I think in spite of being established as a klutz, Varian is quit quick on his feet and is capable of dodging. But I also think that if Cassandra had swiped at him with the intent to actually harm him, especially with him being as close to her as he was, I think she would have made contact and really hurt him and he wouldn't have gotten out of the way in time. Cassandra was really pulling her punches when it came to Varian.
