@@Whomobile i feel it more like a weird type of nostagia like you are having memories from a time you never lived it's kinda weird because you are having nostalgia over something you never experienced but it's also kind of a heartwarming feeling
Partly the liminal spaces whomobile is mentioning, but I think it's also the unpolishd and amateurish feel of these maps that make them feel so relatable and oddly pleasant. Kinda like how a good B-movie often speaks to you more directly than a AAA-movie. Also kinda the "individualism" feel of the early internet that's being captured in webcore / vaporwave, I think that has to do with it too.
@@thecommunistloli1042 Its cause most of us first started playing source kids as games. its like the feeling you get looking at your old school after you moved up a grade or you graduate or like looking at a copy right date on something old and has a date ending in a single digit
Whelp, I've already spotted 1 error, I called this map xc_ddt_tixi when it's acutally xc_dtt_tixi, simple mistake but it will haunt me forever now. At least I could fix the thumb and title.
This brings back so many memories! I always assumed that xc_ maps are more about the journey (no timer, longer, slower) and kz_ about the destination (timer, finishing and restarting multiple times, lots of bunny hopping).
Love this video! I'm actually looking for two ancient maps from my childhood, they keep reappearing in my dreams and have lots of significance for me. Despite my memory shifting since then, my mind keeps tugging me towards finding them. No luck however, can't find any leads as they're either 1.6 or source maps. Nonetheless if anyone has any suggestions, please comment! Very important to me. First is a climb map set at night, raining, as you clamber either blocks or rooftops. it has a deer + stadium in separate sections outside the map, weird right? Second map is some sort of arena/lobby that has out of map sections as well. One of these sections has a car spinning on a pedestal in a black room. I can't remember if it was a dojo, a spa.. but it came off as an arena or mini game gamemode. edit: Vague but it's all I got, I swear these are real maps. I've spent nearly three months in collected hours browsing gamebanana for any semblance of them, or anything even remotely similar. Wish I had more details.
I noticed the way you "strafe jump" is kind of strange, and then it hit me. You aren't doing it right. The trick is to jump forward, and then hold a / d and move the mouse in the same direction to REALLY crank a turn in the air. It's the same trick for bhopping
Idk if they are holding forward and strafing which is eating their jump or if they are turning way too fast and end up moving against the direction they are turning.
you could hold A (while moving the camera to the left) or D (while moving the camera to the right) instead of hold W when doing strafe jumps or and kinda of strafes is more easy and practical.
completely separate from the parkour just the liminal space vibe from the ambience and bizarre surreal geometry is fun it's relaxing yet creepy I love it
Omg I forgot sass existed. Thanks for unlocking that lost memory. I used to play on the death run servers alot but the climb servers were awesome. Maybe I ran into you all those years ago! Great video!
I used to love these types of maps whenever I'd hop into G-Mod. The servers that I used to frequent had plenty of chill music that'd just play as you climb. Always felt so good to beat a hard map. Nostalgia at its finest
Love to see this unknown maps that people put so much dedication into making it, also kudos for not giving up on the strife jumps, i would no-clip over it all, i'm more of exploring maps rather than parkour
Huh, I spent some years on HL2 DM, and there were several puzzle servers with climbing sections in their maps. A couple server still runs. It is funny to see that this phenomaly of game mode is taking roots in Halo custom servers too.
as someone who extensively practiced the art of the circlejump/strafejump in quake 3 arena when i was 13 but was also never that great at it, the trick is smooth and gradual movements of the mouse for example, if you want to do a strafejump around the left side of something, like in that dev texture room area, i would look roughly 45 degrees to the left of the pillar, run and jump, let go of W, hold crouch, hold D, and gradually move your mouse to the right til you land. yes, you have to let go of W, it interferes with turning in the air. the amount you need to move your mouse depends on you sensitivity, of course. think of it like drawing a nice little curve around the obstacle with your movement.
I'd love to see some Zombie Mod or Zombie Escape maps, there's a lot of interesting ze maps in particular that I remember playing throughout the years.
its crazy how strangely interconnected players of the Sassilization are like I'm pretty sure that we've bumped shoulders and never realized it till now. I played soooo many hours on their servers
This video topic feels very personal to you, it feels refreshing in the grand scheme of youtube~ Btw, i'm not 100% familiar with Garrys Mod physics, but I know in TF2 at least you want to curve gradually using a/d to steer your stafe jumps. Rather than Making a full 180 you're looking to make a nice 90 degree turn roughly. The W button only slows you down when going for strafe jumps. Not sure if the same stands true in Gmod but hopefully it helps your strafe jump play in the future
Pro tip for strafe jumps like those down the line: Try to line up as parallel as you can with the direction you want to go. It can be a little tricky to get the setup, as you have to not ram yourself into the wall, but it also means you have to strafe a LOT less. If you line up your jump perpendicular, like you were doing, it makes it so you have to strafe almost a full 180 degrees- which is ridiculously difficult in those small jumps.
Nice to see a weird map you have some personal connections with, it adds to the Source™ experience, I think. Also, I believe strafejumps are easier in CS:S than in GMod, latter of which has a longer and stiffer jump that is harder to control in more precision-demanding areas (in my opinion, at least).
There was/is a mod for this game type called kreedz climbing. It gives you the ability to click to save location and teleport back as well as you hold a climbing pick. You should check that out sometime. Had a fun time with friends trying to climb really strange looking maps
Ach, and here I was hoping they wouldn't use stock CS textures. Guess that was a silly thought. Still, I'm surprised I've never seen something like this for TF2 before, I wonder if they exist somewhere...
This map sort of reminds me of boneworks. alot of parkour, physics objects and yellow and orange words on the wall plus the singular colors and ambience.
I thought that might be the case, I originally had a section discussing that even though CSS, CS:GO and Gmod run on the same game engine, they all have slight differences in thier movement mechanics. I don't understand it enough to go into detail and it felt like excessive detail so I left it out.
I swear there used to be a climb gamemode out there somewhere, but it wouldn't surprise me if its years due an update considering Garry changed how Glua works so many times... If you really wanted to make a new climb gamemode tho there's probably a surf gamemode still around that changes jumping mechanics to be closer to CS:S, all you'd need to do is steal that bit of the code and add a checkpoint system then you're golden :A)
Manor of fun next please! It was my favourite map to hang out with random people on a server, name of which I long forgot. It's a shame that it closed :(
Do those strafe jumps really need 180° spins? I think you need to practice strafe jumps, you are supposed to let go of forward and only strafe in the air, holding the key of the direction you need to go while turning into it good stuff
Love your videos man, please cover the zombie survival maps from garrys mod! There's lots of just nice or interesting ones, and you gotta cover ones like vertigo.

hey Whomobile i really like the music played on the teal colored room section of the video. I guess its made by you? Where can i find the song i cant find it anywhere

WEIRD MAPS ARE BACK
I REPEAT WEIRD MAPS ARE BACK
WOOOOOO YEAAAAAAH BABY THAT'S WHAT WE'VE BEEN WAITING FOR
THAT'S WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT WOOOOOOO
watching you do those strafe jumps basically backwards gives reminds me of my early days playing deathrun maps
the staicase part feels like one of those nightmares where you're too small for stairs you you have to slowly crawl up them

I'm pretty sure you can ask reddit community. They usually good at finding vague-described stuff.
funny, you even called them strafe jumps but you didn't strafe at all. it's like surf you gotta hold a/d to air strafe
I never said I was good at them
I love the extra effort you put into editing with this one. Hope it's a sign of things to come!
Glad to see another full length Weird Maps video! I know they're a lot of work, but they are way more satisfying.
30+ mins of information for a weird map. Me like and me approve.

completely separate from the parkour just the liminal space vibe from the ambience and bizarre surreal geometry is fun it's relaxing yet creepy I love it
Climb maps were always my favorite of the custom modes in source games. Sass just had a nice community of people who just enjoy climbing things.
Omg I forgot sass existed. Thanks for unlocking that lost memory. I used to play on the death run servers alot but the climb servers were awesome. Maybe I ran into you all those years ago!
Great video!
I swear this series is just pure nostalgia.
Relaxing video as always, love this series of videos.
I wonder if these were somehow the inspiration for classic Roblox Obbys. Timeline adds up and you even have little fun rooms at the end.
I get alot of nostalgia seeing these kinds of maps, reminds me of some of the weird jump puzzles people would make with props.
Glad to see that there's another video for this series, it was worth the wait
It is good day to be not dead!

this has a krez climbing mod feeling to it and it sets off my weak bhop/climbing skill almonds

You need to make sure you set sv_accelerate and sv_airaccelerate to high number, just like on Surf maps. It makes strafe jumping so much easier.
Love to see the series back
yay full length videos!
That last area felt very David Lynch right down to the electricty.
