Welcome to my channel! My name is Emily Martínez. As a professional singer and actor, I create content for young women with a passion for the arts and help them navigate the ups and downs of the theatrical world, because we all deserve to be empowered and celebrated whether or not we get the part.
I make content for you, the Forever Theatre Kid! You may be a professional performer, like myself, or maybe you did plays in high school and have always had a love for the lifestyle. You know every word to Bohemian Rhapsody, you still play your favorite Tony speeches to pump you up for an audition, you play an annual Hocus Pocus drinking game. YOU have found your new home.
I have very recently finished a huge part of my career as a cruise ship singer, so much of my content is centered around my life as a traveling performer, but you can also find content from past productions and the transitional lifestyle of a performer working her way towards Broadway and beyond!

I have a question! Do broadway dancers make enough money to have a livable life. My dream is to become a broadway dancer but I want to make sure that we earn enough money to live a comfortable life style.

    • @HeyItsSarah30
      @HeyItsSarah30 3 года назад

Kaydin Hughes why don’t you just google how much a broadway dancer typically makes. Then you can kinda see if you think it will be enough to make you comfortable

    •  3 года назад +3

@@kaydinhughes9267 from my experience, every performer on Broadway, especially the ensemble members have some type of side hustle, whether its teaching, dancing, modeling, booking commercials, or many other options in-between gigs and sometimes even during gigs. Living in NYC is a huge expense in itself, and the wages for Bway performers may be very different when the industry comes back. When it comes down to it, there will always be sacrifice when it comes to our profession but you find ways to make your dream work. Maybe that means you don't live in Manhattan proper, maybe that means teaching dance classes at BDC or giving master classes. You make it work the way you need to!
This goes for all types of performance work, not just Broadway.

Union member here (10+years) - You can be offered a union card multiple ways (EMC points, thru a sister union - SAG/AGVA/AGMA, or you are given a principle contract thru which you can earn full membership at point of employment). Don’t rush it. You can refuse your card one time! Keep that in mind.
There are ways to join aside of Broadway/main stream NYC. Many TYA theatre’s offer their principle actors their card.
Also don’t be afraid for audition for shows working in NJ.
Actors Access is my preferred way to find stage auditions.

Great video! Loved the tips as someone who’s only done one Broadway audition in New York so far. Where are the best places to find when non-equity auditions are happening? I haven’t figured out the science behind this that regular auditioned are able to find multiple auditions in one day

Hi:) do you think it’s possible for me, a mix between high alto and lowish soprano, to be considered for a broadway part? I’ve heard before that sopranos are the main ones focused on in auditions:( also, can I still get in if I’m not the best at dancing, but great at singing and generally pretty good at acting? Thank you:)

I really don’t even know what I want becuase I love love love musicals but I’m a trained dancer, I can sing pretty well but I’m obviously a much stronger dancer, I want to try and make it by doing ensemble dance calls but I’m not sure tbh

    •  3 года назад +1

Anya Petravicz I think of you love musicals and you want to be apart of them you should absolutely put yourself out there! Try singing more and more to get yourself more comfortable with that arena of the industry. Try singing and listening for different harmonies of your favorite musical numbers. You don’t have to be a lead actor in a show to be a HUGE asset to the team! A show would be nothing without its strong ensemble who does it all! 💖

I reeeeeally want to be on Broadway. Is there anything I can do to prepare as a kid? How do I become an equity member when I'm older? I have so many questions and it would mean so much if you answered these two. Thanks!

    •  3 года назад +3

Addy M hey!! Of course there is a lot you can do to prepare! You can take voice lessons, dance classes, acting lessons, when you can and when it’s safe wherever you as. Listen to as many musicals you can find, there are a bunch you can find for free to listen to on RUclips and free streaming sights.

    •  3 года назад +3

Addy M to be in equity you have to be cast in a production that will offer points towards the union and once you get enough points you can be equity OR you could claim equity status in a big touring show if they offer it to you. Honestly, when they start having auditions again start going to whatever auditions feel right! Keep putting yourself out there 💖 and have a bunch of patience and keep believing in your dreams and yourself

Hello! :) I hope this isn’t too late, but is it possible for a mezzo soprano/alto to have a role in a broadway show? I’ve heard before that only high sopranos are often accepted and are usually the only ones considered for main parts. Do I still have a good chance? I’m not fully an alto, I have been able to go very high before, but it’s not my usual range. Oh also, I’m not a very good dancer, but my singing and acting is pretty good. How good should I get at dancing before I audition? Thank you:)

    •  3 года назад +7

Honestly, there are so many roles written for mezzos/altos. I don’t know who told you that but it’s a total lie. If you want to audition for Broadway just go for it...don’t let fear get in the way of your dreams. Just practice practice practice!

How do you have a job when you are at auditions all day? I have been trying to figure this out for when I have to do this one day. It would be really helpful to know how to have job while also auditioning!!

    •  3 года назад +2

Hey Lauren! Great question. So I'm going to assume to some capacity this advice will ring true when auditions start again in the future. It all depends on the flexibility of your job. Sometimes you can go to auditions all morning and then go to a night job. Sometimes you work from home and can get stuff done remotely and be at work WHILE you are auditioning (which I feel like more people will encounter when Covid has left us). Sometimes you only audition on your days off. Sometimes you save up money for a few months at a full day job and then take a leave from there to do pilot season and have auditioning be your full time focus. I've done all of these things (well not go to pilot season, but just audition season in general). And it's tough. So you just do the best you can and go to the auditions that you really really want to put your best foot forward in.

Hi, this might be late but I really hope you answer my doubt!!
I am a much stronger singer and actor than I am a dancer, although I can definitely dance, I am not a professional. Do you think I can make it in the industry? Much love 💕

    •  3 года назад +5

Oh babe! It’s never too late!! Honestly, never. There are a lot of people in the industry that aren’t complete triple threats. If you can move really well, and keep rhythm that’s the most important part. Give as much face as possible. Take classes to improve as much as you can. But you don’t have to be the best dancer!
