- Remington Model 1875 Single Action
Also known as the “Improved Model Army Revolver” & the “Frontier Army”.
The 1875 Remington Improved Model Army was Remington's first cartridge handgun designated to compete with Colt’s 1873 Revolver. Although they did not manage to get a military contract, the New Model or Improved Army did gain a lot of popularity with the public. They were a rugged handgun and even though a bit heavier than the Colt, held up well under hard use.
Over the 15 year production run approximately 30,000 guns were produced. They offered a blued or nickeled finish with numerous grip options. Walnut, Ivory and Mother of Pearl. As with most revolvers of the time, a 7.5 inch barrel was standard. But a small amount of 5.5 inch barreled models were produced.
Remington offered this model in 3 calibers:
44WCF (44-40),
44 Remington,
45 Colt.

Freeze really comes up with some uncommon guns.
-Marky
And nice examples of them also. Thanks for the video. 😎
Glad you enjoyed it, Gary. I will pass on your sentiments to Freeze.

Wow !!! What a truly amazing video on the original Remington 1875! My Dad got me into shooting single action revolver when I was a little boy. He then bought a Remington 1858 percussion when I was 19 . Man then we were hooked on Remington revolvers! We were at a gun show and discovered the 1875 and liked it better than colt . He never got to get one. I lost him 6yrs ago. So I am about to buy Cimarron 1875 Remington in 45 Colt in his honor & possibly a 1858 Remington factory conversion stainless steel in 45 Colt. I just love them they fit my hand very well. Have a great day !
Glad you liked the video. These were pretty rare items to get out hands on.

Wow nickel Remington is absolutely beautiful
They are neat guns. Yes.

Very nice pieces. I love my Uberti 1858 new model army revolver that I bought 4 months ago in August. Mine is blued steel with an 8 inch barrel. I got me a Howell .45 colt cartridge conversion cylinder for it in August too as well as a couple of boxes of HSM .45 colt 200 grain cowboy loads for it. I’ve taken her out shooting a few times during this past fall season and put about a 50 round box of ammo worth of ammo through her. I posted a video on my channel that I made of my most recent shooting session where I fired 20 shots at a cantaloupe from about 45 feet away
I'll make that call yes Remington is the best usable revolver. I use the all on the ranch. Remington is my favorite
I really don’t have enough experience with the type to have an opinion. So I defer to you.
Glad you liked the video.

Marky
from an aesthetic point of view I like R1875 more over other single action revolvers of the era. Great video, thanks for sharing.
Glad you liked it.

The gun was used in the U.S. military, the Apache army scouts during the Southwest Indian wars were issued them in nickel plating because the government believed they wouldn’t take care of their firearms as well so The nickel was supposed to prevent corrosion. There are pictures of scouts packing them.
Interesting facts. Thanks, WS.

you have wo awesome piece of history... nice....
Somebody does. This was consulting work we did with an estate.

@@John1911 you are lucky, i have two Rem 75 also but mine are made by Uberty...lol
@@jfbft5007 All the better to actually shoot. Some of these super rare guns, we don’t even want to risk firing them. Uberti clones are very practical and even preferred to my thinking. Glad you liked the video.

Good video.
Great video would be one with these at the range.
Again, thanks for sharing.
These are coming out of a private family collection so Freeze is just ID’ing and evaluating them for the family.
Marky
Great video! The Remington sure fits my hand better than a Colt!
Glad you liked it.

I hope Remington starts making this gun again.
Pretty much zero chance of that. Best case is an Italian company that re-pops all those other cowboy guns, turns to these one day. -Marky
Frank James was a smart man... these are sweet as hell. I would carry a brace of .45 reproductions around the property, but my property has Grizzly and moose, these just don’t have the mandatory knockdown power when Mr Brown gets grumpy. Too bad, love the look and feel....
Mr. Brown will put you down! I don’t blame you one bit!

Marky
I just bought a Cimarron Outlaw .357 mag, 7.5 inch barrel. The grip is small in my hand so I am going to get some extended grips from Texas Grip.
Good purchase!
Marky
Only seen replicas before, thanks.
Thank you for taking the time to watch. I will pass your sentiments along to Freeze.

This looks like a sweet revolver. Do you recommend getting one? I want to get a single action with classic looks and some history behind it.
Getting a single action revolver? Yes. Everyone should know how to run one. But I would highly suggest a modern reproduction or maybe something from Ruger.
The modern stuff, from the right company, can be well made. Offered in modern centerfire, smokeless calibers and are essentially stronger due to better metallurgy.
Colt single action army’s. Italian copies of same. Or some of the Ruger Vaqueros.
Glad you liked the video.
Regards,
Marky
I believe it was his 1875 Remington that Frank James surrendered to the governor of Missouri when he "retired".
I’m not sure. I’ll have to ask Freeze about that. I will also pass along that you liked his video.

Marky
Is the nickel with ivory in 44-40 as well?
Freeze responds:
“Yes. The nickle with ivory gripsvis in 44W commonly referred to as 44-40”.
-Freeze
Is the Remington model more powerful than the colt 45?
I am taking a wild guess since this isn't my area. I would think not. Back then I think they would be similar practically speaking. However…modern 45 Colt can be loaded with modern powders that would literally blow Remington to pieces. I think. Maybe someone with more cowboy knowledge can give you a definitive answer. I am merely guessing and could be 100 percent ass-backwards. -Marky
At least the 44.40 ammo is more expensive
But if you catch a bullet it may make not much diff
They are identical in performance.
Most of the Remingtons were chambred in 44-40, as were most of the Colts.
Both had 7.5 inch barrels as the standardn both came in a variety if calibres, barrel lengths, etc.
@@Beuwen_The_Dragon Not true. Most Colt Peacemaker were 45 Colt. About 2/3 of all Peacemakers sold in the old west were 45, the rest different calibers. 44-40 came in second.
Beautiful guns. Is the ivory handled in 44-40 as well? And just a correction, the Remington 1875 did see some action in the US Cavalry during the Indian wars. As noted before, the Indian Scouts and Police also carried these.
