All the Marshall's running towards the track while anyone has a high chance of losing the car there.. why do we allways need an actual accident before we improve safety?
Because sometimes risk is necessary. They were seeing if everything was okay under a yellow. If ALL risk is removed from any sport, it doesn't make it fun anymore, as stupid as it sounds.
Intervention has changed a lot. This incident took place at the old Poste 106, which was where I was stationed as a Marshal at LM until the reorganization took place a couple of years ago. Even in the early 201x’s we routinely pushed cars off a green track, flagged from over the wall, etc. Now things are a little more US-style and while Marshals do some trackside assistance it’s not quite like this any more. Slow zones and FCY has helped a lot too.
I've been to Le Man quite a few times years ago. Back then, it was slide rules and grit. Today, the cars are more akin to rolling computer centers. Much like F1, technology has all but ruined racing. Although I will say, safety has increased so much that very few, if any, drivers are badly injured or worse yet, killed. That rain. Yes, it can indeed ruin half the track while the other half sees sunshine. That is why I love this track more then any other. Its very very competitive. The thing is, its really about endurance. Yes, drivers need to pace themselves. Finding that balance between going all out vs preserving your cars equipment and its integrity. Not easy to do. Porsche has always been on the forefront of that. My favorite spots are the Porsche curves and of course the paddock. Lots of serious action before, during and after the race. At night, I must of stepped on at least several dozen people sleeping right there. It was fun, controlled chaos at times, but this race is bar none my most favorite of all motor sports. 🇩🇪
Seeing Panoz' and Saleens... man I bite my ass I didn't get into racing sooner. Those were some of my favorite cars in my childhood, didn't even know they were racing in Lemans!
Yes, certainly the Panoz was pretty successful at Le Mans, I believe it even won its class one year. The change from GT1 to GT3 regulations put them out for a while but Panoz are working on the development of a GT3 car so it's probably only a matter of time before they're back there and scaring the big names again...
Cheer up, man. You might not be able to see them live, but there are hundreds of archived le mans races on this website that you can watch at any time. Didn't have that in the 90's. Though if you do want some good modern racing, look up reunion races, those are where they bring out a bunch of old cars and drive them like it's those old times all over again.
That was the best time for motorsports, bar none. Speedvision was the absolute best programming with live flag to flag events never seen before, late night motorsport movies, selling of car parts. John Force live on air taking a chainsaw to his dragster to sell parts from. It was one of a kind and never to return. Glad I got to see the channel while it lasted.

Wow, David Hobbs & Bob Varsha......oh for the good 'ole days! When NBCsn took over & hired that twirp Leigh Diffey to take over Varsha's place I couldn't believe it! Diffey's high-pitched caterwauling & constant talking about inane blather while team radios were on, made F-1 unwatchable in the USA. I was so glad when ESPN & Sky took over so I could watch with the volume up again. But Bob Varsha & David Hobbs still can't be beaten for F-1 announcers.
@Zachary Thomas Nah, it's because Jack and Dario talk too much, and poor Bob is there like the third-wheeler. He makes great jokes, though, so he adds something special to the broadcast even though he adds little to nothing. And about that comment, you're completely wrong, FormulaE is getting more and more exciting. This year we've seen 6 races, and we had 6 different winners. It's the closest Championship I've seen since Formula 1 in 2012 after the first 7 races or so
@Zachary Thomas you are a dickhead man. you clearly haven't watched much formula E. Slow cars, no sound, bad tracks, crap production are all totally fair complaints. But the racing is anything but boring
Typically the american commentator has to include advertising and self promotion in his commentary. Everyone else just talks about the weather, the cars or the race.
8:20 clueless marshal signalling LMP1 car to slow down with his hands cracks me up, the car is going as slow as it can, any slower and the ceramic brakes wont work, someone needs to educate marshals that these are not road cars and there is a minimum speed to work safely, any slower and you have no brakes..
Before you have to question if you'll have brakes, question if you even have tyre grip. That's what the marshall was hinting at. If you consider that clueless, well...
Yeah, speed does not affect brake performance, temperature does. While it’s true that cold brakes are an issue, both ceramic and carbon/carbon brakes have a significant amount of thermal mass once they are up to temperature... that is to say, once hot they tend to stay hot unless you spend a good amount of time not pushing them (several laps behind a safety car for example) and even then you can keep them at/bring them up to operating temperature if you know what you’re doing. You can drive a race car at 1mph if you wanted and at that speed, even cold brakes will work... the issue you’d run into is engine heat.
Easy on the poor volunteer marshalls who get paid expenses or nothing at all and are soooo important to keeping all types of races running smoothly. Also many of the marshalls are fanatical motorports fans that will know a huge amount about the cars.
Who's here after 2023 mayhem?
Me. It’s by far the most chaotic 24 hours of lemans race I’ve ever seen.
These cars and circuit bring back memories of Gran Turismo 4!

The last Le Mans with the original layout between Dunlop bridge and Tertre Rouge. Lookes so much better compared to the desert from nowadays 😢
This video didn't even show the accident, just the aftermath and cleanup.
