That's the problem with guys who work on their own vehicles. They can't stop. Once there's nothing more to add it's, "Ohp, better sell it and get a new one."
I’m currently building a 79 squarebody GMC shortbed reg cab. Should be good, but I think the general consensus is that they are too big for some trails. All depends where you are though.
Tundras don't fit to well on JEEP trails, I guess. I get what you're saying, though. These overloaded Jeeps and Tacomas need v8s. Funny thing to me is, all of these guys spend all of this do, re, mi turning their gas mileage to shit and I have yet to hear any mention of LONG RANGE FUEL TANKS. If I were going to build an OVERLANDER (and I am) that would be one of my first, if not THE first, mod that I made.
Wayne Cummings forgive me if this a stupid question as I come from the Lexus world. But what about throwing a supercharger on it? Would that compensate for the lack of v8 power?
@@musicguitar What I have learned since this post is that changing the gear ratio is probably the most important thing to do if one is going to put bigger tires on their vehicle and add the weight of overlanding equipment. That will help the mileage and the performance. The way I understand it, most of these folks have found out that changing their gears is what they should have done first. The engines are powerful enough provided they do this. This is what makes me appreciate them. They make all of the mistakes. They acknowledge it and they talk about it. They are providing a great service to everyone getting involved in this very interesting pass time. First things for me to do: Pick a vehicle, change gears, mild 2 to 3 inch suspension lift, nothing taller than a 33" tire, long range fuel tank, recovery kit, a tool kit, fridge, fresh water storage, tent, cook set up and go figure the rest out as I go. I'm looking forward to it. Cheers

Id say the advantage is the separate storage but also that can be a down fall. One disadvantage for me in the 4runner, especially with all the off-road I do is the noise. Inevitably when you pack all your stuff up in the same compartment you will ride there will be noise and as time goes on and parts loosen there will be rattles, this seems to be enhanced with every SUV I've had verse all the trucks I've had not so much as by design they allow for more flex
