- Pale Court is a fan made Hollow Knight expansion, mostly focused around adding new difficult bosses to the game. These bosses being the other 4 great knights of Hallownest, along with a secret 5th boss you may recognize. Hope you enjoy my playthrough, and thanks to everyone who helped make this mod a reality.

its so cute that ogrim in the background turns his head to look at the side of the arena that isma is on and also how in the boss rush when isma is beaten ogrim catches her when she falls
It actually depends which you defeat first. If you defeat ogrim last, Isma catches him and jumps away with him. It's an amazing touch

Traitor Lords journal entry would suggest otherwise. There's also nothing to suggest the gender of all Mantis warriors/youth/traitors/Petras is female either from what I've read

I love the attention to detail in trying to keep it fit in with the feel of the rest of hollow knight. I think the team did an amazing job
yeah, when I first saw it I thought it was from team cherry so I think the team can really be proud of themselves for making such a beautiful and amazing mod. I'm a bit sad that I can't play it since I'm on switch but I've had a lot of fun watching everyone else play it and having so much fun. I really love being a part of the hollow knight community, it's always fun to see what great things the modding community has achieved over the years
I don't want to undermine this amazing effort and it's quality too, but that said i do think the bosses feel nothing like the normal game's. Each one's patterns feel off, a bit too fast, a bit unreactable or not satisfying to avoid. So i'm really more impressed with the dev team and their journey than what they actually ended up with
@@Reinoirothey have the pace of the sisters of battle boss fight or something like NKG. I personally thing they’re good because they actually take skill to beat unlike a good portion of HKs base game bosses
@@kirin8735 Nkg and sisters have significantly more balanced and fair attacks. Compared to like the random full screen shockwave attacks either in the middle of Ze'mer's combos or in Hegemol fight where his attacks very quickly stack on each other, where they seriously clash with shade dash's pretty impactful cooldown. Not to mention actual healing windows. I don't think there is more than 1 or 2 max healing windows, and all of them are way too tight and scuffed. Nkg is a hard boss but despite that almost every attack has a healing window. Of course i'm not expecting fans to make something amazing and again in no way do i undermine their effort, but i just think their work here deserves a little bit more critisism
@@ReinoiroI feel like the unfairness and overall difficulty was what the devs were aiming for, so while I agree they wouldn’t fit in with normal hollow knight bosses that much I don’t think it’s necessarily a negative to make different types of bosses if you understand what I mean
This fan mod is the exact reason why quick focus exists, so you can heal even against fast bosses

Yeah the community is awesome and really talented but the most unfunniest community at the same time as well, as much as i love hollow knight, i can’t pass them up on their humour 💔
I love all the little details in this mod, like how Ze’Mer’s girlfriend stands in the background as she fights you, or all the interactions between Ogrim and Isma
It feels like the backgrounds of the fights show you either what the knights want the most, or care about the most. Ze’Mer has her love in a field of delicate flowers, Hegemol stands in the bustling city that he was seemingly tasked to defend, Isma had Ogrim, and Dryya had the White Lady who she died defending
And the fact that in ZeMer's fight, the traitor lords daughter eyes follow Ze'mer istead of the knight unlike in godhome where the god seekers study you. It's a nice detail showing how she cares for Ze'mer.
Literally when I noticed Ogrim waching over the Isma fight and Traitor's Child watching over the Ze'mer fight there was a tear in my eyes 🥺

fits with white defender's background...he longs for his friends that have long since passed away (maybe, Hegemol's fate is unconfirmed its assumed the grub killed him...but at the same time, he might be one of the other characters considering he's fairly small)
also would have been a fun addition if a godhome ze'mer didn't fight, but the traitor lord's daughter fought harnessing the essence of godhome to gain the powers her father gained through infection

I love the Pale Court but because of the difficulty I'll probably never get to play through it
The art is so good in this tho, I love the plant attacks of Isma and the beautiful city background of Hegemol!

I like how some of the attacks the five knights do are taken from Pure vessel. Dryya has a floor spear attack, Isma does a vine whip like PV’s void whip. It fleshes out the idea that the vessel learned from them.

Defenders crest goes from stink to axe body spray. And to be frank, I don't know which is worse
just wanna add, strength + fury + abyssal bloom on 1 mask does 80 damage per hit. do with that information what you will

Imo my favorite bosses are Isma and Hegemol. They are just so cool. Hegemol with all the fake outs and like his quick attacks compared to his large stature. Then isma closing in the arena and making a tight bullet hell.

The best part of this, the creator acknowledged isma and ogrim, so they designed isma's move set to be strong by itself while also being complimentary to ogrim
A fanmade expansion made for fans . It's really amazing how they managed to make it look like official dlc. The soundtrack, the bosses and the content we're all made perfectly , except Isma i hate her. The Devs really put a lot of work into this!

The Isma fight reminded me of Elder Hu, but instead of easy and annoying it looked hard and annoying
Actually I didn't find Isma that annoying radiant it was actually really fun but idk I prefer radiant markoth to like ten of the other bosses so I'm probably very wierd

@elias.t oh right my bad🤦♀️ it's basically a format of fighting a boss in godhome where they have more health, you die in one hit and sometimes the arena is changed slightly (e.g. markoth's radiant arena has no floor)

As someone who has completed pantheon 5, this looks like the difference in difficulty between false knight and pantheon 5 is about the same as the difference between pantheon 5 and this mod. Absolutely metal
My honest opinion is that actually these bosses are mostly like p4 difficulty, (they feel a little like grimm and pv that the main trouble is learning attacks but once you got it its fine) but mystic zemer is just like a little bit harder than abs rad. It's been a long time since I fought normal bosses though so idk

Imo Dryya is pretty easy (maybe Sly difficulty?), and the rest are like abs rad difficulty barring Zemer
i do think that they require a bit more balancing. the strength differences between champions + effectiveness of attacks definitely feels a little off.
Seeing the different ways the creators showed a time before the fall of hallownest was really cool
The fan made bossses are so cool and the areana to mighty hegimol has a lot of details like bugs using the tram
Also the people who made the bosses made the ze mer’s attacks harder to read because its mysterious ze mer

dude the fight compilations from hegamol to zemir are so smooth, and to think that u cut out the isma, ogrim, and dryya fights like I WONDER HOW LONG THIS TOOK AND HOW GOOD U BECCAME LIKE DANG
They took like 5 hours for the whole video, which is crazy to me that they're that good, it took me like a full day to get to mystic zemer and I would consider myself relatively decent at the game
Ismas and Ogrims teamwork is so strong, they even help eachother with their attacks 33:17
Okay when Hegemol spawned on top of Skurry I actually laughed so loud
"what is happening?" *white flash* quickly followed by the only twitch chat message visible being "good luck!" and then skurry dying was truly poetry
also, when hollow knight got called the "dark souls of metroidvanias"... this mod team really took that to heart. i love seeing so many complex and interesting mechanics that only ever got used in one or two of the more difficult boss fights showing up here to really highlight hallownest's greatest warriors and their skillsets. my singular criticism would probably be with the background of the dryya fight since the white lady makes it SO hard to see what's going on, but overall its so beautifully done
The common problem that plagues all these new bosses seems to be overly detailed and bright backgrounds that distract you from attacks or make them difficult to see.
Honestly the backgrounds didn't give me any trouble, I think Skurry's use of axe body spray was causing the problem.
The _foreground_ on the other hand...
I also read a thread where the sfx come a little bit after some attacks. So there's no real telegraph.
Its more with bosses awkwardly freezing and having inconsistent sprites
Seeing the city of tears bustling with activity is the last thing I expected to see but it's so crazy and awesome.

I watched the floorspike-dive in slow motion and it seems to me that the invincibility window is significantly shorter than that of d-dark.
I don't think so, the animation just lasts much longer so you still think you're invincible

Your frames are supposed to last as long as you don't have control of the knight plus some. When I had that charm on, and only when, I would always get hit by whatever I dove directly onto.
Frankly it's pretty balanced considering the damage and the fact that you can just not dive directly on a hitbox
@@laurawitch3099 Yes, I too found out while fighting: getting hit without understanding why and then watching back the footage. But indeed it's better like this, it just requires some little adaptations in positioning.
I feel like a cool thing would have been to have Pure Vessel in thr boss rush too
Kind of a spoiler but when you beat the boss rush the knights have dialogue that implies you're playing the role of the Hollow Knight, and this is a dream recreation of the training it went through. So you kinda are the Pure Vessel in this

This mod is peak fun and pain I like the little messages when you beat one of the three and the secret hall of gods boss (won't say who) plus the credits secret in Dryya's fight
This mod dud the one thing you'd never expect to see in the vanilla game: giving downwards dash an actual use

Funny enough, I really loved the Isma fight but I couldn't stand the True Knight fight.
Spideringling + Grubsong is really good against Isma since the spiders don't have much issue killing the plants and the soul refill is really helpful. I really like running Quick Focus + Shape of Unn. That combo is actually also really good against Grey Mourner since you can just outrun her while also healing (especially during the earlier phases). QF+Unn is also nice into Isma because the projectiles and mobs are pretty avoidable with only horizontal movements and Isma won't run you down, especially during the phase where she vine. But yeah, between those three, Isma was my favorite. She felt like she hit this really nice sweet spot where she was complicated enough to not be boring but not too complicated to be overwhelming. The fight just felt incredibly fair. Which those two things together are hard to make in a bullet-spam fight (especially so in something like Hollow Knight where the character lacks consistent ranged options). Like, almost all of the base-game enemy spam and bullet-spam fights just felt really boring. The only exception to that was Radiance (and potentially Absrad, I never fought her tho).
I haven't seen the other bosses yet tho and I don't want to spoil myself.

Since nobody seems to know (based off reading chat) that is the traitor’s child, the traitor Lord’s child who we deliver the flower to. Her story is that she fell in love with the grey mourner (Le’mer is her actual name I think) and she was killed for it, hence why she is know the grey mourner.

Mods like this really make me hate Skurry's chat sometimes. It really feels like they are not allowed to struggle with learning new boss patterns without their chat saying "this seems unfun" or "this is badly designed" or "this is unfair." This has happened across a lot of games.
It makes a lot of sense for someone, even if they're really good at games, to have some difficulty learning new boss fights and new telegraphs for attacks. It's just really frustrating seeing this extremely creative and relatively well-made mod getting unfairly criticized just because Skurry wasn't immediately good at it. All of the attacks are fair and well-telegraphed; Skurry just wasn't familiar with them.
Yeah I saw someone go "Oh that's... fair" when Dryya came in after the Ogrim/Isma fight in champion's call. Like those are two of the easier fights in the mod and it's only a 4-boss boss rush it ain't that bad 😭
I will say that the mod did feel unfair at times when I was playing it tho, a lot of the telegraphs are really similar, and it's next to impossible to tell which move is which when obstructed by the foreground (particularly for Dryya and Ze'mer). And Tiso just doesn't telegraph his moves which I didn't like at all. On top of that Ze'mer's sword throw having a version where she just sends it in a completely different direction with no warning was frustrating, and sometimes it felt like I got put into situations where I just couldn't avoid damage with certain move combos (Ze'mer and Hegemol mainly because of their Traitor Lord-esque shockwave attacks).
Still really good for a fanmade expansion though, and none of that stopped me from beating the mod in like 2 days so it isn't that unfair at all 👍
I am not bashing the devs at all, we need to be grateful this even exists, but to be fair the bosses really aren't the best or up to snuff with the original's. A lot of moves mix together poorly, some are too complex or hard to read, the full-screen shockwave attacks of Zemer and Hegemol are conpletely unfair because if you used the dash earlier you are completely screwed, and in hegemol's case it's completely up to rng wether you dodge straight into his next attack or not

Hegemol is such a cool fight, taking an existing boss that doesn’t know how to fight at all, and giving it a completely different fighting style
Edit: I love how in the Isma fight, Ogrim is spectating like the God Seeker does, and neither one pays attention to the vessel, they are entirely focused on the boss
skurry not using weaver+grubsong for isma is a wild choice to make that fight so much harder than it has to be
Also I found from personal experience that you can cheese Dryya and Hegemol by hugging the wall charging crystal dash and never releasing it, they can never hit you there(except with very slow attacks that you can just release the dash to dodge) and the spiders slowly chip them down, only way I could ever beat Champion's Call lmao
Lol during the Isma fight when Skurry said "You suck Isma" it kind of sounded like they said my name because they sound similar and Skurry's voice sounds exactly like my friend's from school so I was like "Wha! That's so mean!" For a second bc I was zoned out. Just thought that was funni :P

How we feelin about the balance? Like obviously this is incredibly well done and the bosses are post endgame difficulty, but I can't tell if they're well balanced or just hard by being unfair
dryya is probably the most balanced but is practically made unfair because of how white the battle is. you can't see shit because she and her attacks blend with the background so much
This mod looks really well done, but I'm not one for super hard boss fights so thanks Skurry for suffering through it instead lol.

I think the only thing I dislike about this mod so far is how Dryya and Zemer blend so well with the background. The attention to details is incredible though, and the movesets are amazing
