For me lightning is not the problem but the thunder made me deaf for like an hour and this was trolling in Guam in thunder showers with 12 foot swells and heavy rain!

you put on your rubber boots put on some rubber gloves so if you catch a fish and you have to touch something metal you will not get electrocuted there's definitely a way around all of that I worked on boats for 20 some years I've been through some pretty rough weather

Electricity will go through anything if the voltage is high enough. It passes through car tires when cars are hit.

Even if the boat was struck they would have been safe because of the way electricity moves, a good example would be a faraday cage. The electricity would go for the shortest distance to the water from the top of the boat, and if the guys stay inside the boat, they will be safe. They will be safe because the electricity will not want to go up one of their legs and down the other, that's just nonsensical.
What about Lightning Bolt ? Lightning Bolt is not just an electricity.. it carries heat and plasma.. nothing can protect you from it..
The biggest thing is if it strikes the engines or starts a fire. Alot of fuel on board. Being 100+ miles as the crow flies from shore in a lightning storm is never an easy going time.
