Operation Bolo was a cunning plan to deal with the MiG 21 attacks during Operation Rolling Thunder in Vietnam. The MiG 21s were successfully performing high speed attacks against the heavy US Thunderchiefs and a plan was hatched for agile F-4 Phantom IIs to pretend to be lumbering Republic F-105 Thunderchiefs to bait the Vietnamese air force into striking…
One of the skilled pilots behind the plan was WW2 ace Robin Olds who was convinced that his pilots could take on the MiG-21 and prevail if the MiGs could be drawn into the air on even terms.

Fun fact: Captain Olds was the only pilot to shoot down an aircraft while gliding during ww2, is was because he dropped his extra tanks before switching to his internal fuel tanks, so he was gliding behind a 109, so he shot it down
Yup. He managed to take down a Bf 109 while his P-38 Lightning was about to fall when he dropped his external fuel tanks and forgot to switch to the main fuel tanks; and managed to recover his aircraft from a dive when he tried to rescue a P-51 Mustang from the 109s.

As much as I enjoy this channel, my grandpa was a mig 21 pilot and he told me he still have nightmare of his comrade being blown out of the sky by F4. The horror is real and he lives through that everyday.

Yeah, must be terrifying when you're only capable of shooting down ground attack, cargo, and recon aircraft than an argued better fighter with an arguably better pilot comes into the mix to make you his b****.
In December 1966 the MiG-21 pilots of the 921st FR downed 14 F-105 Thunderchiefs without any losses.
The USAF and the US Navy had high expectations of the F-4 Phantom, assuming that the massive firepower, the best available on-board radar, the highest speed and acceleration properties, coupled with new tactics, would provide Phantoms with an advantage over the MiGs. But in confrontations with the lighter MiG-21, F-4s began to suffer losses. From May to December 1966, the USAF lost 47 aircraft, destroying only 12 VPAF fighters in return. From April 1965 to November 1968, over 268 air battles occurred over the skies of North Vietnam. North Vietnam claimed 244 downed U.S. aircraft while admitting to the loss of 85 MiGs. Of these, 46 air battles conducted between F-4s and MiG-21s - the losses were 27 F-4 Phantoms and 20 MiG-21s.

I remember the old _Dogfights_ action/recreation documentary series that covered this same battle along with an actual interview with Olds. It's a shame we'll never get another such interview with such a man, but honestly it's really heartening to see channels like this updating and educating a new generation on battles such as this with new, engaging episodes like this. Keep on making history come alive!

The winner mostly are MiGs, US lose about 1500 fighters compare to 154 of VPAF.

MiG-21s made almost 80% of their kills on the recon and heavy bombing planes.

i just thought it was interesting to point that out to show how deadly SAM sites could be with careful planning that the soviets did for the vietnamese in placing them.

the performance of the Vietnamese AA crews of course eclipses the incapable arabs which had doubted their soviet teachers many times and acted mostly out of order launching at max distance, while in Vietnam; the crews waited sometimes for the plane to fly over them so they could launch at their belly/tail and take them out without them even knowing a missile was coming(RWR--radar warning reciever has a blind spot below so the lock would go completely undetected)

Yes. I remember one episode of Dogfights where Lt. Col Robin Olds tell his dogfight experiences. He was an Ace during WW2 - flying a P-38 Lightning (Scat III) and P-51 Mustang (Scat VII), and in the Vietnam War in his F-4 Phantom II.

I remember Dogfights, they even showed stories from naval battles :3

I grew up in Tucson, Arizona (Davis Monthan AFB) back in the late 60's... I remember a F4 Phantom Jet crashed into a AJ Bayless Grocery Store killing many people..shortly after this incident the flight landing pattern was changed...

I love how some phantoms are missing either a flap or an aileron from air combat overloads. Yarnhub killing it.

Operation Bolo, with Robin Olds. Both legends of themselves. It's a shame Olds was not allowed to stay in Vietnam in the early 70's. He would've taught the Air Force pilots great skills of dogfighting.

Yarn, the afterburner is the fire effect thing on the engine. When it is not engaged the engine is still at 100 percent throttle but just no afterburner effect and the extra speed it gives. Overall like absolute tasty animations
