Such a fine teacher, very well done and camera work too. Thanx for no distracting music or cutesy trying to be entertaining. I love how you warned of the pitfalls all of which I have wrestled with. Bravo and Blessings!
Made my first ever knit sock thanks to your tutorials! I am working on the 2nd sock now. Thank you so much for sharing! I'm not a knitter (normally crochet) so your videos helped immensely!
Amazing!! I don't know why I found your video first, when I searched toe-up socks, but I'm so glad I did. I am now on my 3rd pair, made with different wools for different size feet! And I'm addicted to knitting socks right now. I've been kitting since I was 4 and didn't think there was anything new to learn, until I got this bee in my bonnet that I wanted to knit socks. It's super easy and I have adapted it to suit my needs. Thank you SO much!! 😁😁😁
Oh my goodness, thank you!!! This series is excellent!! I was determined to learn toe up and German short rows, I just finished the heel portion of my first sock and it looks amazing, considering I was expecting another mess. I've watched so many videos and your instructions are far and away the best! Thank you again, I'll be addicted to socks now!
I just want to thank you so much for this series of videos. It's very clear and easy to follow and I'm so glad I've made my first pair of toe-up socks! They are so comfy and fit perfectly!
My grandma used to knit, she never taught me nor my mom. And i guess i was such a tomboy i wouldnt have been a good student but i was always captivated by the motion and mechanical precision of the act of knitting. Its why i went into engineering in university xD thank you for this. Im gonna try to make this but im kinda clumsy and oafish.
I just adore this series. I've been looking through so many videos and internet sites to knit socks but this series made it so simple for me to learn. Thank you!
as a side video, you should include how to cast on for two at a time on the circular needles... just cast on for a second sock from a different ball of yarn on the same needles. it's such a time saver. thanks for the vids... you've done a great job.
@@NewLeafDesigns I have second sock syndrome whenever I complete knitting the first sock and it takes me days (sometimes even a week) to get started on the second sock. I love how the instructions are so clear that I'll experiment how to cast on 2 at the same time...will be tricky but worst case scenario I'll just transfer one pair onto another needle set to get the working yarn and stitches in the right place and then transfer them back onto magic loop. Thanks for sharing this very useful tutorial 🙂

Thank you so much Tracy! As a matter of fact, I actually posted a DK weight sock pattern today on my website: www.newleafdesigns.nl It uses the same techniques as in my toe up sock videos 😊
Thank you so much! Great question regarding mittens. They are often started at the cuff but you could of course use this cast on method to knit them from the tips to the cuff. I don't see how it would be any different from socks :)
So glad I just found your channel. It is so easy to see what you are doing and your voice is clear and easy to follow. Thanks so much. I have subscribed.
Nice and clear, just what I needed right now. I especially love that you do it with both DPN's and Circular needles because I'm trying to learn with both. My next big step will be a simple sweater (not so subtle a hint.) Thanks for making such a good tutorial .
Alan Haenni haha thanks for the hint! I am not completely comfortable with sweater knitting yet but I'll put it on my ideas list :) so glad you enjoyed the video! I found it very difficult to convert patterns from circular needles to dpns, so I wanted to make sure to cover that :)
Omg thank you! I have been trying this cast on and I have difficulty in knitting the first needle. I didn't think of going through the back stitch. Made it so much easier!! Thank you soooooo much! 😊😘
So when you loop the top yarn around the bottom needle, if you don't come in through in between the needles (but from the bottom, like the top needle) you don't have to knit the first row from the back loop. Feels so much less fiddly for me personally. Lovely clear explaination though! Keep it up. 👍
Yes, exactly! I'm used to looping both yarns from the inside to the outside, but you can totally do it this way to avoid the twisted knitting dueing the first row. Thank you for your comment!
Hi Carmen, Do you have any tricks for avoiding ladders when knitting with 3 DPNs? For some reason, I am fine when transitioning to and from knitting the front of the sock... but I am getting a ladder where the 2 needles cross for the bottom of the foot. Any tips? Thanks!
Hi Jake, thanks for your question! Hmm that's a tough one.. I suppose you have tried it already to tug the first st on a Dpn a little tighter, that usually helps. Also make sure the dpns you are switching between aren't too far apart, so they don't put strain on the yarn. If it persists, I would recommend switching to Addi Crasy Trio needles where you only knit with 2 flexible dpns. Happy knitting!
Hi! For this pair I've used 2 colours of Scheepjes Invicta yarns, a heathered oatmeal colour and a dark green. You can find more info about the yarns here: newleafdesigns.nl/2017/05/30/simple-toe-up-socks/
Hi Tina, good question! You can hold the cable of the "back" to the needle you're going to knit next. I'm showing this in another video at around 8:30 minutes: ruclips.net/video/5kcGuK5ESZQ/видео.html
Hi there - I made my first pair of socks that fit using your pattern and it fit! Such happiness!! :D Thank you very much for a great tutorial. Is the German short row the same as FLK?
Aparajitaa Rao-Counter Thank you so much for your comment! I'm glad you enjoy it :D I haven't done a FLK heel myself so I don't know if it's the same, but I was wondering too because the result looks the same.
This might be a dumb question but the picture shows a green toe with an oatmeal body. The video shows the oatmeal. Just making sure I start with green yarn first because it’s the toe? Never made socks before so I want to get it right :)
Hi! That's not a dumb question at all :) If you want to get exactly the same socks, yes you cast on with the dark green and change to oatmeal later. Just for instruction purposes, I thought it would be easier to see if I showed the cast on with the oatmeal colour yarn. Happy knitting!
Hi! Thank you for your suggestion! I'm not a big fan of 2 at a time socks myself, but I might film a tutorial on it anyway :) Your feedback is always appreciated!
Thanks Carmen for your sock videos. I am gauge challenged. Any thoughts on how to achieve the correct gauge for knitting socks? Thanks again for explaining knitting socks:)
Hello Susie, thank you for your comment and apologies for my late reply! I don't really measure my gauge for socks, what is most important for me is the density of the stitches. I like a very dense fabric for socks! So usually, I knit with 2,25mm needles. If the sock yarn is quite thick I will use 2,5mm needles. You can try to use 60 stitches for your socks, as this size fits most people. The thing that matters most in sizing is the lenght of the foot of the sock. Just try it out and after a while you will find how to knit socks that are perfect for you!
Hi Carmen. Love your tutorial videos on sock knitting. But I would like to clarify with you on the needle size. For the circular needle, you mentioned that you’re using size 1.5 (2.5mm) , but the pattern is 2.25mm needle? Which one should I use if I’m using Scheepjes Metropolis yarn?
Hi Mindy! Thank you for your question. It depends on your gauge really. I started out knitting socks on 2.5mm needles, but now I use 2.25mm needles to get a tighter knit fabric which improves the sturdiness of socks. You could also use 2.25mm for the toes/heels, and 2.5mm for the leg. If you're a beginner, I recommend starting with 2.5mm needles.
Hello, First, thanks for this nice video Second, I always have problems with socks, it’s always vary tight no matter what technique I used (toe- up, leg-toe) etc. If you can please help me with this Have a good day
Hello, thank you for your message :) is the fabric itself nice, or is it a bit stiff? If you want the fabric to be looser, you can go up a needle size. If the fabric is nice as it is, but the size of the sock is simply too small, I recommend adding more sts. For example 64, 68, or 72 sts.
Hi! Good question, but not so easy to answer! I prefer circular needles (with the cable in between) because my stitches slide off the double pointed needles. But I also know a lot of people like double pointed needles, so it's a matter of personal preference. For beginners I always recommend trying circular needles first because I feel they offer more stability to your stitches.
I love the clarity of your videos on knitting socks. This is my second try at knitting period. The first was a pair of socks with regular knitting needles which gave me a seam and not a well defined sock pattern. This is my second attempt. I have tried to knit with the suggested finger yarn.....it is way too fine for my skill level. I am now using a baby yarn which has made the knitting process a little better for me to manage. I am however, skeptical at how well this sock will wear, any thoughts?
Hi Teresa, thank you for your comment! I can understand that the fingering yarn is too fine to work with, I sometimes find it fiddly too! If you're going for a thicker yarn, it is best to look for a wool and nylon blend. Wool and polyester blend might also work. Baby yarns are usually not very strong, but they will be great for bed socks. Using baby yarn might make the socks a bit slippery to walk on, so keep that in mind too. Hope this helps!

Hi! It does make a small difference, most patterns are written for circular needles, and in that case you divide all stitches in 2 (for example 30 sts on each needle if you have 60 sts in total). For double pointed needles, your stitches are divided over 3 or 4 needles, so that is a different amount of stitches per needle. It just changes how you need to read your pattern :) otherwise, its just a matter of preference!
Hi this is very clear! You explain it so well but i have a question about this sock. What is the part of the sock you are starting on un part 1? because when i go the part 3 the toe is already made but if I start on the heel how can you go back and do the toe?
Hello Nathalie, thank you for your comment! Part 1 is for casting on the toe stitches, you will increase and knit the toe first, then the foot, and then the heel. Good luck!
Hello Margaret, Thank you for your question! I tend to use either 2.25mm or 2.5mm for my socks. It depends on your gauge which one you will use. For this particular video I think all of my 2.25mm circular needles were already in use, so I used a 2.5mm circular needle.

Thank you! Hmm I haven't heard anything like that regarding the sound, are you sure your headphones are plugged all the way in? I'm just using the microphone that's on my camera. Sorry for the inconvenience in any case! Hope it doesn't occur in my other videos :)
Oh no! I accidentally knit one stitch from both socks together (Siamese style) and can’t figure out how to separate them? It’s a learning experience. My wool gets tangled too.
Hi :) If using a contrast colour for the toes, heels and cuffs, most sock sizes can be knit out of 1 50g ball for the main colour, and 1 50g ball for the contrast colour. If you're knitting the sock out of 1 colour, you would need 2 50g balls, yes.

Lol
Pokémon music lol
