Does it have to specifically be a savings account for a mortgage? or can it be as simple as a couple setting aside money in a savings account for future travel together?

if you have not lived together for 12 months as a de facto but have registered your relationship with the registry can you apply for the visa?
Technically yes - but you need to make sure you still meet the four pillars of evidence and have enough documentation.
