    Hello from Tasmania Australia. I love this video. We are the parents of the late "Spoggy" the sparrow and we still have "Norbu" the sparrow with us (age 9.5 years old). This video does indeed show things that people should take into account before raising a sparrow and allowing it to be part of their everyday life. It can be very messy, poop and feathers everywhere and yes, sparrows love to attack and bite. But as you say, they also reward you with their cuteness. My male sparrow Norbu watched this video and loved it. He does all the things your sparrow does. Love to you both :-)

    So cool! I began feeding mealworms to a couple of Mockingbirds, outside, several weeks ago. No sooner had I started, than the Robins & Sparrows began coming to get THEIR share, too! Well, the Robins were like "bullying" the Mockingbirds, even chasing them down & "beaking" them, to get a mealworm away from them. I was surprised... cuz I always thought Robins were very kind & gentle to ALL. So I began shooing the Robins away. But the sparrows... heck, they were SO LITTLE. They would NEVER think of trying to BULLY the 2 dear Mockingbirds! So, I let them hang around & get some mealworms, too. BUT, after a couple of weeks, all of a sudden I'm seeing these cute innocent little sparrows getting "entitled" to ALL the mealworms, & even getting aggressive to Mr & Mrs Mockingbird! I was shocked... hense I'm researching more info about them. I think this was a really good article/video you made!

The only thing I want to point out is that by telling your sparrow to stop when it bites you, you are essentially rewarding it with attention. The best way to discourage biting is to immediately return it to its cage. I know this from multiple years of experience raising multiple different species of bird, sparrows included. I have rescued a sparrow few months ago. She still stays with me and spends most of the time outside with other birds coming back home at night. I’m afraid of winter time. Winter in Connecticut USA can be really harsh. Is she going to be OK with cold outdoor temperatures in winter or is better to keep her inside until spring? Any suggestions? I have to admit that she prefers to be outside during the day.

    • @SAKSOON
      @SAKSOON  3 года назад +1

      Winter time is definitely harsh especially for the ones that are facing the new life in wild. However, spring is too far ahead and the bird will get attached to the human, which means that there's a low chance that the bird will survive in wild long enough even if it's warm outside.
      If you are planning to release it, it's better to do it now, I feel like..

    • @Anita_She
      @Anita_She 3 года назад

      @@SAKSOON Thank you for your response. I never wanted to keep her. Even if I love her with all my heart, she belongs to nature not me. The plan was to release her as soon as possible. I found her when she was 4 days old and introduced her to life in wild as soon as the 2nd week of her life while still taking care of her all needs. I never wanted her to attach to me. She never liked to be touched or carried which I thought was a great sign. On the other hand, she loves to hang out and play with other birds. Therefore, I let her go outside every single morning hoping that she will stay, but she’s not. She comes back home at the bad time every single evening. She doesn’t want to leave me and her room permanently. I’m OK with it. She will stay as long as she wants to. Only one thing that scares me is winter. I don’t know how to handle it. I can’t find any relevant information on this topic. Everything I see is about pet birds and what temperature is too cold for them. I don’t consider her as a pet bird. Should I let her continue her daily routine of being outside all day long and spending nights inside in winter or it’s better to keep her inside all the time and wait until it gets warmer? I’m assuming there is going to be at least 40-60 degrees Fahrenheit in temperature difference between indoor and outdoor during that time. Will she accommodate to that temp fluctuation between day/ outside and night/ inside? The window in her room is always half way open, but still the temperature inside will be much higher than outside. She started to grow extra feathers already. So, her body prepares itself for cooler temperatures. Nonetheless, I want to be on a safe side. I don’t want her to get sick and die from cold. Thank you for any suggestions!

    • @SAKSOON
      @SAKSOON  3 года назад +1

      @@Anita_She I totally understand. If she's not letting you touch her or afraid of you, that's absolutely a good sign. Once you release the bird, you probably want to leave some water and food just in case if she can't find food in wild. She will come back and check out your house if she really can't find anything to eat.
      Did she molt for thicker feathers? Wild birds are tougher than birds in captivity. Adult wild birds are capable to survive in cold weather, unless they are sick or injured.
      I strongly believe that your bird will survive since the bird has been communicating with other bird friends and already been exposed to outside world. Just introduce her food that she can find outside such as seed and fruits. Try to not interact with her as much as possible. She must not get attached to you. If she does, there's a high chance that she will approach to random people to look for food and attention.
      Try to release it soon. Earlier is better for the bird so she can learn and get used to the wildlife before it gets too cold.

      Thank you for helping the little birdy 💕
      Please check out my video on "how to make baby bird food" and you need to force feed it if it's not opening its mouth. Press each side of the beak gently with your index and thumb and it will open the mouth. Feed it every 2 hours from 6am to 10pm (if the baby goes to sleep earlier around 8pm due to the darkness, you can just leave it sleeping).
      Please don't give bird water unless it's on the shallow plate that goes up to half of its legs. Moisture in the food should be enough for the baby. Water shouldn't be fed to the baby because it might go through the respiratory system, which can cause death. If you give it fresh water daily in a plate, it will eventually learn how to drink and bath on its own as time goes by.
      Are you thinking about releasing the baby? It's actually better to take the baby to a wild bird rehab (they take down baby sparrows if they are sick, but if it seems healthy, they will take care of it and release it to nature) because babies can be attached to humans so easily and won't be able to survive for long in wild.
      If you put seeds on the ground, the baby will play with it and eventually learn how to eat them on its own as well.
      I hope this will help you and the little birdy 🙂🙂🙂💖

      They can eat anything! I give my sparrow fresh fruits, such as apple, pear, mango, etc. But don't give them too much fruits because they will get diarrhea since fruits contain lots of water. A tiny piece would be good (size of your index fingernail).

      @@SAKSOON . My bird used to fly off my finger when I walked up/down stairs. He almost hit the edge one time and I got so mad and yelled at him. After that he never did it again. Also one time he flew off my finger and tumble down the stairs. Oh, I got mad and yelled at him. Now he never does it again. He chirps to let me know when he's hungry, thirsty, poops and wants go to to bed. If he wants my attention and doesn't like me talking on phone, he starts kissing me several times. Before I would take him to bed at 5p.m. and when I walk upstairs, he turns around and kisses me. Before bed, I make him kiss me 2x before going to bed and of course I kiss him back 2x on his back.
      In the Summer, I would put him down in the kitchen and then tell him to go home. He runs down hallway, past family room, to sunroom, and then climbs up his perch and get into cage. Now I teach him to fly so that his wing muscles get stronger. I count 1, 2 (he crouch down) and then 3, he flies off finger. Or when I say "fly", he flies.

When I go outside for several hours, I tell him "Rainbow, I have to go shopping eg: walmart, 99c store, target, etc., and I'll be back in 1 or 2 hrs ok. He listens to me. I say goodbye to him so that he knows I'm leaving and doesn't think I'm at home. He sits on his perch. Doesn't wander around and have me worried that someone might step on him or gets lost/killed. When I come back, he's still on his perch outside the cage. People say "oh, don't put your finger into cage". Ehhh, wrong. She was a rescue as a baby, and she had some feather issues until she grew up. Not all wild animals carry diseases, especially when they are young.
      It's better to let wild rescue handle any animals in help and release back to nature. However, sparrows are considered invasive pest, so rescues wouldn't take care of them. I have a video in my channel talking about this stuff when I rescued Chili!

    Popping by to say you are a bit misinformed on the diet. Whilst its great to have fresh fruit and veggies in their diets they are actually grain birds, so they mainly will eat oats, seeds and bread products. Mine loves soft wheat tortillas!

      Grains and seeds are Chili's basic daily meal 😆 I'm saying birds can also enjoy fresh fruit and veggies as snacks. Chili would choose to eat them instead of bread and tortillas lol. Idk about other birds, but that's her taste preference 😂😂😂. She actually doesn't like tortilla and bread, or any other blend and dried food 🤔.
