    Intertitle - "The night of January 5th 1867, Near the Parish Church". A man with a log coat and tall hat nervously knocks on a door with an umbrella. A man with a lamp answers. Intertitle - "There's a light in the Church!". Over at the church a light flickers in the window. Both men go out into the street. The man calls out and people look out of their windows. The church is now engulfed in flames. Intertitle - "And now, Croydon the modern". Panoramic view of Croydon, rows of terraced houses, building with a large clock. Close-up of a gate with "Catherine Street" sign. A man crosses the road wheeling a bicycle, buses drive past, sign of "George Street". Outside East Croydon railway station, people milling about waiting, cars and bicycles parked. Close-up of High Street sign.
