianado nod in agreement. Flawless, first owner, and since I purchased, the price of the 608 has gone up!! I can not buy another 608 brand new for same price I bought my first for.
I really like the look of those wood stocks. Another guy on RUclips used a Dremmel with a felt polishing wheel on his 605 and it actually looked real nice, kind of like your Rossi there.
I have the Same Gun. I did have an issue with it Shaving .357 Rounds and getting some sort of Shrapnel blow back. I did send it in and Taurus adjusted the forcing cone and sort of fixed it. LOL I also put in the Galloway spring kit in it. Its a good carry gun.
I owned one of these. I found reloading tedious, even with speedloaders. I sold it back to my gunshop, and bought a GX4. Best decision I mase in my opinion.
good review. i carry one appendix in a bulldog holster, also, and forget it's there. the cheap nylon holster does get wet from sweat in the summer and causes the stainless steel to rust a little. i carry .357, though, as i carry 38+p in my 85. the 357 is manageable and i shoot the 605 better than my sp101 and it has a shorter barrel which is more comfortable to carry. taurus and rossi were two totally different companies until taurus bought the rights to produce the rossi revolvers. the rossi has the firing pin on the hammer as opposed to the transfer bar system deployed by taurus. the same company owned both taurus and smith & wesson at one time a few years back and they supposedly shared ideas. anyway, good review of a good gun.
I agree! Taurus gets high ratings from the experts that I follow. I know the gun you’re talking about too- the Taurus 92. It even has a similar name lol have you shot one before?
Ive got the Taurus 605 defender with a Hogue grip. Ive got large hands and the Hogue grips feel good. The Trigger pull is just over 11 lbs on double action and right at 6 lbs on single. I ordered Galloway reduced trigger spring kit which should cut it down to half that which I'm looking forward to. Great gun.
I like my 605. I mainly shoot 38spc. out of it when practicing but when I carry it I load it with 38spc. plus P. I do keep some 357 for it but don't shoot that cartridge very often.
I have a 605 as well and consider it a .38S + P chambered in .357mag, because if you look at the forcing cone, it is a bit on the thin side, and cannot handle a consistent diet of .357mag, however, if you get their Raging Hunter chambered in .357mag, you can shoot nothing but magnum cartridges in it all day as it has a beefy forcing cone and cylinder. Almost as if it was meant for experimental loads. The only thing I dislike about any Taurus is that you need to completely depress the trigger to engage, unlike every other makes.
Does that make it a heavier trigger pull than other revolvers? I don’t know revolvers enough to compare what you’re talking about completely depressing the trigger.
@@DCHamer-tp8ut Not a heavier trigger, however, if you had larger hands, it basically forces you to implode your hand and screws up your break. You might break left or right opposite direction of your dominant hand. It will also pinch your skin. My solution is putting larger wood grips to full up the real estate of your palm to help mitigate the Taurus revolver trigger distance.
Straight facts 💯 . I just bought the gun, in a 3 inch barrel Toro Optic. I didnt know the Optic sight cost so damn much❗If you looking to get 1. It's cheaper to buy from a gun dealer store 💯. Now I had .357 Magnum's in the past. Up to date I clearly, forgot how mean this calibur is❗I put 200 rounds thru mine 💯. The recoil is manageable. But I forgot it kicks ass, when that bullet flies out of the barrel❗Man, I love this gun❗I don't want to feel the hit 🎯 from it❗❗I didn't like 12 pound double action trigger pull❗Wolff, hammer springs changed all that 💯. One hundred 25 grain hollow points is a precise stick recoil feel 💯. One hundred 58 grain is a stiff recoil feel 💯. Still manageable to shoot 💯. Shooting tray 8's from buffalo 🦬 bore hard cast lead rounds. Gives a bang punch 👊 as well 💯. I knew, when I bought this gun. All it was going to do was curb my appetite, to buy another 1❗You guess it, a 6 inch barrel .357 Magnum is on order❗
Will do, buddy..I first fell in love with the Taurus revolvers when I purchased a model 66 with a 6 inch barrel, and I still love it to this day after almost 8 years just needed something more practical for EDC when I found this model 605 for around 250 I couldn't pass it up
i have 1, & got it as a replacement 4 the 856 i had an unfortunate incident with. same or newer grips, & zero problems using .357 ammo. * USE MOTHERS MAG POLISH ON THE STAINLESS STEEL
I understand why some people want to shoot 38's in their 357. I have a 11.7 oz S&W 360 PD in 357, so yeah. In this case however, I would think if someone liked/wanted a Taurus snubbie and knew they were going to carry 38 specials, you might as well get the Taurus 856. One extra round in a snubbie-size package is a 20% increase in capacity.
No 605 for me, but I do have a model 627 4" .357 Tracker; my primary range gun... It's got about 300 rounds through it so far, and it's trigger has lightened up nicely. No issues. I also have a snub nose .44 Magnum from Taurus, which I'm still practicing with - with .44 Special (125 rounds through it so far). Great revolvers for the money, imo.
@@DCHamer-tp8ut The kick is quite substantial with full Magnum loads - as it's unported and only weighs about 30 ounces... The shock to one's hands is significant, so I wear leather shooting gloves. I've fired five 305 grain bear loads out of it too (just to test them), and the muzzle rise is a good 6-7 inches! With .44 Special it's manageable; perhaps just a slightly stronger recoil than shooting .357 Magnum.
Just wanted to share, I couldn't be more pleased with the 605. What a fine revolver at a great price point. It handles so well with 38 specials and actually very wellbwith the magnum ammo. I saw the wood handgrip, that is actually inspiring me to do the same, added pinky grip will assist in managing the .357 mags. Great video!
my dad has a 605 that went thru the taurus custom shop they smoothed the action and ported it I don't like to carrie 38+p in my S&W 642 but I don't mind .357 in the 605 I also have a m327 in .327 fed mag it is unported and a hand full with 100 gr .327s I carrie .32 h&r mags in it
its my first ever revolver, was going to get an 856 but this was right next to it for $10 more.. sacrifice an extra round for .357, but can also run .38sp and +p. best decision ever! it kicks nice with .357 but IMO the double action trigger is insanely heavy. call me a hoe but after 100 rounds my finger is like no more please haha.
I have owned a 605 for over a decade. Shortly after the purchase I found that it would only fire in the single action mode, not double action. The spring bar which controls the force of the hammer was not exerting enough pressure to bust the cap while in double action mode. A simple fix involving a bolt and a nut took care of the problem. It quickly became my daily carry gun. The weight, size and balance are perfect for me. I carry 357's in it with 2 five round speed loaders in my pocket.
@@DCHamer-tp8ut I have a omni that I wear in the waistband. It’s a universal that has a nice grippy inside to keep the everything from sliding around but perfect for when I need to draw
I do own a 605 and 856 and s/w 642 Taurus is a good revolver I rank it rt up there with s/w Smith is a little bit smoother but that's it. I carry 38 +p most of the time. Mags are a bit angry lol anyway thanks great review 😄
Recently bought a poly-protector 605. Took many rds to figure out how to hold it to hit a target. It's a freaking handful with the magnums. Only real problem is the cylinder latch is terrible. Very hard to open. Nothing like the smith's I've seen. Price is nice though.
I have one, but haven't fired any .357 ammo, just .38. It has an added feature---anytime you run out of ammo it is still a deadly weapon, just use that heavy butt as a club.
Just put $ down on one yesterday. Can't wait to go to the range this weekend. My Great grandfather had a Taurus. 357. I can't remember the model it had a ported barrel. They have been around for a while and have come a long way. Their semi automatics are getting more popular every year.
Love my 605. Swapped in a set of Wolff Springs and it's trigger is better than my 586 or my King Cobra (both stock, a set of springs would put them back in front of the 605). Close your cylinder with your thumb on the crane, not the cylinder itself, and you can pretty much slam it.
I mean if I was to just use 38 special for self-defense I would just get a six-shot Taurus 856 instead if I carry 357 Magnum for self-defense I know that it can over-penetrate but I carry it because it it packs a punch and can stop an attacker with almost one round every time and I found with a Taurus 605 with the rubber grips I can control it really good at least at the range I understand what you're saying about high-stress situations do but like I said if I'm carrying the 605 for self-defense I'm carrying 357 Magnum rounds in it I'll shoot 38 special for practice
Another reviewer on RUclips had timing issue with the cylinder on the Taurus 605. He sent the gun back to Taurus a couple times only to have it returned not fixed. I may still get one though only because it’s inexpensive and the next closes thing to a Smith Wesson. You were asking how come Smith costs so much more. Well, a Taurus revolver may look like a Smith but it ain’t a Smith. Smiths are US made while Tauruses are made in Brazil. Quality control and workmanship cost money.
I just picked one of these Taurus 605 up to carry in the woods. Reading the enclosed pamphlet, I read that they discouraged using +P rounds in this firearm. I would definitely prefer +P when carrying in the woods while hunting. I called the Taurus rep on the enclosed pamphlet. The rep explained that shooting a lot of +P ammo in 38 or 357 ammo could actually damage this firearm. I bought this with the intent of using 38 +P and I am a little concerned. Have you shot a lot of +P at the range, and have there been any problems. Disappointed in what I read in the pamphlet and heard from the rep.
That’s nice. Great video. I carry the Taurus 856 ultra light with six rounds of .38 Special +P and my Taurus 856 Defender (3 inch barrel) with six rounds of .38 Special +P. I alternate between the two and sometimes both or one on my person and the other readily available.
I wouldn't trust my life to any Taurus handgun. My first Taurus was their 1911 .45 After a dozen shots the safety lever would fall off. I returned the gun and after 60 days, they replaced the complete gun. My second was a 856. It repeatedly had light hits. My local gun shop does not stock Taurus products because of the high return rate.
My boyfriend just bought me the Taurus 605 as my first self defense gun a couple weeks ago and we just took it to the range to shoot the 357 & 38 special on 4th of July for familiarization. Definitely agree the 38 special is the lighter of the two. But just as I finished cleaning it, and pulled the trigger a couple times, the yoke screw popped right off! Does anyone know why this would be?! This is concerning as a first time gun owner.
The academy sporting goods chain even during covid has had them under $350. During black friday sales they can be $300 if that is a featured gun that year. My 605 poly was about $250 on black friday a few years ago.
The 605 loaded with .357 is my trail gun but .38 would be just a little light for trail defense here in MT...though .38 is great for drills down at the gravel pit...nice review!

I'd like to take it out, hiking with me and throw it in my backpack but I'm afraid of it going off. Anybody got any other solutions for that?

Heck yeah same with this one, I’ve watched the price consistently rise. Now it’s about 50-75$ more than when I got it😱
I really like the look of those wood stocks.
LOL
I also put in the Galloway spring kit in it. Its a good carry gun.
Yes it kicks ass
Yes it does
FYI. Never slam shut your cylinder. It could damage your gun and put it out of timing.
That’s news to me but I guarantee you I’ll never do it again now. Thank you!
@@DCHamer-tp8ut yeah you'll screw up the crane
I had not heard that either, though I suppose that makes sense. Is there a way to ensure that doesn’t happen? Just shut it softer?
@@matthewallen1715 Yes
I just purchased the 605 Sunday.
I have the 605 love it change the grip and 357 are no problem also have the 856 they are nice to me!
The 856 is next on my list. I love these Taurus revolvers.
Yes sir!!! I replaced my Taurus grips with a Hogue grips & i can actually shoot.357 magnum rounds now with less recoil hurt!!! Great upgrade
Just purchased the Taurus 605 357, great gun I like the versatility of various rounds. I prefer the 38+P. Great CCW
I owned one of these. I found reloading tedious, even with speedloaders. I sold it back to my gunshop, and bought a GX4. Best decision I mase in my opinion.
Have you owned a revolver before? What made you go from 357 to 9mm?
good review. i carry one appendix in a bulldog holster, also, and forget it's there. the cheap nylon holster does get wet from sweat in the summer and causes the stainless steel to rust a little. i carry .357, though, as i carry 38+p in my 85. the 357 is manageable and i shoot the 605 better than my sp101 and it has a shorter barrel which is more comfortable to carry. taurus and rossi were two totally different companies until taurus bought the rights to produce the rossi revolvers. the rossi has the firing pin on the hammer as opposed to the transfer bar system deployed by taurus. the same company owned both taurus and smith & wesson at one time a few years back and they supposedly shared ideas. anyway, good review of a good gun.
Taurus makes a decent Beretta 92 clone.
And the rest of the gun line is getting better.
Same here! It’s one of my favorite guns ever.
Have one......... love it, bobbed hammer !
Going this weekend to get one but I'll opt for the blued version...😁👍💪🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
I have put a down payment at my local gun shop, really looking forward to getting my 605
It’s definitely one of the greatest guns I’ve ever owned. I hope you like it, let me know you get it! 👍🏽
Will do, buddy..I first fell in love with the Taurus revolvers when I purchased a model 66 with a 6 inch barrel, and I still love it to this day after almost 8 years just needed something more practical for EDC when I found this model 605 for around 250 I couldn't pass it up
@@daytondreadfulwater8946 the G3C is worth looking at too
@@brandontyree3250 I've owned two of them and ran into issues with both just from personal experience I prefer their revolvers over Auto loaders
@@daytondreadfulwater8946 what were the issues might I ask ?
I bought a hogue grip and over molded is the way to go. All 3 fingers and a comfy grip.
Thanks
My everyday carry. 👍🏽😎
Same
Kimber makes a nice .357 mag revolver too.
I’ve seen them but have no experience with their revolvers. I like Kimber tho, do you have one?
Ive got that one.l also have the 605 defender.very happy with both.
i have 1, & got it as a replacement 4 the 856 i had an unfortunate incident with.
same or newer grips, & zero problems using .357 ammo.
* USE MOTHERS MAG POLISH ON THE STAINLESS STEEL
Got it 👊🏽👊🏽💯
Does it really work well? Take long??
How’s the kick on the 44 snub? I haven’t shot one yet so I’m always curious about those.
Dang I can only imagine those bear loads😂🤘🏽💯it hurts my hand just thinking about it
I had the 2022 model squib loads damage it I'm waiting for my new one with cerakote finish Altamont wood grips. Sweet 👍🏿😊👍🏿
Heck yeah these grips make it 100x better
love the wood grip
They’re the best. They help for a good grip.
Love my 605
Just wanted to share, I couldn't be more pleased with the 605. What a fine revolver at a great price point. It handles so well with 38 specials and actually very wellbwith the magnum ammo. I saw the wood handgrip, that is actually inspiring me to do the same, added pinky grip will assist in managing the .357 mags. Great video!
The wooden grips make a difference, especially on the draw. 357 has been more fun to shoot since I got them.
Isle of Man 84in in a snub-nosed I love all three
my dad has a 605 that went thru the taurus custom shop
they smoothed the action and ported it
I don't like to carrie 38+p in my S&W 642 but I don't mind .357 in the 605
I also have a m327 in .327 fed mag it is unported and a hand full with 100 gr .327s
I carrie .32 h&r mags in it
its my first ever revolver, was going to get an 856 but this was right next to it for $10 more.. sacrifice an extra round for .357, but can also run .38sp and +p. best decision ever! it kicks nice with .357 but IMO the double action trigger is insanely heavy. call me a hoe but after 100 rounds my finger is like no more please haha.
Yup
Spring bar? Bolt and nut? OMG are you my friend's grandfather?
I have same model. But without the safety feature. Where did you get it from?
I Have A Ruger LCR In .38 & It's A Great Shooter, I Installed CT Laser Grips & It Puts The Rounds Dead Center Out To 15 Feet...
Yeah I need to look into those because I hear a lot of good things
Just bought mine last week as a new ccw and I’m loving it
It’s the perfect gun for cc. What kind of holster do you use?
Got the 3 inch defender...loving it!👍🤙✌️
Heck yeah I wanna try that one too
@@DCHamer-tp8ut ameriglo night sights too....great video sir
@@DCHamer-tp8ut I have a omni that I wear in the waistband. It’s a universal that has a nice grippy inside to keep the everything from sliding around but perfect for when I need to draw
I have owned one over 20 years! Nice gun for the money. Not as nice as my S&W or Colt but it didn’t cost near as much either.
Heck yeah! Budget AND shooter friendly.
I do own a 605 and 856 and s/w 642 Taurus is a good revolver I rank it rt up there with s/w Smith is a little bit smoother but that's it. I carry 38 +p most of the time. Mags are a bit angry lol anyway thanks great review 😄
Plus if you have to use it you don't have an expensive Smith, Ruger or Colt sitting in an evidence locker getting all screwed up.
@@la_old_salt2241 exactly right!
Lovely video.
Thanks
Recently bought a poly-protector 605. Took many rds to figure out how to hold it to hit a target. It's a freaking handful with the magnums. Only real problem is the cylinder latch is terrible. Very hard to open. Nothing like the smith's I've seen. Price is nice though.
I’ve not heard that about the cylinder latch yet but that’s good to know👍🏽👍🏽
Very snappy with .357 loads. Not enjoyable to shoot, but works well.
Do it to it 👊🏽👊🏽
I have one, but haven't fired any .357 ammo, just .38. It has an added feature---anytime you run out of ammo it is still a deadly weapon, just use that heavy butt as a club.
I have the poly 605 and after 3 years and hundreds of rounds of ever kind? It performs like a machine!!👍👍
Just put $ down on one yesterday. Can't wait to go to the range this weekend. My Great grandfather had a Taurus. 357. I can't remember the model it had a ported barrel. They have been around for a while and have come a long way. Their semi automatics are getting more popular every year.
Yes and yes! Let me know how it goes!
I like my 605 but carry my SP101 way more. Cool video. The lock is dumb. What grip is that?
Taurus website. Altamont Walnut Checkered Grip Logo SM Frame Revolvers. I gotta check out that 101, I heard they’re smooth.
The original grip has a rounded half-pinkie extension.
the Rossi is a copy of an S&W J Frame, the Taurus 605 is a copy of a S&W K Frame.
Oh ok got it now thanks!!
Not correct. If it was K size it would hold 6 rounds. It is a J size, I believe.
Where can I get those wood grips
Love my 605. Swapped in a set of Wolff Springs and it's trigger is better than my 586 or my King Cobra (both stock, a set of springs would put them back in front of the 605).
Close your cylinder with your thumb on the crane, not the cylinder itself, and you can pretty much slam it.
That’s good to know, thank you. I’m gonna have to look into those springs👍🏽🔫
I also went that route, makes a difference
Just bought one two days ago for $349. Waiting for the proceed (10 day waiting period). I can’t wait.
Can you use 357, bullet's in a .38 special?
Just got my 605 and it was out of stock in every store close but where I got mine at.
Well spoken!!
Nice. Get it💥🔫💯
I just picked one of these Taurus 605 up to carry in the woods.
The 856 is my next purchase. Most likely the 3”
I have a tracker. Not shiny enough is actually my only complaint with it 😅
I wouldn't trust my life to any Taurus handgun. My first Taurus was their 1911 .45
After a dozen shots the safety lever would fall off. I returned the gun and after
60 days, they replaced the complete gun. My second was a 856. It repeatedly
had light hits. My local gun shop does not stock Taurus products because of
the high return rate.
Want one but made up my mind I’d only buy if 357 and stainless.
At a good price. And that is why I don’t have one yet lol. How much was she
About 450 with the grips and all
The academy sporting goods chain even during covid has had them under $350. During black friday sales they can be $300 if that is a featured gun that year. My 605 poly was about $250 on black friday a few years ago.
It's ok, I own one. A fair value for the money.
The 605 loaded with .357 is my trail gun but .38 would be just a little light for trail defense here in MT...though .38 is great for drills down at the gravel pit...nice review!
Thanks! It’s one of my favorite guns.
Those grips are amazing. I went to the Taurus website and didn’t see those offered. Did you contact them and request them?
shoptaurus.com/products/altamont-smooth-wood-small-frame-revolvers.html these are close. The ones I have might not be on there anymore, but I didn’t church too thoroughly tbh.
Mine is a 2022 model 357/38. 3 inch barrel
I like those
Can you use speed loaders with these grips?
The 605 is a pussy cat with any +P .38 but .357 is an adventure you will not want to repeat.
HA! I’m adventurous!! Nah I only shoot 1 or 2 cylinders of magnum when I go. I LOVE 38 tho and it’s so smooth in the 605
Nice gun but it's not shiny enough.
They shine up great if you put the time in. I polished mine with scotch pads, mother’s mag polish, and a dremel tool. I hated the dull matt finish.
How long did it take to do the whole gun?
@@DCHamer-tp8ut
Probably around 6-7 hours. I only worked on it like and hour at a time, while I watched TV. Took my time. There’s a video on RUclips of a guy that picked up one polished, if you wondering what it would look like.
I have this gun however it's all black. I've shot both 38&357 out of it. Love this gun. However, I do not like the safety feature. I'm guessing with a holster I wouldn't have to lock it. I'd like to take it out, hiking with me and throw it in my backpack but I'm afraid of it going off. Anybody got any other solutions for that?
With adrenaline recoil wouldnt be the problem...its the follow up shots... but hey you only got 5 so i personally wouldnt dump all my rounds super fast anyways...nothing wrong with 38 + p tho
I really feel bad for the guy that gets a 357 pulled on him. I don't actually feel bad.
That would wreck my hand, with those wood grips,
Yup!
I have the new 605 Defender this year model 2022 357mag/38 three inch barrel I donot like the Houge grips that comes with it not good in my hand to small. The grips you put on your 605 will they fit my 2022 MODEL. IT BOLTS FROM THE BOTTOM THERES A HINGE CLIP INSIDE?
I wouldn’t know if they fit or not tbh. I would check their website to make sure. Both my grips screw in to the side.
Hamer trust me brother I called Houge Taurus packmyar brownell. The one I ordered from packmyar called blue diamond beautiful fit in my hand BUT would not fit on the handle. THIS IS THEIR BRAND NEW MODEL FOR 2022 JUST CAME OUT!! THANKS BROTHER.
The only advantage I see for .357 Mag over .38 Special is for black bear defense. Otherwise a six-shot 856 .38 Special is a better idea. Thanks for sharing.
856 is next on my list. Cant wait to get one!
