    When you had a bit of a cough, it reminded me how much I love you don’t edit videos to pieces! So many people have horribly edited videos now, in addition to the folks that go over the top superfluous graphics and music. With your videos, it’s like sitting down with you and getting the real Ralfy. After all these years, I don’t see you changing, but please don’t! Love what you do!

    My first experience with peated whisky was a disaster, I thought the bottle had gone bad (Bowmore 12 yr), I returned to the store...the look on the salesman's face is still etched in my memory... But now I enjoy heavily peated whisky tremendously. Years later my second introduction to peated malt was Ardbeg's An Oa. LOVED IT!. and haven't looked back! This is very addictive stuff. The same thing happened with IPA beers. I can't drink beer if it doesn't have a high IBU. This is what happens when one attends Ralfy's malt university! 😊 Thanks!

    I totally agree with the stocking up idea.
    I have been buying up favorites and must say a few I was too late to repurchase...As the price of whisky goes up, this practice is even more important and as whiskies change.
    I am still able to find Billy Walker era Glendronachs and am buying as many as my budget will afford.
    Same goes for the Clynelish based Spice Tree...the formula was changed earlier this year.
    I also saw Clynelish 14 for $45us the other day at an small grocery store...
    An exciting time of year to buy whisky!

    Greetings Ralfy,
    Seeing you pull that 1990 Signatory Un-Chillfiltered Collection Caol Ila out of its metal tube was like watching a seasoned magician pull a rabbit out of his hat. You're in for a big treat when you pop the cork on it. I bought one about 5 years ago that had indeed been languishing on a local shop's shelf since about 2007-2008. We opened it to celebrate New Year's Eve 2017 and it was absolutely delightful. As you say, "off profile" in a subtle, wonderful way. All the best and Happy Holidays to you sir. Slaìnte!

    I think I have a bottle of TEN from 2004 on the shelf… I recently went back to Bunnahabhain after few years and was blown away by the 12 year old. To be honest with you I wasn’t expecting much from it with all the marketing going on with whisky nowadays. But boy was I wrong. It has all the ”specs” in order. Un-chill filtered, natural colour etc. But so integrity malt with a reasonable price tag. Tasted also 18yo and it was even better but for the price it is not that much better over 12yo.

    Before clicking the video I knew Ledaig was there because I bought it a few times. Certainly agree with Ardbeg 10. It's great. 10 year old whisky is where I enjoy peated whisky without losing too much of the phenolic characteristics. Well said Ralfy 🤝

    Honestly I prefer Ardbeg’s Wee Beastie over the 10. It’s not only a little cheaper, but he packs a crisper and smokier punch. The 10 is just too in between for me to buy it often. I either buy the beastie or I splurge on one of the higher up in the line.

    • @VinegarAndSaltedFries
      @VinegarAndSaltedFries 2 года назад +1

      Wee Beastie is interesting. For me I love putting a young age statement and what it stands for, I just find for my palette it to be very unbalanced. The smoke dominates far to much and the character of the cask and distiller goes a bit quiet. Definitely love the price. That’s why I prefer the 10 to the wee beastie. But both fantastic drams.

    Got a couple of Ardbeg in my stash (probably 2 x 10y and either Uigeadail or Corryvreckan), maybe a miniature Ledaig 10 and some Caol Ila (definitely a Signatory Cask Strength, maybe also an unchillfiltered from Signatory, 1 standard and maybe 2 D.E. If I open it and see that it clearly is not for me I just return the second bottle. When I finish a bottle, if I loved it, I will try to find another bottle as opposed to opening my second. I'm really curious what the still young island distilleries like Torabhaig and Lagg will be able to come up with over the next decade, because I've been enjoying Ledaig 10yo and 18yo so much over the past few years. It's nice to get some top shelf peat from outside of Islay.

    What can be done about Bowmore? There has to be gold in those vaults that gets neutered at bottling. Can we use the power of the OSWAs to perform a community buyout? Or a hostile takeover?

      It's so sad because when I drink an Bowmore OBs, I enjoy them as a glimpse of what they could be. I love the Dorus Mor/Tempest and had one Signatory few years ago. It's amazing what can be experienced from Bowmore. I would, at least accept a little e150 if they could just ring the 12 up to 43% and 15 and 18 to 46% and unchillfiltered. it would probably be my go to distillery.

      @@suenteuspo9483 the potential is there. I think Beam Suntory are using too many casks that are spent. Some more first fill ex bourbon in there would be a good start then look at the presentation. It could be a Bruichladdich or Springbank as they have the malt floors to do their own thing. One day hopefully we will see it reborn.

    Hi, Ralfy -- (Realizing I've neglected months' worth of posts, I'm digging back. Good time, of course.) Your talk about Caol Ila goes, I think, some distance to suggest why John Glaser/Compass Box typically use that liquid (Clynelish is a big fave, as well). At that, there's the whole bidness of what distillates go into that big brand, JW, where Glaser was previously blending.
    In any case, that's for both the reinforcing tip about Caol Ila via indie bottlers and... the tip of the hat to Ledaig 10, which I'm always quick to recommend to people who've already extensively navigated the Islay peateds. Lovely stuff. (I assume, btw, the color is due to Tobermorey's default ex-Spanish sherry caskings. Otherwise, I'd be suprised if they added. Someone else, below, says the website is clear they don't. I'll check a bottle at work tomorrow.)
    Cheers, Sir. I've several tabs of postings to go through -- just this afternoon. ;)

    I have 3 Ledaig 10s stashed away as well, as well as 3 of their NAS Sinclair Rioja, which makes for a simple, straightforward but very tasty sweet farmy peat moment. They were available for just north of 30 euro each here, which is a bargain for that quality, especially at this moment in time.

    In the US, the only Islay that's reasonably priced is Ardbeg 10 which goes for about $50 a bottle. Just about everything else goes for $65 and up. Lagavulin 16 is now around $90 so I've never even owned a bottle. Sorry, I'm not spending that much on a bottle of something I'm just going to drink.

    • @InWeCome
      @InWeCome 2 года назад +1

      Lagavulin 16 is €75 here now, used to be less. Some prices are going up probably because of high demand, hence there is now the Lagavulin 8 to fill the gap.
